Metal Slug: Super Devil Run

It JUST occured to me that I hadn't done a MS1 Super Devil Run.
For as wonky as the game feels to play in comparison to its successors, I always look at MS1 as the pinnacle in the series as far as far as aesthetics, presentation and mechanics go. I think it's the one with the most attention to detail put into it, as crazy a statement as that is to make about any game in comparison to MS3. It has the most death animations, the most intricate of details mechanically (like how you could destroy a Di-Cokka with a grenade and not have a soldier pop out, or tap the jump button for one frame to do a short hop for quick entry into a Slug). MS1 also has the best Super Devil mode in my opinion, with a hand cannon that has insane range, unlimited rounds onscreen, and has the Metal Slug cannon firing sound effect rather than the pistol one in MS2.
It's crazy to think this game is 22 years old as I type this, but I still wish for a new Metal Slug game that ran at 60FPS, with all the artistic and mechanical flair of MS1, but with the features and controls as precise and predictible as MS3.

I do think I see what you mean by MS1's distinct flair though It's the little things that stand out like the glow when you fire a gun within the submarine remains in the first mission or that toilet guy in mission 3

Ohh man, reading your description just make me want even more a new MetalSlug game just like you said... What do you think about the mechanics on MS6? I mean every character has a different property and the possibilitie to have 2 weapons? =)

I like the innovation, but I don't like the end result, oddly enough. The KOF characters feel very out of place, and the characters aren't balanced out in my opinion, with Clark and Tarma being damn near useless and Eri and Ralf being OP. Every speed run is always Eri, Fio or Ralf, and Marco is just his own Easy mode. The weapon stock system does add a lot of versatility, but I think it forces the player to strategise and think too much in an arcade game. Again, for example, in MS1 if you died and respawned with a pistol you'd always have weapons to pick up, and even multiple Slug vehicles if yours got destroyed, to encourage you to keep playing (and insert more coins!). In contrast, if you died in the final mission of MS6 with the Shotgun you're in for a world of pain because you NEED it for the possessed character fight. In short, I feel the level design of games with the weapon stock system is too punishing and too mentally taxing, and completely out of place in an arcade game. It makes Metal Slug feel and play more like a Megaman game, if it makes sense. All that being said though, I very seriously doubt SNKP is going to make another main series Metal Slug game... as much as it saddens me to say. It's been more than ten years since the latest travesty that is MS7, a game so horrible I don't even want to do a one life run of it. And I even did MS4! I don't think the new developers know what makes a good Metal Slug game, and instead design levels that feel more challenging and spiteful rather than fun. MSXX is still running off the severely dated, freaking 30FPS 4:3 MS3 engine, whereas MS1-3 each had their own distinct engine. Because MS7 and XX were such a travesty that didn't sell well, I don't know if SNKP will be too keen on making a MS8. So... uh... I guess we have MS Attack... *sigh*

knightmare is right. You'll lose your cannon pistol for the rest of the run since power guns have infinite ammo in Combat School, and weapons carry over missions.
