I. AM. FLOORED. This band is fucking incredible. This entire album is gold, but this song is something special. This song has the perfect blend of everything that makes The Ocean amazing. 2:45 holy mother of god that bass line. Then Loic starts singing the most beautiful melody I've ever heard. Pure bliss. Then the strings and guitars come in. This is the most awe-inspiring piece of music I've ever heard! 4:14 = my jaw hitting the floor for the remainder of the track. Thank you The Ocean for making this masterpiece.

My favorite verse in this song has to be the "Eyes on the water Between the continents, This is Gondwana, It smells so different, A cold wind blows out here, The seas already dead, Let's get in the water Let our bodies be the last." As a paleontology nerd who's been online just studying the Mass extinction. This line really became my favorite of it all due to the sea basically dying quickly. 96% of ALL marine life died.

Eyes on the water between the continents, This is Laurasia, it smells so different, A strong breeze blows out here, The ocean is pitch black, Let's not seek shelter, I wanna freeze and smell your neck. Soon everyone of us will be dead, In the great scheme of things it makes no difference, It's all the same, But let's not get sentimental… Eyes on the water between the continents, This is Gondwana, it smells so different, A cold wind blows out here, The sea's already dead, Let's get in the water, let our bodies be the last. Feel the cold, Feel the night creep up to me, Let's stop and wait until we freeze together, And rest like this forever, Creep inside my bones where you have lied since the day that we were born, Since the day we were born. Sea level rise: we'll be among those 5%, We'll survive the Great Dying, there is no denying, You and me, the chosen few… because that's how we've got to know, And that's all we gotta know. I am not here but you can still write me, like in the beginning, You're no longer next to me, but this is how it's always been: you were a ghost before you became real, That's how we got to know, That's how we got to know. Now that are not here, now that we no longer talk, I can't stop to remember how you've been offended when you realized that I'd kill to relieve a load, Yes I'd kill to relieve a burden. Feel the cold creep inside, I am losing you to your fears, grown way out of scale, Yes it's true what they say: I don't love humanity, not a bit, But I do value empathy while retaliating iniquities. Sea level rise: it's the beginning of the Great Dying, Soon it will be over, Long time to recover: 30 million years, Yes I'd kill to relieve the load, Yes I'd kill to relieve a burden. I am not here but you can still write me, like in the beginning, You're no longer next to me, but this is how it's always been: you were a ghost before you became real, That's how we got to know, That's how we got to know. Contemplating, trouble making, even now… the air is getting hot and dry, Sticking to your skin and your open wounds, The sun burns us alive, That's how we got to know, That's how we got to know, That's how we got to know.

Thank you! Have you got an idea what it's about? It's obviously speaking about the great permian exctinction, but I feel like there's a twist, like it's a character trying to explain something at the same time. They should be playing stadiums like Metallica, but I got blown to bits with the full PELAGIAL experience at my local with the whole band just an arms length away from me. It was some kind of recurrent religious event that gives me goosebumps every time I play that album. I really hope they come to my town again with this album and play at the same joint. An absolute privilege and an honour. But for the band's sake I would really like this album to be the one that shoots them into the stratosphere. They deserve a much wider audience.

@@Herpusderpus yes billions. and yes the song implies life on earth will take 30 million to recover. the sun is about halfway through its life in terms of hydrogen fuel, so it'll destroy our planet in about 5 billion years. i agree - think it's safe to assume humans won't be around in any recognisable form by then.

I feel like it is the Earth, the planet itself, talking to humanity in the lyrics. In the first lines it is taking humanity by the hand and showing it around. Showing it how the landscape is changing in the moments of the Great Dying. Then, Earth explains the situation to humanity. That the latter will die in a while and that it would kill it to relieve itself of the burden it is

Amazing behemoth of a song. There's something about the clean vocals on the line "eyes on the water between the continents" that makes it sound like a warning, and I love it. While I do like the instrumental songs of this band (especially the whole of Pelagial instrumental version) I think the vocals and lyrics definitely makes the difference for me with this band. This album and its sequel are the continuation of the concept they began ten years ago, on the their third record "Precambrian". I recommend giving that one a listen, and just dive in to their discog as a whole as well. Robin Staps, the lead guitarist, is one of the most criminally underrated geniuses in Metal.... the scope and depth of the ideas and textures he weaves into the band's music is unbelievable! They only release their records in companion sets, and The Phanerozoic Duology ties in to Precambrian and Pelagial. This band never does anything small.
