I just got my Medium Black version of the Wharncleaver. Very nice knife for the price. Great packaging! Quick service and shipping. Very satisfied. This is a gift for a friend who loves the attitude of the Honey Badger, but I now must have one for myself. Thanks to Western Active.

Honey Badger knives are made in South Africa, by Ultratec. Western Active is the US distributers. The USD to ZAR exchange rate is one of the reasons why they are so well priced.

Great knives. Only negatives for me are the FRN scales. Edges and jumping are a little sharp for my taste, but that is easy enough to fix. Enjoy the action, weight, and pocket clip a lot.

I have an odd need for a large, serrated hawkbill that isn't a karambit (for foraging) and I think their biggest one might do the trick. 🤔 Thanks for the look.
@JustIn-op6oy3 жыл бұрын
I think spyderco makes a couple models that would fit that role. I really like their fully serrated edges, almost as much as Cold Steel who do the best serrations in my opinion.
@GrumpyGrunt3 жыл бұрын
@@JustIn-op6oy Spyderco makes a couple that are large enough to fit the bill, but they are also kind of expensive (Citizen, Matriarch...). Their budget serrated hawkbills I find affordable are too small.
@JustIn-op6oy3 жыл бұрын
@@GrumpyGrunt have you checked out their Byrd lineup? They're very well done for the price and whatever heat treatment technique they're using on 8Cr really gets the most out of the steel.

One thing I really like about FRN as opposed to materials like g10 is being able to safely & quickly wetsand the scales. I've done that on a handful of knives to smooth out texturing where the pocket clip lands. Also, I don't generally get a "cheap" feeling from an otherwise well constructed FRN handled knife. It never made sense to me how some people get really bent out of shape about it.
@JustIn-op6oy3 жыл бұрын
It also just occurred to me - to go along with the variety of parts available and the seeming expectation of being modded, I've seen customized folders with hard-setting modeling putty overmold on stock scales of other knives (like the modeling clay used in kitbash and modified scale models). I would expect the honeycomb texturing to bond really well there and work as a base for a cloth & epoxy DIY scale.

Did you ever dye the scales?

So glad you revisited this brand, they've been out-of-sight and mind. Now that we can rit-dye blanks and get parts, it might be fun to purchase and customize!

I don’t like how flexible it is, but I really like the knife. You can actually disengage the lock without touching the lock by bending the knife and closing it. I wish I could get over that so I could buy another one.

These look like a great budget option. The only thing I'm not digging is the scale pattern. I'd tell that to the manufacturer but I'm sure "Honey Badger don't care". Great review as always.

I have an older Honey Badger with a flipper delete. Carry and use it a lot. As much as more exclusive knives that constitute the bulk of my collection. The HB is a lot of fun to handle. The FRN has nice texturing and feels secure in the hand. Excellent blade geometry. My only complaint is the steel. I'd gladly pay $100 for a sprint with better steel, just as I would with a CJRB Ria. Wildly impressed with both models.

Wow M.C.!! I just bought the sm, med & large about 2 weeks ago. Think 2 drop points and a sheepsfoot. For ME,,, they're excellent work knives. If I break it/ beat on it, I'm not heartbroken. I just leave a couple of um in my work truck. Mine were all well centered, dropshutty right outta the box, haven't turned a screw on any of them. It's like getting a rental car for a month. Didn't know about the spare parts!! Thanks!! GREAT VID AS ALWAYS!! Stay safe, stay sharp 👍🇺🇸👍🔪

Good all rounder knives that are proudly south african designed! i have the medium "sheep's foot" with tan scales. hoping to get the small flipper (Spear point) soon. i did notice out the box the edges on the scales were a bit "edgy" but after a light rub down no more issues. thank you for the review, always start my morning with your unboxing vids & coffee.

I had a small Honey Badger, didn't love the size. The in hand feel-felt cheep (frn) to me but the action felt quality and I like the original design very much. I would like to try a large out for size and feel but the price just wont let me do it. Too many good options with better materials. Customizing a already overpriced knife doesn't appeal to me either. Great review!!!

Always liked the style of the honey badger, their wharncleaver is just a really appealing blade shape to me. Personally actually happy to see they offer something else than D2, even if it isn't very premium. I just loathe d2 because I don't like dealing with rust :(

Honestly, a small squirt of WD-40, let it sit for a few minutes, and a quick wipe down of the excess ought to be sufficient in most environments.

These are fun. Not sure why the D2 versions are so much more expensive than the 8Cr13MoV though. It's a lot, and you can do better for the price of the D2 versions. Love the design of the drop point ones though.

As with anything, body sweat, type of use and location are important. Ive never rusted my carbon steel knives but i wipe them down after use. Stainless knives will spot if the user jogs and never dries for example.
