They don’t lip sync. There is often a backing track, however. They work out a lot and run on treadmills while singing. Remember too, there are 7 members so they take turns singing a part, which allows a bit of a breather. They sound fantastic in live performances!

@@JohnReavesLive If there was a clip it's long gone. But they rather sing live, get out of breath and breathe in the mic rather than not sing live which we've heard tons of times. They like giving their whole selves into their performances and if they get tired, that's what happens. They've even tell us when they are tired and out of breathe. The staff RM has is the thyrsus, the staff of Dionysus. During a BTS concert you will hear some different mixes to songs like that Not Today mix. Yes, Suga hates headsets and only wears them if he REALLY has to.

There are many behind-the-scenes videos showing how upset they get, often crying, when their voice cracks, they miss a step, or just “mess up.” They are perfectionists. Yes, they sing live, but sometimes that comes at a cost. That’s why Army respects them so much.

The staff that RM was holding in the beginning in Dionysus is called a "thyrsus." It's what Dionysus' followers carried during their drunken celebrations. Dionysus was the opening song for their 2019 Love Yourself Speak Yourself tour (I was there opening night at the Rose Bowl!) and this was the set for that opening song. They also performed it on several Korean music shows with this same set. They always have back-up dancers on their tours. In the past they always used the same Korean back-up dancers but I've noticed that in recent years they've begun hiring western back-up dancers when they're performing in western countries. The last 4 concerts in Las Vegas they featured the dance group that they had in their ON Kinetic Manifesto Film, The Lab. Edit: there is no music video for Dionysus. Also, the Wembley concert was in the evening but because London is so far north and it was summer, it didn't get dark until later in the concert. When I saw this concert in LA, the sun was already setting during this set. LOL, I was wondering why you put that Suga meme in the corner!

@@JohnReavesLive I studied Ancient Greek literature in college so I was SO THRILLED when Dionysus came out. It’s all thanks to RM’s intellect and love of literature. The 2019 MMA performance has SO MANY Greek mythology references. It really is epic. Can’t wait for you to react to it…after you get to know some of their other songs 😅

They state multiple times they hate lipsinging, they hate when some shows sometimes force the entire track as backtracking even if they are singing live and is pretty notorious... We know their talent and how they push themselves to the limits. We have a lot of behind the scenes footage of them passing out right after each part of the concert, under stage and staff members giving oxygen to them.. that's proof of them jumping like crazy while singing to the point of fainting.. bc that's for what they live, for the concerts, thatxs their passion. So I don't mind a little backtracking in specific points of the songs if that means they push themselves a little less...

Some of the shows also don't have the ability to have instruments , and they haven't changed that, so the few groups that play instruments have to fake playing their instruments and have a backtrack. Then when mamamoo is forced to have the full backtrack they full on forget to lip sync their parts. back to bts related RM in awful at lip-syncing as well, if you watch the not today video you'll notice that he covers his mouth so you can't see it. You can really notice RM being bad at lip-syncing in mic drop

It's pretty funny because we (Army) joke all the time about how the one thing they're actually bad at is lip syncing 🤣Most of their have some hilariously off syncing, but we love it anyway

BTS sounds even better live than the studio version a lot of the time. I've seen a lot of bands of different genres live, from motley crue to echo & the bunnymen to Robert plant and more, & I have to say in my 49 years of life BTS are by far the greatest performers I've ever seen. Their concert in LA Dec 1 2021 slapped. And they're great because in addition to the singing and dancing and rapping all at the same time, they talk to us ARMYs in the audience. It's an interactive concert. They each say words to us in the beginning and in the end, with little jokes etc throughout. They wanted us to do a wave with our ARMY bombs (Bluetooth lightsticks you always see) and we fkd it up so bad, they laughed at us and said how smart we are lol. They get emotional, they goof off, make up their own freestyle dances sometimes. It's a total experience and I wish every army could see them at least once. It was on my bucket list and I'm so grateful I got to see them. 💜 Eta the band is usually in the back recessed part of the stage. They're hard to see but you can catch them sometimes. Also, there are some "band cams" on KZbin where you can watch the band play. I can't remember the song but I just saw a drum cam of ghost playing one of their songs at a concert. So you can see the crowd from the stage which is also cool.

Suga did part-time bicycle delivery work while he was in training. A car put him in danger and he injured his left shoulder. He lived with it until last year, when he had it repaired surgically and went through months of rehab. I've noticed now he dances more freely and powerfully, with no limitations on upper body moves. His energy and his lower body moves have always been strong. You're seeing that here. Since he did not tell Big Hit the real story behind the shoulder injury at first, that narrative about not wanting to dance may not reflect how he truly felt. He's on record in semi candid footage asking Jimin for choreo. (And Jimin's on record asking Suga for a song.)

@@JohnReavesLive suga comes from a poor family/background which is why he had to work part time jobs but it was actually prohibited as a trainee, that's why he did in a secret and didn't tell the company in fear of being kicked out, which is also why he hid this shoulder surgery for years since it's related to his secret part time job

yes he actually got hit by a car and got dragged underneath it. So glad the company eventually offered to pay for his college so he could stop his part time jobs especially knowing he's basically been on his own since he was 16 and basically ran away from home. There's a quote from him from their February 28, 2014 appearance on Jo Jungchi and Harim's 2 'O Clock radio broadcast, the members were asked about their parents' goals and expectations for them when they were younger. Suga says his parents wanted him to become a government worker and have a stable job and that and I quote : "As for me, for over 6 months ...[my parents] were very much against me doing music. To make me reconsider [my choice], they hit me a lot and we fought, and things like that...so I made music under those circumstances". The host asks Suga if his parents eventually gave him permission to make music and Suga replies "well...before giving me permission, I was already out and about doing music." Super glad his parents accept him now too 💜

For their shows they have "concert remixes". Usually they add more rock styles to encourage a louder and fuller sound. ARMY "jokingly" complain that the concert remixs aren't released for streaming. I say jokingly because we really want them😭😭

The best Dionysus performance to me is the 2019 MMA. The entire BTS performance is awesome, but the ending is a Dionysus performance with added content. Awesome! Never disappoints.

The energy was definitely different and maybe a bit more gritty/hard than the day show version. That whole show was my fave live I've seen from them so far.

(SORRY FOR THE LONG COMMENT) Regarding live singing: Keep in mind, in Kpop there are 3 types of live singing. First -> Live - completely live, only the instrumental. Usually used for songs without choreography or really light choreo. Second -> Live MR - live, with a backing vocal track. Usually used for songs with neutral to heavy choreography. Can be used for songs with no choreo too, if they're like hype songs where the artist is jumping around. Third -> Live AR - All recorded, basically lipsynching. This live is PRE RECORDED and used during the artists' stages to seem live. (You can tell the difference between Live, Live MR and Live AR) BTS has done all three, as well as all other Kpop groups. HOWEVER, they only ever do the third one in KOREAN PROMOTIONAL SHOWS (You don't know what it is yet, but you'll soon come across it). These shows are music programs, and the music programs of South Korea are broadcast weekly, with different artists performing on the shows to promote their music. Some of them are SBS's Inkigayo and The Show, KBS's Show Champion, Mnet's M Countdown, MBC's Show! Music Core and etc. Some years ago, artists still sang live (Live or Live MR) in those shows, but from like 2015-2017 on is basically the norm to do Live AR. This is not to say the artists *always* do that, usually later on on promotions they switch up to Live Mr, but in the first weeks of promotion, tho, it's really hard to find anyone that doesn't. BTS, from 2017 to 2020 still went to those shows, but they didn't promote during a lot of weeks like before 2017, so they would do like 2-3 weeks only (artists can promote up to like 2 months or more). From 2020 till now they stopped going all together, so you won't find performances of their songs from mid 2020 onwards. Like all the others, they did do Live AR there. These are not limited to those companies' weekly shows, they are expected to do that on every event of those channels, like end-of-the-year specials (the Gayos). *BESIDES* those very specific occasions, BTS only does Live and Live MR. In concerts, it's always Live, or Live MR with really low backing track. Any other lives they do, like award shows or special lives like in talk shows, Tiny Desk, MTV Unplugged etc is always Live MR or Live. I think it's important to remember that they DID do lipsynching, even though the situation demanded it. And to be honest they're really bad at it 😭 when they lipsynch for some of their music videos I don't even look at their mouths cause I know it's just not gonna synch up 💀 they don't really like lipsynching either, have made that known for some time now.

@@JohnReavesLive Yes, those music shows are pretty much a necessity for small groups, it does really help promoting the songs for not well known groups, but the bad side is that the performances are expected to be *perfect* without any mistake, so for the first weeks (the ones most people tune into to watch) the broadcast channels don't really "allow" real live singing, which is a pity. So those performances are basically dance performances with pre recorded vocals lol There are some groups that lipsynch even outside of those programs (which I'll not name), but I've watched basically every performance BTS ever put out at this point and I don't remember ever seeing them lipsynching outside of those shows. Earlier in the 2010s, when those shows still allowed live singing, they'd sing live as well, so there's no doubt as to who wanted them (and everyone else) to lipsynch. Since BTS doesn't need those shows for promotion anymore and really, since 2017 only went there to meet the fans, they stopped going when the pandemic started because they said it wasn't worth it anymore and it was only tiring them. 2:17 the chairs help with the whole greek olympian theme they have for this song's performance. "dionysus" is really cool bc it relates their status as artists to dionysus, god of wine (note: alcohol sounds similar to art in korean), theater, inspiration, etc., who was considered an outcast in olympus so he established a separate group of dedicated followers, just like how bts were considered outcasts in kpop at first. they compare art to wine a lot in the song (in that it brings both pleasure and pain) so when it mentions drinking/partying until dawn it actually also is them talking about constantly working. there's a lot of other cool references and wordplay too!

The concert is in Japan. Dionysus and Not Today are the 2 opening songs in their setlist. Show actually started at 7:30PM but sunset is late in Japan summer, otherwise the lightstick would be turned on already. They played Not Today (rock remix) so you are definitely hearing the guitars not found in the studio version. Lastly, Japan has, no doubt, the best live stage sound engineering in the world. Japan have a very robust live concert music scene and extensive concert infrastructure too. Concert film footages from all of BTS’ Japan shows always have the best sound quality compare to other shows in the world

As someone who's had the absolute pleasure and luck of seeing them live every tour since The Wings Era, I can honestly say EVERY SINGLE BTS CONCERT IS EPIC!! ..hand to God. From their humble beginnings in smaller venues where you had to camp out the night before just to be closer in 'the pit' to awe inspiring massive stadiums. I'm older army (48) so I've experienced many different types of artist/genres and shows but BTS live is jawdropping. Nothing beats it..Every single time, it's something fresh, new and creative. I'm in love with how aggressive their voices sound in the live of not today with the live arrangements, it sounds way better than the studio version. I do like the studio version but it's not really a song of BTS that I listen to often unlike watching live performances. I would probably listen to the studio more if the instrumental had similar elements to the live arrangement one because it fits the song soo much better. I also love that we kinda hear the fact that they are moving in not today, Jungkook is very very stable live, but when he does the footwork thing in not today his voice kinda shakes along with it but for some reason I love it more than when it's clean? Why does shaking voice sound good to me ? I have no idea but I'm here for it

@@geekyreader34 true.. but jungkooks vocal stability often throws people off bc it’s rarely a time where his voice shakes even while moving through the craziest parts… then doing Dionysus and not today directly after only had his voice kinda shaking in the second half… especially bc jk is pitch perfect and his raw no mic vocals can almost have a metallic sound sometimes depending on how he’s singing for what kinda vibe of the song.. he tends to throw people off lol but they’re all definitely great at what they do and so impressive with how good they sound with so much movement !!

About the dance team, they initially had a small group that depended directly of BigHit, which included their dance teachers and choreographers. Now they use a few established dance crews. In South Korea I remember We dem Boyz, but they have several and in American venues they usually go with The Lab

The dancers are either kpop trainees ( bts used to be backup dancers for other groups or artists under bighit when they were trainees as well) or just dancers they have no name as far as I know but when they go to the US the lab dance team performs with bts as backup dancers

If you want to see them after each performance, look for the compilation of their back stage videos where they need to use oxygen for breathing as they always almost fainted each time. Proof how great performers they really are. They're always giving exceptional performances. Same with you I enjoy live performances as well. 💕

FYI, in BTS concert they often use special remixes for their songs that you don't get in official online platforms. In bts concerts, you're not only paying to hear them singing live, you'll also get to see them dancing to a never seen choreography, they sometimes do dancebreaks that are not in the actual songs, you'll get to hear band-remixes of their songs!! PRETTY WILD.

The only reason I haven't put this in the rotation for him yet is because I want him to watch the entire performance and before he does that i want him to see all of the other songs they perform in the show individually and in a "normal" concert setting so he can see how special the MMA 2019 performance is. You aren't over analyzing, lol. In the MMA 2019 performance it's very obvious they are full blown going with the Greek God theme for each of them. They have solo intro performances during that which basically introduces them each as a god.

So back for 2nd night! I’m so glad that you called out that they are NOT LIP SYNCING! There is a performance, can’t remember when/where but I think it’s on LIVE TV maybe awards show in US, and SUGA pulls his mic away from him to prove that they are NOT LIP SYNCING! It was great. I'll reiterate what I'm sure others have said - but it's important: "Dionysus" 2019 MMA (Melon Music Awards; annual Korean music award show in December) performance is EPIC. But also because BTS didn't just perform Dionysus, they performed 3 other full songs, plus individual dance performances of 7 other re-mixed BTS songs.

We used that word in high school (Huntington Beach) in the 80s.......I'm so glad you're doing that - familiarizing yourself with the songs first is the best way to truly appreciate the performance. I'm really happy you respect the group enough to put in that time first. I'm an alt-rock fan (INXS; The Cult; STP, etc) when I discovered BTS, and one of the songs from 2019 MMA is my fave BTS song because it's got guitars and growly vocals reminiscent of alt-rock: "Boy In Luv"

Thank you so much for all the fun reactions. I married a guitarist and pop was far from my radar but I love dance and found BTS in 2017 through dance. I saw this tour in 2019 at Soldier Field,Chicago. It starts late afternoon and by the 5th song they use the sunset as a backdrop to carry into the night. The concert was 3 hours, just them giving us 💯 in every song! I’m 44 and have seen countless concerts and never have I experienced anything as fun as BTS live. Phil X from Bon Jovi was credited as the guitarist and recording engineer for Dionysus. Also their concerts always in the evening and over 3 hours w no front act. In London it gets dark late in summer.

One of the meanest things BTS does is come up with amazing stage remixes of their songs for the tours and then never release them. I need their stage/live mixes so so so badly. Live they are crazy how much energy they put in to kick off/warmup a 2.5 to 3 hour show. Lol I missed the Easter egg.

Wait a minute… 🤔 That’s not Wembley. That’s Japan (Osaka maybe) and this is the opening number so it must have been 6:30pm. Usually BTS’ shows start between 6:30-7:30pm. And they usually have different mixes for live shows that sound slightly different because of the band. You can find videos of the drummer (Khan Sikyoon) playing the live show. I think it was the Wings Tour. And you’re right, night shows look so different!!

I almost always like their live performances better than the studio versions. I don’t know how they do that but their live performances are always so good! I think their company, Hybe, has dancers that perform with them most of the time. But when they have performed in the U.S. lately it has been The Lab out of LA performing with them. Also, the 2019 MMA Dionysus is the better version of it. But you should watch the whole MMA performance sometime.

they are so amazing when they dance and sing at the same time..they do not lip sing at all and its they are truly singing and dancing at the same time...no lip singing at all.. its just amazing to watch. also, my friend she went to go see them live in concert in april in las vegas and she was like omg u dont understand and i said what and she said their vocals/rapping are so amazing live and she said yeah we see them live on youtube but she said its so different when u see them in person and its amazing.... not today is one of the songs i have on my work out playlist with Dionysus love those songs...love this reaction. keep it up!

I know everyone is saying that BTS "NEVER" lipsyncs and I understand why, but I have to say that there were instances in their career where BTS has lipsynced, it's on korean TV shows. Some of those TV shows usually decide how to do things for the groups that perform there. When BTS did some covers of iconic old korean songs, they were definitely lipsyncing it, the performances that I remember the most are for "Perfect man" and "As I told you". And I find it cute how bad they are at pretending to sing live hahahah. You should check it out if you're interested on how it looks when they're lipsyncing lol. Anyways, so I would say BTS mostly doesn't lipsync, especially not during their own concerts, and that's the most important thing ! Same with big award shows, they sing live. But for those little TV music shows, it really depends lol

I think part of the reason those small Korean TV programs pretty much forces everyone to lip sync is because it’s expensive to do sound engineering and correction of live audio. So they just don’t bother and make every performance lip synced lol

They often have harder remixes of songs for concerts… we often wish for them to release them for us after we hear them😅 and this concert was before dusk so it got dark later. I remember being so much into rock music so one of the reasons I got into bts was boy in love released in 2014 and danger mv. I remember they used to do a rock version a lot in their concert and honestly I used to listen to live one more than the original cause they would remix it to have that rock element and it used to sound amazing! There's so many amazing bts songs you could listen, it's hard to choose which one you can start with lol

Ghost is BTS's live band if you're curious. I'm not sure if they were at this specific concert but Ghost usually tours with BTS. They were also the band that played during the live performance of "Baepsae" that you reacted to. One of Ghost's members might've done the guitar riff in "Not Today."

To add to the suggestions I made on the last video, I would add my favourite BTS song, Black Swan.💜 But really, you can't go wrong with any of their songs. Actually in one concert (I'm not sure which one, sorry) Yoongi responded to accusations of lip-syncing by suddenly stopping in the middle of a performance, and letting the music play on behind him. I've only seen KZbin footage of it, but I still remember the smirk on his face. I loved the way he made his point without even saying a word. And I agree that Yoongi is actually a pretty good dancer. Great choice of live performance of the 2 songs. This is actually a favorite of mine, they did the 2 songs back to back throughout the Speak Yourself stadium tour as a concert opener. Song arrangements can be different in live setting which keeps things interesting. You can see BTS practices with them before a concert in their documentaries, and the band is amazing.

You are right about the daylight, of course. Allow me to give you some background information: BTS concerts are 2.5 hours, so they start in the early evening and go into the night. It will turn darker here soon. I think they make sure that the audience can get home safely and also there are probably noise restrictions around stadiums at night. So if they start at 7, the concert will be over by 9.30. I was at two concerts of this tour and simple adjectives are not enough to describe what an experience it was...

You purchase them IF you can. We were at SO-FI, LA, CA concert back in Nov. It was a MADHOUSE, absolutely NO signage, stanchions, directions except on WI-FI which was NOT WORKING, probably because 70,000+ were trying. Anyway, we could NOT get THE ONLY SOUVENIR that we WANTED! I’m 63 non techie so I don’t know how they work, sorry. They’re SPECTACULAR! Weverse has their merchandise but as I said, IF you can find them in stock! They’re about $60.

In the UK with British Summertime it stays light till 9pm so this would have been the opening of the show at 7.30 and it gradually got dark during the course of the show. I appreciate what you are saying about daylight giving the opening song a different feel, but personally I can see the advantage of seeing them in daylight and then also having the army bombs being used later as it goes dark- best of both worlds. 💜

This isn’t Wembley. This is either Japan or in the last of the LY concerts in Korea when they went to Busan, etc. You can tell by the length of JK’s hair. You’ll see that in the Wembley show it was a lot shorter. You can also tell when it shows shots of the audience at the back of the stadium. This concert was a daytime concert.

bts has a band, 95% of their performances are done with their band which is in the background. there are videos of the band playing hidden in the background, their band is called 'ghost. bts does not lip sync period, all singing is live. you should watch the 2019 mma award show performance. bts practices singing on the treadmill for stamina and have 12 -15 background dancers that is part of their company.

Apart from the songs studio version, they have live band on tour and they generally use different remix than the studio version. its bonkers how their concert version are so hyped and crazy good. there is a Trap remix of Dionysus which they performed on Online Concert :) you should check that out too. The difference between Dionysus and Baepsae dance practice videos is that the Baepsae was them showing the choreo for the song Baepsae. Which they performed in their dance studio. This is them showing the practice that they did for a Dionysus live performance. It is practice on the actual stage.

There are behind the stage scenes where they finish a song and beneath the stage they are using o2 tanks because they go harder than their bodies can take sometimes. Jk was notorious for it. As they've gotten older they've learned to pace themselves a little better but I'm sure there's so much we don't see about how sacrificing they are to put on a great show.

This live is from Japan. Speak Yourself 2019 tour. I was at Wembley at this same tour and they sound so good at videos but at live woah it's freaking so good! If im not mistaken the band is prerecorded for most of their concerts.mostly they have concert mixes just for the concerts(which Big Hit should release) in their PTD concerts, they have awesome remixes for Fire(my fave), Black Swan, etc. But in the past i think they had a live band , im not sure which tour it was..but you can hear they are live band. thank you for reacting to this.The MMA Dionysius is probably the most extravagant Dionysius live performance because its extended with a dubstep break.

@@JohnReavesLive trust me the fandom has been asking for their remixes…we even were hoping it to be included in their upcoming anthology alum, but we got clowned lol. But I think you can hear them in soundcloud, just someone recorded them.The orchestral version of Black Swan is the most requested one. Not Today has also a different mix version , other than this performance.
