I always tell people that you never realize how handy a pocket knife is until you start carrying one. I’ve carried one since age 9, starting with SAKs and eventually realized that the blade covered most of my needs. I also ride a motorcycle so I always have a backpack where I keep tools I might need, including a beater knife or two. I use the knife for all kinds of stuff.. packages/boxes, a handful of work tasks, food, whatever needs a cut.. As for nice knives.. I carry one every day and I just like having a nice high quality object to handle and fiddle with. I don’t really consider myself a collector and buy them to use, so considering that I usually edc any particular knife for years before I upgrade, a could hundred bucks isn’t all that much overall.. for example, the crk in my pocket cost half of what my annual insurance payment, and I use/enjoy it much more than my insurance policy.

The thing that people who don't understand why we carry knives fail to realize, is that their stance is the odd one throughout the entirety of human history until only the past couple of generations. That the edged tool, aside perhaps from the harnessing of fire, was one of the most revolutionary breakthroughs of all mankind, likely to the degree that it shaped our evolution as a species. This leads to the logical conclusion (and answer to those who don't understand carrying knives or see it as uncivilized), that without knives there would be no civilization in which to be uncivilized in the first place. In order to protect our knife rights for the future, we need to hold the stance, and point it out to others that don't understand, that the edged tool is essential, and that the idea of not carrying a knife is the ridiculous one.

I do shipping and receiving in a warehouse and pipe yard loading, unloading freight and pipe trucks and I use my R2D2 for opening crates, cutting nylon banding, zip ties, slicing 7' wide cardboard slabs and foam wrapping to for packaging powder coated fence and gate panels, opening freight, cutting tape, and the occasional trailer straps etc etc. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. I've been carrying an collecting knives since I was around 13 years old I'm 34 now and own 22 different folders and 6 fixed blades for hunting fishing etc. A standard box cutter can do all these things but eventually you'll have to find and then beg your superintendent for a fresh blade, or you drop the thing from pocket height and it detonates into 40 damned pieces when it hits the floor. With my R2D2 on the other hand I can sharpen it during my breaks if I find its getting dull ,its survived multiple drops from heights of about 30 feet up sometimes, as well as open and close it with my work gloves on or off far quicker and all those seconds add up when I got dead lines to meet also its never opened in my pocket and cut me or fell out of my pocket and got lost during the 50th time I had to get in and out my forklift that day lol. My point here is that an in-disposable beats a disposable tool any day of the week. Great vid btw, not that I personally need the justifications but its good to have the extra ammo the next time I'll eventually have to have this conversation with a co worker lol

My thoughts on the self defense angle: no judgement, just hoping to share my experience and see if it resonates with y'all. I used to work as a Domestic Violence Survivor's advocate in Franklin County Kansas (That's Ottawa KS, one county South of KU), and people asked me a *LOT* why I didn't carry a gun. In my experience, when a violent man sees you talking to his ex girlfriend at the county courthouse and assumes you're her new boyfriend, your goal is to de-escalate the situation. Like yeah, run if you have to, but if it gets to the point where the best option is to run? You've already failed to de-escalate. You know what escalates the hell out of a situation? The pissed off guy you're talking to realizing you're strapped, or you pulling a knife. I actually switch out my carry to a Spyderco Chaparal (or nothing at all) if I know I'm heading into a situation where conflict is likely, so that my stupid man brain raised on action movies doesn't convince me that stabbing a guy is a good life decision. Or, to be more realistic, pulling a knife, getting punched in the face, and then getting stabbed with my own knife.

She claimed that all these roses were grown by her in her own garden. My date, she said "oh wow" (not in english, we are from India). I picked for her the biggest one. We walked some distance and I noticed that the rose stem wasn't cleaned properly, it still had some thorns. I pointed it out she said she'll be careful with it. I asked for the rose, took out my pocket knife and cleaned the thorns. She was like "why do you have a knife in your pocket" I replied with a cheesy line "so that i can care for the people I like better" She blushed and looked visibly impressed... We would go on 3 more dates after that and use this knife many times. We are together now. Yes... I sure did feel like a champ every time.

It handles so many of the the things on your list, especially zip ties, much better than a knife and can do even more. And it's a tiny backup blade. If you carried one for a week or two I just about guarantee you'd see that it'd make your life much easier.

I've tried carrying various Leathermans/multi tools. I just don't like them in my pocket or hanging off me in a pouch. I keep a wave+ in my truck. I like it there. I prefer a single blade folding knife in my pocket 👍

Boxes, letters, food, gardening and cleaning my fingernails are usually my primary uses for a pocket knife. But, I'm definitely not afraid to go get a better tool when the job requires it (like a chisel or screwdriver, or dremel). Totally ok with light prying.

I never expected you to say anything about reaching for things in a car. There was one time when I dropped a card between two seats and I couldn't reach it with my hand, or my normal knife, but I happened to have a 5in blade knife with me and that was just barely able to reach it. Knives are really useful

I've carried a knife regularly since I was 10. I even carried them to school. I don't think I've ever had someone ask why I carry one haha. Maybe just because where I live it's pretty normal to have a knife on you. Forgot my knife at work one day and they asked me if I needed to back and get my dress...

I always try to carry 2 knives my folder and a small fixed blade. I’ll usually hand my fixed blade to just about anyone, but I’ll rarely hand over my folder because I’ve had a guy almost impale himself before 👀

How? Lol I do to but usually something like a umnumzaan, shaman, manix 2 or scarab/ultratech and somthing small like a qsp penguin, rat2 with them for that reason . I only have a Benchmade hidden canyon(which I really like it and i carry with the others mentioned in place of the rat2/penguin) and a crkt minimalist bowie. the sheath cracked. I can get it insanely sharp very fast but edge retention is almost laughable,not sure what steel but definitely not good. I had a super nice giant mouse gmf1 but lost it. Any recommendations on a good small fixed blade that won't break the bank? I got the hidden canyon kinda for that reason but it's just so nice I kinda wanna bang it up to bad. lol

@@Deadtileyedie okay so story time, I used to carry a buck 110 folder my grandfather gifted me. And after awhile I started to get into using stones to sharpen it, I kept it super sharp. One day a guy at work asked to use it, I said sure. This dude made a extra hole in his leather belt and barley put pressure on it and my knife went right through the belt. I normally rotate my crkt minimalists between my gmf1 but since I sent it to MC I’ve been missing it dearly

@@ChugChug3 DAAAMN lucky he didn't hurt himself! I have a buck 110 from my grandfather as well I used for hunting. I just recently replaced it with the microtech socom mini fixed(great knife but grip legth and blade are little on the larger side for edc, atleast for me) .So YOU have gmf1. That was my favorite "edc" fixed blade I ever had! Crazy slicey for the thickness and really comfortable to me. I unfortunately lost it on a fishing trip like a dummy. If you ever get a chance to check out the Benchmade hidden River do so. I really like it. I actually don't mind the steel on the crkt minimalist and actually like it alot but the damn sheath broke. I could maybe find one online. Thanks for your contribution to the channel man! Be safe and take care!

In my line of work, I can't get through the day without a multitool. Doing things like cutting and stripping wire, tightening screws and very light prying with the screwdrivers. My colleagues never carry anything and strip wire with their teeth! When they need a screwdriver they try to use a car key. Just never understood how they can go through life without at least a multitool on them. When not at work in the field I carry a SAK in the office. When not at work I have a one hand opening folder on me for whatever random cutting duties are called upon it. Knives are just useful

I like how you danced around the self defense part lol. Only other reason I'd add is something to fidget with when your board!!! Very stupid but I do that alot 🤷♂️. Also, I work at an autoparts store and sometimes a set of break pads in a box is just a bit too far for me to reach and I dont wanna go hunting for a ladder that I dont wanna use anyway because I have bad knees so I take my knife out, and use the tip to get the box off the shelf........probably not the smartest way but I haven't cut myself yet🤣
@pete67052 жыл бұрын
Was wondering if you’d bring up the self defense. There’s an extremely low chance you’d ever have to use it, and if there’s a shady situation the best move is always to get away from it. But there is an added level of comfort knowing that you have something there in case some really crazy situation ever came up

I really have a hard time wanting to grab my more expensive pocket knives as an edc. Granted my most expensive is the para 3 which is weirdly right next to my main carry, the Rat 2 in D2, on the video. That also is a $40 knife, but I just love the stone washed look on the newer s45vn steel which is most certainly a superior steel. I should force myself to get out if that comfort zone and see if I’m just putting restrictions on myself for no reason.

@Kova15 When I was a kid my mom would collect China and never use the “fancy plates” unless guests came over. Problem was when guest did come over she never pulled them out. Unless you’re a collector that plans to resell your knives, I would use ‘em. Premium steels are meant to be used and yes even beat on, that’s why they’re premium in the first place. You only live once man, enjoy them!
@metal_complex Жыл бұрын
"enjoy" is subjective. If you get joy from not using them, then dont use them. Do whatever you want to do with your knives. They're yours. No one else paid for them.
