One of the many things that drives my adoration and respect of B-M is who they are, their attitudes and behaviours, I left the music industry in large part because of the BS, arrogant a-holes, diva behaviour, this fck the fans attitude. These Rock Goddesses could run rings around most rock musicians but unlike so many of the tools in the business they continually display humility and gratitude to thier fan base and express a desire to simply do their best. To this jaded old drummer this is utterly refreshing. These marvellous docos help exemplify this. What a fcken band Po 👍🍻🍻

There's an interview (maybe in the mook that came with Conqueror, but I don't remember) where Akane remembered something that happened early in the band's existence. When Kanami called her about joining, she said she didn't want to be in an all-girl band because in her experience they wouldn't take it seriously, and Akane wanted to make a career out of playing music. Kanami assured her that she had the same goal and she gave her word that they would be a serious band. Then they had a rehearsal and three of the members were late; and not just a little bit late. It was just Akane and Kanami, and Kanami cried because she had committed to her friend and the others were making a joke of it. When they finally showed up, Akane tore into them and yelled at them for making her friend cry. That might be behind the "band leader" title, and she said they've never missed a rehearsal since. Last year for Kanami's birthday she wrote a very sweet letter, saying that Kanami had changed her life.

The story about the others being late is true. And, yes indeed, Kanami did cry. After that incident, no one came late to the rehearsals.

On the official fan site, in the O-MEI-SYU SAMA members only videos, there's a discussion between Akane and Miku, from May 2022, talking about the process of learning new BM songs, where Akane writes out note for note the drum patterns to memorize them, and she learns the hand patterns by sections first and then adds in the footwork. They talk about how hard Black Hole was and live in fear of Kanami writing something faster than 225 bpm. In September 2022 Akane wrote a newsletter piece as her tribute to her friend Kanami, and she talks about Band-Maid being a Community of Destiny, so they feel that special bond as well. The fact that these ladies honestly feel that family bond shows through in their social media content, and it shows on stage just how much respect they have for each other. They really are a one of a kind band.

The Japanese character と "to" (said like "toe" or "tow" in Japanese) means "and" so the band name もち (mochi) と (to) チーズ (cheese) meant Mochi AND Cheese. Being that mochi is usually a sweet snack with a texture kind of like a soft gummy candy, I'm not sure if that combo would be my cup of tea but maybe the meant separately lol.

My favorite bit of Band-Maid trivia will always be the Kanami/Akane/Misa connection. How cool it must be for Akane to be in a band for 10+ years with her friend from the local music scene, and with her friend from music school. The universe aligned perfectly for these three to come together.

Misa told the story about her part in Blooming, she was drunk and created a very difficult play before sending it to Kanami. When they joined to play together and arrange the music, she needed extra effort to play her own part. Misa doesn’t always have an earplug on stage, her barefoot is also a way to feel the music of the other members, specially Akane’s rythme. I would suggest to listen to Yolo B-face (Matchless Gum and Unfair Game). Akasne is always improving, Shamblws and From now on drums are so impressive.

I've seen these documentaries a few times, & just love the reactors reactions. Yours included. We've all come away from them feeling that we are almost friends with the Maids. Simply because of all the background information we learn about them. It's like we've known them for a long time. I can't wait to see your reaction to Miku. Her story is just sensational. She is one of the most beautiful little creatures on the planet. And a true little rock star.

A friend of mine that i played in bands with just had a daughter and was lamenting that there aren't many female shredders he can try to have her look up to when she's older. I just went "you're coming to Babymetal with me, don't ask questions, and we're getting drinks and watching Band Maid before the show." You could say he fell into the rabbit hole. I love Akane's story so much. Great documentary. EDIT - Misa is like the most rock and roll chick to ever rock and roll.

John, I don't know it, but there is a picture on the internet of Akane with Jimmy Page. I believe you have heard of him. He caught one of Band Maid concerts and was so impressed so much by her he asked to go backstage after the show and meet Akane. Akane thought she was being pranked but agreed to meet him. That's when the picture was taken. It's said he compared her favorable to John Bonham. I believe you have heard of him as well. I recently saw a video of two music critics that discussed why he was such a great drummer. They noted that Jimmy Page would change timing between choruses in their songs. Bonham was so adept at keeping up with the changes and kept the beat all the time, while using fills and flourishes. That reminds me very much of what Kanami does on Band Maid songs and Akane not only keeps up with the changes and adds so many incredible flourishes and fills.
@richardn8866 Жыл бұрын
I get so tired of that story. Akane surpassed Bonham years ago. She is no longer just about feel and groove. She has passed into Professor territory, where every hit and silence has a purpose to the structure of the song. FYI! I'm a Paice fan first.

The photo of Akane and Jimmy Page was taken backstage at the "Classic Rock [magazine] Roll of Honor Awards" show held in Tokyo on Nov. 11, 2016, and on Nov. 14 Akane posted the photo and wrote that Jimmy Page told her (translating her Japanese), "Your playing was wonderful." B-M played "Thrill" after receiving an award, which is what Page was referring to. Page was a presenter at the awards show---not to B-M but to Jeff Beck.

Happy to see you continuing with these! I completely agree about the "divine intervention" thing. It's a miracle that these people got together how and when they did. Wait till you hear about what Miku did to make this happen. One thing I like to point out about these videos is how lucky we are to have a lot of the content. For example, it's completely random that somebody recorded that video of Akane in a bar band and even focused on her, then put that video on KZbin. Or that, thanks to the Wayback Machine, we have a picture of the website asking for applicants to Band-Maid. There are several interviews the "Official Score for Unseen World" and they mention that Akane struggled the most at the beginning in terms of going off-time/rhythm. Hard to believe now. Of Misa they just say, "She's always been a genius." lol Akane's injury was a back injury caused by her playing style at the time which, though it looked cool, if you watch it it's easy to see why it would cause an injury. She's completely changed her form since then. If you want to see this old form you can search for her cover of "Benjo Sandal Dance".

It's good that these two ladies should be considered together. The two tallest members of the band- Misa 5'7", Akane 5'6". Great buddies on and off stage and lastly but mostly the fantastic dynamic rhythm section of this band. Akane's Tama Bubinga kit is the loudest you can get- it's all down to material and construction.

These are five of the most strong willed women I have ever seen. They are the kind that will try anything that interests them, but if it isn't what they are looking for, they will move on. They might not even know what they are looking for initially, but when they find it, they go for it with every inch of their being. There wouldn't be a Band Maid if not for their striving to be the best they can be.

The thing about band-maid members that astounded me is that they all loved music as kids, but none of them are child prodigy I thought they were. It's not uncommon for Japanese kids to try out a few instruments - it's a passing phase for most of us. You don't have to start your main instrument at a young age to be great and the ladies all proved that. I'm such a slack person but the maids always inspire to do more.
@wave8359 Жыл бұрын
This is very interesting observation !-----yes, they are not actually "prodigies"------and some of them had passed the stage of infancy, or even childhood---before getting down to the work that drew them. Well seen !

When Kanami hands off the Demo to Akane and MISA to do their thing with it, MISA will often write her bass part on piano keyboard, so that she doesn't fall into the trap of playing familiar bass patterns, but write what the song needs. Akane will often complain, "This drum part cannot be played by a human being." Good thing she is The Half Gorilla & Half Drum Machine "Beast" then, because she always comes up with something awesome she can play. It's like when John Lennon would give Ringo a record from another band and say, "Play something like that, Ring." And Ringo would have to tell him, "But, John, that's two drummers!" If you haven't see the video where great drummers talk about Ringo's drumming, you should. He's very much like Akane, though not as technical. He had to be talked into playing his one and only solo for their song, The End. Akane also has only one full drum solo in 'Freedom' LIVE. Let's hope it's not the last.

I was at a show when it was Misa's birthday. When Miku announced it was her birthday. Everyone sang Happy Birthday to her in Japanese. Misa became verrry emotional. Had her hands covering her face, and she was very teary eyed. Miku forced her hands down, and then you could see a huge smile from her, she was red-faced but waved back and kept saying thank you. Kanami became very excited for her so did Akana, Saiki had this super huge smile. I'm not to sure she realized till then, how much she was truly loved here in the states. There's a video of it on here somewhere. Each time they finished a show on that 2022 Oct US tour. they ladies showed just how grateful they were. One of them at least, was very teary eyed after the show saying thank you over and over again. I have been lucky enough to see these amazing ladies 5 times. Twice in Dallas, Twice in Huston and once in Austin. I wouldn't make a 12 hr round trip drive to Houston if they weren't good, or a 8 hr round trip to Austin 6 hr round trip to Dallas. If you get the chance to see them. Do yourself a favor and do it.

Ohrenje has done great work. The Band Maid Nippon Manga chats are great. Band Maid connects directly to my squid brain. I can give you a list of reasons; tone, musicianship, composition, and mixing, but ultimately, it's a gestalt thing. Nothing ever like them or their sound. Re. Akane, I think I read in an interview that Akane said she had played in a hotel band that did 80s rock numbers, and she had to know 300 or 400 songs. Don't know if this is accurate, but it would explain part of her rock fundamental sound. Also, for some insight into Akane, check out her crying during "Endless Story" at Chicago HoB. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYCwYWCDls2jd9k. I measure my Band Maid experiences (only four so far) by how far I am from Misa. Between eight and twenty feet! Cheers!
