Exo debuted in 2012 as a group made of 2 parts EXO-K ( composed of 6 korean members) and EXO-M ( 2 Koreans and 4 Chinese members) They sang the same songs but EXO-K sang in Korean and EXO-M in Chinese Mandarin. In 2013/14 they had some songs were the 12 members sang together ( "Growl", "Wolf", "Overdose") so those videos you will see them named as EXO ( korean version, Chinese version) After "Overdose" in 2014, 2 members of EXO-M left and then in 2015 after "Call me Baby" another EXO-M member left. Those 3 that left were Chinese members, so only 1 Chinese member from EXO-M was left. Because they were very few to keep doing promotions as 2 different entities, they were all put into one, 9 members group and the extention K and M were drop out and since "Call me baby" they are known just as EXO. EXO has 2 predebut songs too. "History" and "What is love" ( each has 2 version for EXO-K and EXO-M) "What is love" is the introduction to the main vocalist of each part so in the Mandarin version Chen and Luhan ( ex member) sing and for the Korean version BaekHyun and D.O sing. They have a very complicated story line in which They are Aliens with superpowers sent to earth by their "Mama" (It means Majesty in korean) to protect us from the evil of the red forces that try to destroy the heart of the tree of life and get EXO'S superpowers. They fighting the red forces though time and space, dimensions and parallel universes. "Wolf" and "Growl" are in another universe were they are werewolves with powers. In others they are seen as Aliens. They use their superpowers in their solo works as well, and they are incorporated into the lyrics and Choreographies too. 👽EXO Superpowers🛸 💧 Suho ( leader) Water bending ( he can create and manipulate water) ❄Xiumin (oldest member) Frost/ Ice powers 🦄Lay ( only Chinese member) Healing powers 🌟BaekHyun Light powers. He can create light but also move at light speed. ⚡Chen Lightning, Thunder, can manipulate electricity too. 🔥 Chanyeol Fire/ Phoenix. Can create and manipulate Fire, also makes fireworks 🎆 ☄D.O Strenght, Force, Earth, Gravity. 🌀Kai Teleportation 🌪Sehun Wind, Air bender. Can create and manipulate air and wind, and tornadoes. So when the ex members left their powers were absorved by the K members. Chanyeol can now fly but the dragon powers made his Fire power go out of control. Kai can move things with his mind and Sehun can stop time.

In order to really see the full story you actually have to also watch the EXO-M version of "Mama." The whole point of both the EXO-K (Korean) and EXO-M (Mandarin Chinese) versions of their songs and each MV is to introduce you to EXO's concept and storyline. If you only watch EXO-K, you only see half the story. "Mama" is like the first episode of EXO's drama -- it sets up everything to come in the rest of the series. And if you miss any part of the first episode you will forever be lost when it comes to the rest of EXO's story. "Mama" is EXO's debut song, which came out in 2012. However, they also have two pre-debut songs and MVs that were released a few months before their debut. In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. If you watch both versions of their "Mama" MV, you might be able to understand a little more about EXO's mission and everything they have been sent to Earth to do. Because in the EXO-K version the whole story focuses on the K members, but in the M version it will show you the M members and explain their powers and each of their roles in the story. You only see small clips of the M members in the Korean version. But in the Chinese version the story continues, and the EXO-M members are the ones that are highlighted. In Korean Mama is a term they use to address a leader or king or queen. It's a term of reverence and respect. It's similar to saying "Your majesty." If you watch very many historical Korean dramas you will hear the characters call the royal family, and especially the head of the royal family or leader, "Mama." So, in this song, they are speaking to the leader or deity who sent them to Earth, essentially asking, "Now that I'm here, Your Majesty what should I do? How do I fulfill what you have sent me to do?" etc. If you want to understand EXO's story, it's very important that you pay attention to the introduction story in "Mama" because it is literally setting up EXO's storyline. The narrator is telling you EXO's whole origin story, about how EXO have been split up into two groups EXO-K and EXO-M and they are part of the same group and yet separate -- part of two worlds that come together as one, etc. And he is telling you about how the Tree of Life has been split in half to protect it from falling into the Red Forces' control -- each half of the tree representing one half of EXO (EXO-K and EXO-M) -- and EXO's mission is to find the two halves of the tree and reunite them to restore peace in the world. In the EXO-K version of "Mama" the members are using their powers to search for and meet up with the EXO-M members. That is why you see the K members traveling to find the M member. For example, you see Kai using his power of teleportation as he searches for the M members. And, because Xiumin is a member of EXO-M, you see him appear in the mirror because the K members are searching for him and he is being summoned, etc. As the story goes, when EXO arrived on Earth they did not all arrive together. Their story starts out that they were dropped on Earth in different locations all over the world -- which is explained more in their individual Pathcode teaser videos as part of their "Call Me Baby" comeback promotions -- and they have to search for each other and meet up, kind of like in a quest, before they can begin to figure out how to accomplish the tasks they have been sent to Earth to do. When you see the members all together in their "Mama" MVs they are together because they are still on Planet Exo where they are still united. But when you see them separated this is when they have all been sent to Earth.They keep flashing back and forth between present moments and recent past moments. So, how I interpret the story is that at the end they aren't back together yet, but that is a scene from when they were still on Planet Exo as they are preparing to be sent to Earth. The two worlds the narrator talks about in the introduction could possibly be different dimensions, so you often see parts of their story in their MVs and other content, which could be interpreted as them being in different dimensions or time periods or different moments in history. Each of the members in EXO-K has a counterpart in EXO-M, so part of what you were seeing in this MV was them showing you which EXO-K member corresponded with which EXO-M member. For example, Suho (EXO-K) with the power of water corresponds with Xiumin (EXO-M) who has the power of frost/ice. Chanyeol (EXO-K) with the power of fire is Kris' (EXO-M) counterpart because he is the power of flight, and as you will see when you watch the EXO-M MV, Chanyeol has the power of the phoenix and Kris has the power of the dragon, which both animal spirits have fire elements and flight so they connect. D.O. (EXO-K) with the power of force is connected to Chen (EXO-M) with the power of thunder/lightning. And Sehun (EXO-K), who has the power of wind, is connected to Tao (EXO-M) who controls time. Baekhyun (K) with the power of light is connected to Lay (M) with the power of healing; and Kai (K) with teleportation is linked to Luhan (M) with the power of telekinesis, etc. That's how they maintain their bond even as members of separate groups. Also, the symbols you saw represent each of the members and it has to do with each of their powers. For instance, Kai's symbol is a pyramid and it represents teleportation, and Lay's symbol is a unicorn and it represents his power of healing, etc. (In future MVs and other things to do with EXO, when you see things like a pyramid, you know that is a reference to something to do with Kai, etc.) Even the most minute of details in EXO's content has something to do with their origin story and EXO's storyline. During that screamo part, that was Kai. The "tattoos" on Kai's face and body say EXO and also all of the EXO members names, or at least the 6 EXO-K members names, as well as EXO's symbol and other hidden clues to EXO's origin story. (All of the words on Kai's face and body are in English so if you pause that section and really look you will see there is a whole story even in his body paint, etc. ) Each member in EXO-K also has a partner in EXO-M that fills the same role in their respective group. For example, Baekhyun is the main vocalist in EXO-K and Chen is the main vocalist in EXO-M; D.O. is the other main vocalist in K and Luhan was the other main vocalist in M; Chanyeol is the main rapper in K and Kris was the main rapper in M; Sehun is the lead rapper in K and Xiumin is the lead rapper in M; Kai is the main dancer in K and Lay is the main dancer in M; and then it's Suho is a lead vocalist in K and Tao was a rapper/vocalist in M (I'm not sure how these two really work together because Tao is more of a rapper and Suho is a vocalist, but because they are the last two they are put together.) To understand even more of their story, you should also look up the English translation of the lyrics for "Mama." The majority of the gregorian chant is in English: "Shoot anonymous, anonymous; Heartless, mindless; No one who care about me ... Careless, careless (Mama: Mama in Korean means Your Majesty); Shoot anonymous, anonymous (Mama); Heartless, mindless (Mama); No one who care about me (Mama)" Also, if you pay attention to what the whole song is about and what they are talking about in the lyrics, it will give you even more insight into why EXO have been sent to Earth and what their mission is all about. EXO's storyline begins with them being sent to Earth to try and heal the world and to stop and prevent the Red Force from taking over and corrupting everything. And the story in the lyrics of "Mama" foreshadows what they will have to overcome and understand about humans and our world to accomplish their tasks. In this song EXO kind of takes humanity to task and asks us to explain why we would allow all this anger and hatred to cloud everything around us and why we don't love each other more? It's really a very beautiful message and the more you learn about EXO the more interesting the whole thing becomes. In the song the members, being aliens from another planet, are struggling to understand how we as humans could allow all this evil and bad things to happen all around us, such as war, hatred and the destruction of the environment, etc. and they are daunted by the fact that they are now tasked with figuring out how to fix it all and prevent more evil from taking place. That's why they need to find the two halves of the Tree of Life and reunite them to restore peace. EXO's story is part supernatural and Sci-Fi and part based on reality, which touches on real life events and things that are really happening in the world. And from the very beginning, even during pre-debut days, and everything since then and everything yet to come, it all is connected to that storyline. Everything EXO does and everything you see from them, including Baekhyun's and Kai's parts in SM Entertainment's supergroup SuperM, all has something to do with the concept and story that began with "Mama," and each new installment of something from the members expands a little further on EXO's story. Whether it's an MV from the group, a solo project from one of the members, a sub-unit project, a live performance, teaser videos, concert VCRs, or even a good amount of their choreography, it all has been designed to connect to EXO's storyline.

One commenter opined that the group was on earth for so long, they got caught up in human vices: gambling, drugs, greed, etc. That is shown in several performances. But my feeling is more like they are fighting to eliminate these evils and to stop the Red Force's control. I think all these things may be what the Red Force is using to gain control of humanity and EXO are trying to break us of our vices and to stop the Red Force from using these things to control us, etc.

I still want Exo to be from Exo planet and not come from Kwangya. When Xiumin's Brand New MV came out, the scene where he had a giant parcel label behind him says "From Kwangya" , i was not pleased 😥 I saw a clip of one of the Super Junior members being asked what he thought about the Kwangya concept and the expression on his face before he answered was so funny. EXO was so popular in Korea 2013-2017 that there is a saying that our youth was called EXO. When someone is really popular in Korea, even non-fans know a lot about this person because Korea is a relatively smaller country with trends that are followed by most of general population. EXO was everywhere. Their cute and happy songs really touched the hearts of many. For example, their early songs like Lucky, Peter Pan, their winter albums. These songs may not appeal to other cultures right now, but they were what Koreans liked during that time. When Growl came out, it was revolutionary. The concept was so fresh. They were also known for synchronized dancing and their harmonies and of course their looks. However, they also went through a lot. Three of the Chinese members left. Antis discredited their talent by saying that popularity is due to their good looks. But they worked hard and remained humble. Thank you for reacting to EXO! Just an FYI. EXO is pronounced as one word like XO. Each of the debuting 12 members had their own special power (Exok 6 members Exom 6 members) mirrored each other. Wind, fire, water, transportation and etc where their individual specialties. Throughout all of EXO’s videos you will find the continuing storyline. As far as vocals and harmonization you won’t find a group who does this better.

EXO-M released the same song but in Chinese. A lot of the members there have already left. Lay was the one you liked in the Monster video, and he's in that MV! The whole schtick is that EXO-M and EXO-K have superpowers and combine forces to defeat the evil that's trying to kill the heart of the tree in the beginning. Most if not all of their MV's revolve around the fight against that evil. The lore is actually pretty profound tbh.

I remember CLEARLY watching this when it came out in 2012, 10 years ago...I was working kinda remotely on a beach in Maryland and I did not have internet so i had to drive a good 30min to Panera Bread on the weekends to catch up with everything. So I remember clearly my feelings while watching this for the first time at Panera Bread lol. Ive been listening to kpop since 2010, 2011. When S.M started teasing photos for members of EXO I knew I had to be there when they debuted! I was blown away! Ive been EXO-L ever since! Just having this memory of their debut and still getting chills from this song 10 years laters just shows how powerful they are. Baekhyun is my bias and has been since debut! His voice is unreal and I highly recommend his solo songs and albums, especially Bambi!

So this was their Debut.....so the beginning was a summary of their overall concept/storyline. As EXO-L's, its out job to figure out their story from the clues we get in each MV. The MV's are not in Storyline chronological order. Its rather confusing and we only know some of it, we are still theorizing a lot of it. This was 2012....and there is a lot to learn, but if you didn't get it from the intro, they are legendary aliens from EXO Planet, each of them has a super power. The eye of the red force (bad guy), wants to consume/covets their tree of life and wants to destroy or consume the legends. To protect the tree, they split the 12 member group in half and come to earth to hide it. In the beginning they were 12 members strong, promoting in Korean and Chinese. By 2015, there were 9 members and remained that way, though promoted as 8 while Lay was unable to promote due to political issues between the countries. By obsession military services needed to be fullfilled, so members would still promote and make albums but with less members until they are all back by like 2025. So now, the legends live among us on earth and have for many many years, using their powers to keep us safe and defeat the red force. There is much much more to get into, but that' might break your brain, it did mine the first time i learned about it. There is literally so much and so many different theories. So for now, let's skip that until you are into them enough to want to learn more. To add to your comment about the world they are in....we're fairly certain that is their EXO Planet, though not sure if its before or after the Red Force came and began destruction. You watched the EXO-K version (Suho/water, Baekhyun/Light, Chanyeol/Fire, Kai/Teleportation, Sehun/Wind, D.O./Force or Earth) if you watch the EXO-M version you'll see the other six: (Lay/healing, Xiumin/Frost, Chen/Thunder and Lightning, Tao/Time, Kris/Flight, Luhan/Telekinisis)

Mama means Your Majesty in Korean. Exo used to have 2 units: Exo K (promoting in Korean) and Exo M (promoting in Mandarin) So there is an Exo M version of this MV. When three of the Exo M members left, they combined the remaining 9 members to promote as just Exo (pronounced X-O). This group concept of being aliens from another planet with super powers was unheard of at the time. They are not the typical boyband. They are also very versatile trying out different genres but also staying true to their R&B roots. Thanks for the react.

I think you meant Morgan Freeman and not Samuel L. Jackson, lol, but no, it's not him. The intro is in deed a intro to their concept, introducing their background story. Each member is supossed to have a power (hence why you see them telaport, control water, wind, light, fire, etc). It is their debut song (if I'm not mistaken). I loved their rock presentation of this song in a award show. but the mics volume and the camera work didn't do them proper justice. Wish they'd do it again just for funsies :v
