The thing that people who don't understand why we carry knives fail to realize, is that their stance is the odd one throughout the entirety of human history until only the past couple of generations. That the edged tool, aside perhaps from the harnessing of fire, was one of the most revolutionary breakthroughs of all mankind, likely to the degree that it shaped our evolution as a species. This leads to the logical conclusion (and answer to those who don't understand carrying knives or see it as uncivilized), that without knives there would be no civilization in which to be uncivilized in the first place. In order to protect our knife rights for the future, we need to hold the stance, and point it out to others that don't understand, that the edged tool is essential, and that the idea of not carrying a knife is the ridiculous one.

I’ve carried one since age 9, starting with SAKs and eventually realized that the blade covered most of my needs. I also ride a motorcycle so I always have a backpack where I keep tools I might need, including a beater knife or two. I use the knife for all kinds of stuff.. packages/boxes, a handful of work tasks, food, whatever needs a cut.. As for nice knives.. I carry one every day and I just like having a nice high quality object to handle and fiddle with. I don’t really consider myself a collector and buy them to use, so considering that I usually edc any particular knife for years before I upgrade, a could hundred bucks isn’t all that much overall.. for example, the crk in my pocket cost half of what my annual insurance payment, and I use/enjoy it much more than my insurance policy.

We were walking down the road and this poor old woman was selling roses there in a small stall as couples walk by that place a lot here. She claimed that all these roses were grown by her in her own garden. My date, she said "oh wow" (not in english, we are from India). I picked for her the biggest one. We walked some distance and I noticed that the rose stem wasn't cleaned properly, it still had some thorns. I pointed it out she said she'll be careful with it. I asked for the rose, took out my pocket knife and cleaned the thorns. She was like "why do you have a knife in your pocket" I replied with a cheesy line "so that i can care for the people I like better" She blushed and looked visibly impressed... We would go on 3 more dates after that and use this knife many times. We are together now. Yes... I sure did feel like a champ every time.

My thoughts on the self defense angle: no judgement, just hoping to share my experience and see if it resonates with y'all. I used to work as a Domestic Violence Survivor's advocate in Franklin County Kansas (That's Ottawa KS, one county South of KU), and people asked me a *LOT* why I didn't carry a gun. In my experience, when a violent man sees you talking to his ex girlfriend at the county courthouse and assumes you're her new boyfriend, your goal is to de-escalate the situation. Like yeah, run if you have to, but if it gets to the point where the best option is to run? You've already failed to de-escalate. You know what escalates the hell out of a situation? The pissed off guy you're talking to realizing you're strapped, or you pulling a knife. I actually switch out my carry to a Spyderco Chaparal (or nothing at all) if I know I'm heading into a situation where conflict is likely, so that my stupid man brain raised on action movies doesn't convince me that stabbing a guy is a good life decision. Or, to be more realistic, pulling a knife, getting punched in the face, and then getting stabbed with my own knife.

No joke I know the stereotype and everything But for real The person who asked, was from California Went to go visit an ill friend in the hospital, had a big group go, my family (5 + grandma) the California friend, and about 10 other people Someone in the group, in the waiting room, said “awe man, this string is coming out of my shirt, does anyone have a knife?” Pretty much all of us pulled out knives, save for my mother, California friend, and the person who asked California friend went “WHAT!?! YOU ALL HAVE KNIVES?!? IN A HOSPITAL? WHY?!?” Why wouldn’t you?

Two things: First. My #1 self-defense tool is my brain. To paraphrase Mr. Miyagi: the best defense is to not be there, and the brain can do that. Don't be in that dark alley. Don't be at that party under the overpass. Don't be in the car with a "friend of a friend" who always shoots his mouth off to the wrong people. It's also the thing that tells you "*now* is the time to GTFO!" I worked as a bouncer in Chicago for the better part of two years. I never once threw a punch or had one thrown at me. Because I was always able to say some variation of "Sir, you might be right: you might be able to kick my... what did you say... my 'stupid bald dumb ass', that's right. But you're drunk enough that you're visibly weaving, and I haven't had a drink since last night, so my odds aren't good. More importantly, if I'm right, I'll beat *your* ass, and if you're right, and you beat my 'stupid bald dumb ass' the *six* other bouncers who are already converging on us will make certain that it will be six months before you can chew your food or sign your name again. So... sir, I'm again going to ask you to not get up on the tables. If you just stay off the tables, everybody walks away in peace, and you get to continue drinking." Part of the trick is to be super calm and chill and not project any hostility. Never failed for me. Second: I would argue that many of these knives *are* the right tool for the job. They might not be the *ideal* tool, but they're the right one. The key is to rate the knife on multiple axes. Don't just ask "is this knife the best tool in the world for this job?" Instead ask "Can this tool do this job? Is there a better tool for this job? Is taking twice as to do this job with this knife better than talking half as long... after I've taken five minutes to go back into the house to get a more ideally suited tool? Is using this knife for this job unlikely to cause injury? Damage the knife?" And everybody's going to have different answers for these questions at different times. But when you take into account multiple factors, including but not limited to: speed, convenience, personal safety, equipment safety, and ever just personal satisfaction... that knife is often very much the right tool.

Don't get me wrong, I love and use my knives, but it sounds like you would benefit greatly from a Leatherman Micra. It's tiny, you can put it in your 5th pocket and forget about it. It handles so many of the the things on your list, especially zip ties, much better than a knife and can do even more. And it's a tiny backup blade. If you carried one for a week or two I just about guarantee you'd see that it'd make your life much easier.

I've tried carrying various Leathermans/multi tools. I just don't like them in my pocket or hanging off me in a pouch. I keep a wave+ in my truck. I like it there. I prefer a single blade folding knife in my pocket 👍

Christmas morning - the granddaughters bring every toy to me to open. Barbies are a JOB to open, with all of the attachments to the backing.

Might need to open a mustard pack, box, or something. I also use knives for marking sometimes. I’m a woodworker. Got to have a blade.

I'm a guy who has a few knives for EDC and self defense purposes. But unlike all you good people, i find myself harldy ever needing it for those everyday purposes and i pray i never have to use one to defend myself. So i guess i'm living by the "Have it and not need it then need it and not have it" motto😂

because kitchen knives would rip my pants, and I don't like sheaths. Leeroy Jethro Gibbs rule #9--never go anywhere without a knife. Never know when you're going to have to cut some damsel in distress out of a zip tie or duct tape.

I've carried a knife regularly since I was 10. I even carried them to school. I don't think I've ever had someone ask why I carry one haha. Maybe just because where I live it's pretty normal to have a knife on you. Forgot my knife at work one day and they asked me if I needed to back and get my dress...

I had to do that the other day, I wiped one of the electric stove plates with a synthetic towel, and it melted it and stuck on the stove, had to bust out my Endura and scrape that crap off. It smelled terrible.

Today's reason to carry a knife was, "Needed to cut off a piece of bent/cracked plastic weather stripping that was keeping the window on my side door from closing all the way." Either disassemble window taking 30 minutes to do it "right" to get at it with a razor knife, or take 30 seconds and stuff the skinny PM2 in the tiny gap and presto, 29 minutes saved.

I am training a new guy at work. One of the rubber air seals was bent under itself and causing a leak. This dude pulls out a Coast utility razor and starts to dig at the seal... I almost lost my shit. Wrong tool for the job nut sack! 🤬 And scissors were meant for paper, thread and Korean food. That's it.

When I carry a knive, my sister always asks why, and I tell her it's a tool, self defence weapon and a survival tool when you need it the most. So why not carry a knife.

Several times I have used a large folder for defensive intimidation. I am 65 with 2 artificial knees and an artificial hip running away is not an option for me. I was on business in a" good" area of the city but someone had bad designs on me
