Hi there Mon from Downunder, id like to give some context about DPR IAN....born Christian Yu, in Sydney Australia, he is an Australian singer, rapper, and director based in Los Angeles. He is a former member of Yedang Entertainment boy group C-Clown, which was active between 2012 and 2015. Yu made his solo debut under his co-founded label Dream Perfect Regime (DPR) with the digital single "So Beautiful" .Yu is behind the visual arts for the DPR, In 2021, DPR Ian and Live released the track "Diamonds + and Pearls" as part of the soundtrack to the Marvel Film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. This marked the duo-along with fellow artists on the album-becoming two of the first Korean artists to participate in a Marvel soundtrack album. DPR Ian was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when he was a teenager, then later in his twenties with dissociative identity disorder (DID). He later created an alter ego, Mito, to reflect the low episodes of his mental disorder. In an interview with Billboard, he said that "I wanted to portray a character dealing with various mental disorders which may be deemed negative or dark in a realistic sense but at the same time can also be seen as superpowers in a different light". He talks about a personified version of his high manic episodes named 'Mr. Insanity' with his newest album, Dear Insanity, saying, "I thought it had to be about someone that represents my utmost manic highs, but all in all I've always thought Mr. Insanity to be more of a scary character. You're not sure what he's capable of. ....I hope this sheds some light on why is clips are so delightfully insane....

I'm going to talk about his career and the story behind this MV since you're interested but for that I'll need to write a book 😂 Ian is being vulnerable sharing parts of himself that he really didn't need to and giving a voice to people with mental health disorders (like myself) so I want recognize this by sharing his story. I'll try to talk a little bit less next time though 😂: About his career: He's korean-australian and as a teen he was part of heavy metal band while he was in Australia (it remains one of his favourite genres). He moved to Korea alone after just 1 year of university to pursue bboying. Suddenly was streetcasted and entered the Kpop group C-Clown as the main rapper/main dancer/leader back in 2012 (yes, wild ride...). They sadly didn't get much success and disbanded after just 3 years. After that he decided to work as a video director and shot videos for a lot of other korean artists. He then co-founded the record label DPR (Dream Perfect Regime) where he works as the chief editor and visual director, and they launched their first artist called DPR Live, Ian's close friend. For many years he was behind the cameras and had a lot of success as a director. It was only 2020 that he decided to start his solo career in which he produces and writes the songs plus directs and edits the videos himself. He also plays the drums, keyboard and bass. Basis of the storyline: At first he started because he wanted to tell his story and to help himself release and manage what he goes through. He struggles with bipolar disorder type I and DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) and he decided to tell a storyline with three other "characters" besides himself: Mito, Mr Insanity and The Hybrid. But those aren't just characters, Mito and Mr Insanity are real people that have a mind of their own called "alters" (short for the medical term 'altered state of consciousness') and that he coexists with. In DID there's more than one person living in the same body with different memories, voice tone, body language, beliefs, motives, etc. DID stems from severe and/or repeated early childhood trauma (before 5 to 9 years old) that prevents the mind of the child from fully integrating into one singular identity. The mind grows as different alters (different people/identities) that develop separately and each one has a different role. One of these alters can be the 'protector alter' or there can be more than one. The protector alter is there to be the person who takes all of the trauma for the child and remembers them just so the others will forget (dissociative amnesia) That person was Mito. A child struck by trauma is like a broken mirror and each fragment, each alter, becomes its own mirror and functions separately but all pieces together complete the whole mirror, their whole 'system'. (how someone with DID may refer to themselves). The physical version of his first EP had a broken mirror inside the case. Someone with DID then only knows this mechanism to cope with trauma: to disassociate and become someone else. So they unconsciously switch between identities as they are exposed to stress and also more identities can be formed throughout their lives. Ian is the prominent identity, the one who stays the longest in control (called the "host"). In very stressful situations Ian blacks out and Mito takes control of the mind in order to protect him (he's the one "fronting" ps. there's also cofronting meaning more than one alter in control at the same time.) Ian then will come back hours, days, weeks later (the longest that it has been was a month) not remembering anything that was said or done. Basically his life has been lived and he doesn't know how. Mr Insanity is when he's manic due to his bipolar disorder. Mania is when the person reaches a state of high euphoria and/or irritability. The person is in full speed, the ideas just flow, can't sleep, makes irresponsible decisions and can turn into psychosis, when they start to have delusions (believes something that can't be true) and hallucinations (sees or hear something that doesn't exist). He also refers to Insanity as another alter and says that he blacked out into Insanity only a few times. But it's complicated since he has two diagnosis so they can interact in a different way compared to a person with just one or the other. About Saint MV: The story is set inside a world called "The Other Side" which represents his consciousness. It's a journey in which Ian goes into his own mind, where these alters exist. The only way to get into this world is through lucid dreaming (since childhood he lucid dreams 5-6 days a week, when you know that you are dreaming and can manipulate the dream to your desire). Several people with DID have 'inner/internal worlds' where alters can interact. Inside this world there's a place called "the void". Everytime that he would switch into any alter it would create an excess or a so-called damage in his mind. The remnants of that go to a certain compartment inside his consciousness. Everytime you forget an idea, a core memory or a bad memory (trauma). Everytime time you have all these experiences that you blocked out or other experiences that you’re inspired by, all jumbled and forgotten, all of this trickles down to this confined space that we don't even know exists permanently in the mind. The void has been there for as a long as we can remember and it was so successfully locked it away as a kid or an early teen that you dared not to look ever since because you're scared of how big it might have gotten (representing the fact that he doesn't know what trauma is the origin of his DID since It's locked away and only Mito is aware of it). Over the years, these memories have dwelled so long that it creates it's own entity, not an alter but an abomination and the last character: The Hybrid. He describes The Hybrid as an uninvited God, an ancient God that is almost like a ruler of The Other Side but not the originator. The Hybrid is the gateway for Ian getting into The Other Side and turning into Insanity. Ian comes across The Hybrid because it almost misleads him to itself since it uses him as a puppet because it wants to create a messanger. By that The Hybrid wants a successor because through them it gains powers, a vessel and a rite of passage just so that it can scape the void into the rest of The Other Side. By doing that it could obtain complete control of this world. Mito is the guardian, the gatekeeper of The Other Side (protector alter of his consciousness). There are certain relations and ties with Mito and The Hybrid in the past before Ian. That's why Mito is well informed, alert and cautious about what The Hybrid is doing because Mito was the first successor of The Hybrid. The Hybrid was the one who banned Mito and turned him into a fallen angel (this is how Mito is usually represented hence the dark wings), reason why Mito resents it. He has said that who possibly trapped The Hybrid inside 'the void' was Mito himself. The Hybrid is lying to Ian supposing certain things and promises and that's why Ian goes down this path blindly hence turning into Insanity later. Intro monologue: "You've been lied to. And yet you're a fool for believing it. What promises did it make you? A world, power or perhaps a way out." The narrator is Mito talking to Ian with 'It" being The Hybrid. Mito is always represented with a deep voice because when Ian switches to Mito his voice usually gets much deeper and he can hit an octave that Ian can't (alters in DID can have different voice tones). How does The Hybrid pretend to use Ian? The only way to get into the void is via a special key. The Hybrid is made of the 8 phases of the moon. In this world the 8 phases of the moon are separate moons. For each one of these 8 moons there is a door that reside on 'the void', where The Hybrid is trapped. Each dimension behind each door sets up a mission/task. One of them is what we see in Saint. The sword was a powerful tool wielded by past ancient Gods. It doesnt necessarily belongs to anyone but it rather it's a God-killer which is why the Hybrid sends Ian to destroy it or rather to steal it. (Continues)

The analog clock he holds once he comes out of the castle signals how much time Ian is given per phase. One full rotation of the clock means one full moon. Once it closes completely The Hybrid joins all of the moons and turns them into an eclipse (the one shown in the video) which signals the coming of Insanity. It's almost like Ian is trying to stay alive within these 24 hours. At the end of the song 'Welcome To The Other Side" from his 2nd EP the lyrics are "2 minutes after midnight" meaning it's about to hit full rotation. Midnight is also usually associated with a full moon which by itself reminds us of wolves. He has incorporated lyrics where he mentions wolves and howls several times. Wolves are a huge symbolism for him because of the werewolf transformation aspect that ties on with his DID switches. Ian/future Insanity goes to take the sword/steal it through a trial and goes to destroy it. But by touching the sword he gets a glimpse of its previous owner which is Mito (the character with the dark wings). At the end Mito is holding the sword down and crouching. He has also said that the gloves are an importante detail since only through these gloves you can wield the sword. The true version of Insanity (which is his manic state) is intense, unexpectedly dangerous and risky. In this case Insanity becomes a God, not in the image of the actual God itself but almost a separate one. Insanity is the one shown in a glimpse at the beginning as a face full of glitter and at the end with the red cape on the launchpad. Where Insanity gets all of the sparkles and glitters will be revealed later. His 2nd EP 'Dear Insanity...' and its MVs narrate the continuation, the birth of Insanity. Until now he's telling the story in reverse. Summary: Mito gets used by The Hybrid in the past and gets banned (turns into a fallen angel) >>> Mito locks The Hybrid on the void and becomes the gatekeeper of The Other Side >> Ian is used by The Hybrid >>> Enters The Other Side >>> Completes the 8 tasks, one of them being stealing the sword and frees The Hybrid >>>> Ian turns into Insanity He likes to differentiate the chracters by color: Mito - red, black and white Insanity - violet, green and gold The Hybrid - red, green and blue (the primary colors - RGB) Mito's red and Insanity's green are the influence of the Hybrid. The character with the blue eyes (here and at Limbo) is Ian going down the route of turning into Insanity. The blue represents the influence of the Hybrid signaling that it has taken over. At the song "No Blueberries' which was released 4 years old on his solo artist debut year (before the Hybrid timeline was even introduced to the public) and that is set in the future storywise, the lyrics say "Tell me what is in your eyes, baby. Red, green or blue", meaning essentially "Who are you? Are you Insanity, Mito or the Hybrid?. About musical genres: Mito - Orchestra, R&B, jazz (most of his 1st EP and 1st album) Mr Insanity - pop, indie pop, EDM (most of the 2nd EP) Ian - indie rock, metal (he said he's going to release an Ian album soon) Though his songs are usually a mix of genres in good way because often an alter will start a song and another will finish it. And Ian is working on an art book with the story and a movie (Mito 3) in the upcoming years! The Hybrid album is also coming! A person below already posted all of the MVs but I really recommend Skins Demo. It's a relatively short video that was made entirely by Mito while Ian had a 2 day black out. Ian came back found the video and decided to release as it was. The 'you' in the lyrics is Ian. It's a letter from Mito to Ian. It contains Mito's feelings about holding their traumas for so long. It was an spontaneous release and not part of any storyline so the order doesn't matter. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk!
