Metal heads and Metallica fans absolutely love all the hard and heavy songs by them and thought that this song was, to quote Beavis and Butthead "wussy music." As a young Metallica fan who was getting into their music at the time, I actually loved the song because it was just deep, emotional, and very real. It gave a glimpse into what this band was really thinking and feeling at the time the song was written. It's still one of my favorite Metallica songs to this day, and it always will be. 🤘

“Nothing Else Matters” by the San Francisco-based heavy metal band Metallica, was a global smash in the summer of 1992, reaching the top 40 in 15 countries. It was a #1 hit in both Denmark and Poland, and a top 10 hit in Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, England, and America. And the man who penned the words and music - Metallica’s lead singer and guitarist James Hetfield - never intended for anyone to hear it but himself. It started with a phone conversation. He explains, “We were on the road in 1990. After a show one night, I was missing my girlfriend something awful, so I called her up from the hotel room. Suddenly it was like she was standing right next to me. Cradling the receiver between my left ear and shoulder, I picked up a pen and wrote down on the hotel stationary, ‘So close, no matter how far.’ She lived 200 miles away, but it was as if she were in the same room. It began as nothing more than a dedication to her. But more words started flowing forth as I started thinking about our fans everywhere and how nothing else mattered to us but putting on the greatest show we could each night. Some of them are hard workers who don’t make a lot of money and they can save up for weeks or even months to come see us play - so it’s a disservice to do anything but our absolute best. By the time we said our goodbyes, I had the idea for the rest of the song in my head. I wrote them down later because I wanted to concentrate on talking to her first and foremost. James continued, “About this time, I had been taking classical guitar lessons, so I started doing some picking in the room and came up with an intro that night. However, if you love doing something, sometimes you just do it for yourself because it makes you feel happy inside. At the time, I had no ideas of ever playing it for anyone but myself. However, I was in the studio a short time later warming up before everyone else showed up, and I instinctively began playing the opening notes as a finger exercise - to limber them up a bit. When Lars Ulrich walked in. He said “James, what is that? It’s amazing!!.’ So, I kind of had to let the cat out of the bag. Lars asked me if I had words and I showed him. He said ‘we must record this’ - and brought the other guys in and they all agreed right then and there to do it. In an interview with Songfacts, Hetfield said, “So, it started out as kind of a dedication to my girlfriend, and then to our fans. But as I kept writing words, I realized it was becoming a song about living for a higher power. What we do daily and why we do it. What or who keeps us going. For some people nothing else matters but their mates or their kids or careers. For other it’s service to their country. Regardless, it’s anything or anyone beyond self. After we recorded it and started playing it live, so many fans came up to us or wrote to us explaining how it connected with them in so many ways we could have never imagined. One person told us nothing else mattered but to get beyond his addiction to painkillers and how listening to the song kept inspiring him to keep battling it despite setbacks. James finished with this, “After a concert in New York, I was invited to visit a Hells Angel’s clubhouse. They showed me a video they'd put together of one of the fallen brothers and his life, and it was all set to 'Nothing Else Matters’ playing in the background. Wow. This means a lot more than me missing my girlfriend right? This is brotherhood. The army could use this song. Anybody who lives for something or someone other than themselves can use it in whatever fashion they decide.” Unfortunately, some fans thought “Nothing Else Matters” was a sell-out ballad just to get a hit as other groups such as Kiss have been accused of doing with “Beth”, but Hetfield’s story about the song’s inspiration tells us this is not true. Regardless, it has sold over 5 million copies worldwide since its release on 30 April 1992. it has also become a staple in the concert set list for Metallica, with it always being dedicated to the fans before the group starts playing it. They often finish it with a slow fade before launching into their heavier rocker “Enter Sandman.” Sources: Wikipedia, Songfacts, Billboard, AZ Lyrics, All Music, Wayback Machine, Music and Media, Hit Parade.

Lots of comments refer to James (Hetfield), and the absolute fear he had of sharing this with his mates. METALLICA doesn't do songs about 'sentimentality'... but this song above ALL THEIR GENIUS will probably outlast the rest of their brilliant catalog. They are THE Metal band and this track allowed them to compose a wider variety of themes with confidence that their fans will find value in their perspective.
