I'm actually a geologist and, when I heard 12 years ago about an album called Precambrian from a band allegedly called The Ocean Collective, I was almost forced to dig into it. And what a band it was! They grow in every album, and with Phanerozoic I & II they close a circle for me and I see myself, again, 12 years ago digging again in a geology-themed metal album. Days will be long since september 25th.

Facts! I cannot wait for this to come out. Oh and check out Thecodontion then! They're a double bass, guitarless death metal band from Italy and their debut is called Supercontinent. Not sure how you are with death metal but you will dig the lyrics and themes they deal with!

I discovered The Ocean in 2019, pretty much by chance. I was channel-surfing through rock channels on Music Choice when I stumbled upon the Metal channel, where "Permian: The Great Dying" was playing. Since I’m a bit of a science nerd, the title naturally caught my attention, and within days I was obsessed with Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic. And now Phanerozoic II is on the horizon. Words cannot describe how excited I am right now.

It was our own hubris that took us down. Not a meteor or an asteroid. This was our fault. Those of us who knew the dangers are powerless to stop it...and many cheer on their own demise without even realizing it. Those who rule us think they can survive an apocalypse. They'll only be eaten alive by the survivors of what little remains as our once great species leaves this earth out on a whimper. So much potential. Be better than us.

what the ocean does soundwise and musically is absolutely outstanding. even on youtube...the sound is killer. i have every single lp from the ocean...listening on high-end denon its amazing. not speaking about songwriting (nascent, heliocentric ...best album in my opinion...wow)

Everyone talking about Tool similarities but I'm hearing more Mastodon. Either way, this is the most exciting teaser/release I've heard in recent years (and yes, that includes Tool 2019)

I grew up in the 90s with Tool. And Tool repeat themselves. The Ocean are evolving with every record. The only similarity I see is that you can't spot both vocalists on stage because they hide in the dark 😅.

quietriot Even if Tool doesn’t have the sonic diversity that some prog bands have, the wealth and density of their songs far outshines almost everyone in the genre. They have their sound, and they’re out to perfect that sound, rather than trying to create a wide range of sonic diversity. Two completely different approaches to the genre, and I’m not discounting either.

I hear Mastodon influence on many of their songs but here it is a clear as hell Tool influence.

@@GrapeFlavoredAntifreeze Agree, Im not discounting Tool. It still is definitely in the top 3 bands of all time for me. But for me Aenima was the golden age of Tool. Lateralus and 10,000 days had some masterpieces as well. But I just felt the new album fell a little short for me personally (although it was logical progression for the band). This Ocean track is how I wish Tool would have progressed (maybe if Maynard's voice wasn't shot)

The beginning reminds me Textures... and I wish we could hear some new stuff from them. But hey, this song is still original and so good
