To me, metal studs are easier to buy at the home store. When I buy wood, I spend a lot of time picking through to get straighter / acceptable lumber. Even then it seems like a compromise. Just went today and left a pile in the isle and when they asked me if I needed help I told them to put a sign on that pile of wood and sell for firewood.

Built my own custom design home theater with the metal studs so much more cleaner vs cutting the wood and saw dust. So I essentially have floated out a completely different design room inside of the existing room. So by using a skeleton framework of the steel studs framed work in have complete remodel my spare bedroom into a fully functional home theater with a very small performance stage area of 4’D bye 10’ Wide By 8’H. pros and cons. I had termite damage in the past and had a lot of damage. I do like the idea of framing metal in a basement because of the high humidity where I live. biggest drawback is trying to mount shelves or even blinds. its a pain. I find ways around it with various plugs and toggles but the most sturdy mount is finding the old wooden stud

Commercial and institutional projects use metal. It is by far superior for a basement that could leak. For interior partitions that are non-load bearing walls it makes a lot of sense.

I do work with metal framing everyday on industrial jobsite. The best thing you can do witht the door frame is to frame it with metal studs but inside the metal studs but a 2x3 and fix it there with some screws or whatever you have that can secure them in place. I did that over an Hilton Hotel with around 900 door frames and it works beautifully.

@@Rpp92898 You can get packs of 10 equivalent sized steel studs at construction supply houses for $25 for 10. They're also 20 gauge steel and that is quite strong. I know it's an old post, but you didn't seem to mention the important fact that you cant really mount anything solid in a metal stud wall. can't put a solid shelf on the wall or anything that would traditionally require lag screws. I researched building with metal for my studio and and the fact that I can't mount my studio speakers to a wall was a deal breaker for me. Yes, I know I can do wood bracing at construction, but how many people know their forever layout prior to drywall? To have an entire wall that I cant mount anything but pictures to is a massive waste of usable space. Metal is also inferior thermally since it's a heat/cold conductor instead of an insulator... not to mention it's less heat resistant in the event of fire and metal buildings when on fire tend to collapse much faster than stick built because the studs warp under heat. To me, something affecting the "get out of the burning house time" of a residential structure is also worth mentioning. Isn't that why metal isn't code compliant for residential in many areas? I don't see this as a comparison video, but more of a "this is why I like metal" video. Nonetheless, thanks for making it and it was still helpful.
@seddyf2 жыл бұрын
Building a house soon and seriously considering metal over wood. I can honestly say I don’t know much of the specifics when it comes to fire and the metal being more of a hindrance than wood but I do know you’re wrong in the thought that you can’t mount anything solid to a metal studded wall. I’ve been mounting 100+lbs plasmas on metal studs for over 15yrs now with 1/2” toggle bolts. That along with shelving and many other mountable items with no issue. Just can’t use lag screws like you’re used to is all. “Right tools for the project”
@ac14081408 Жыл бұрын
@@seddyf yes 1/2" toggle bolts and you're good to go. Rockwool in the interior walls will insulate/deaden sound and are not flammable. Select non flammable drapes and other mindful steps. Install sprinklers for each area. Outer walls should be ICF. Metal frame roof with"raised seam" metal roof. Deck pan concrete floors with PEX hydronic tubes installed. Even if you're not doing heated floors now you may want them ready for later. Metal is better....ICF exterior/all the way up with metal guts. Good luck on your build!

@greatestever63723 жыл бұрын
Well sense we are dealing with opinions I’ll state the facts, Simply put Metal is cheaper in price that’s why so many builders will tell you they love it! You can’t screw a heavy load to the wall without drilling huge holes to apply special hardware for said items. Also the walls become very flimsy and loud when tapping on them not to mention the majority of the buildings that these builders build lay the metal out two feet on center making the structure of buildings weak and cheap like a tin can I’ll stick with my solid wood studs.

Coming from Europe, I guess wood is more expensive here. I haven't seen anyone here using wood, metal is the only option available. After watching the video, metal seems to be the better approach anyway. I am also wondering how does it go with mice, I do not have termites in my area, but I can surely hear mice partying at night in my drywalls (for me that's the downside of them overall, getting a dead mouse in the wall and having to deal with the stench for a while).
@sindrehansen96472 жыл бұрын
Actually, cutting down trees is good for the enviroment as long as you replant and don't burn the wood
@SouthCalifas6195 жыл бұрын
Wait doesnt metal attract lightning tho? Would it be safe to live in a metal structured home in a high lightning storm area?
@phillipgraham14225 жыл бұрын
SouthCalifas619 In fact, it would safer to live in a metal house assuming you have a metal roof. If that is the case then the current from the lightning will simply flow through the frame of the house towards ground. In a wood house the beams create resistance and thus an opportunity for heat to be made and a fire to be started. As well in a metal house you can’t burn the primary construction material so any fire started by means of lightning would most likely be negligible.
