Hey guys, hoping to give some context to why the build-up is so long in this track. Basically, these riffs and sound effects compile into segments of music that scores the entire game, each level has a theme with sub-sections that inform Mick on what type of effects or guitars he needs for each section. The game splits the combat music from the ambiance and the puzzle/exploration music, this means that each subsection of a track needs to be diverse, but also flexible to mix and match with different scenarios. First wave combat music is heavier than exploration music, but not too heavy. Final wave combat music is crazy intense , but needs to progress naturally from ambience/first wave combat music. These small cut up parts are then collected and mixed together to form more coherent tracks that culminate in the OST, but it's clear to anyone that their primary function is not to be single tracks on an album. Mick has an incredible presentation at GDC that you can watch on KZbin, explaining this process.

It's similar to what he did for Killer Instinct, where the music is cut up to fit what's going on in the match, you got the intro piece that plays for both characters, the main part during the whole match with an addition when someone loses their first health bar, an intense part when someone does a huge combo, the relaxed part when both fighters are stationary (usually has an easter egg to a character's old theme unless they're new then they have the KI theme) little interruption parts that sound corrupted when a combo breaker is done, the part where someone's close to danger and losing, the ending part for when the fight ends and the mickey mousing piece for when a character does an Ultra Combo

The Doom soundtrack is interesting because every song is designed with looooonggg build ups to drops. The reason is that each part of the song is designed to be looped indefinitely, as the intensity of the music matches the intensity of the gameplay. Quiet when not much is happening, building up tension when action is near, with drops for fighting waves of enemies. When you listen to the song in-game you never hear it exactly the way it is in the OST, because it's very dynamic and dependent on what you as the player do - which is one of the coolest parts of the soundtrack.

I remember the first time I heard this, fam I dropped everything i was doing and I am not a hardcore rock fan , but this SHIT WAS LIT!!!

The first time I noticed it I was running away from the demons tryna find some cover..when the WEERRR WEERRR WERRR WERRRR WEERRRR bit came on though in all of it's higher pitched glory...I knew I had to begin ripping and tearing instead! And then I died... but knowing that track was playing in the background the SECOND TIME AROUND! It gave me that good shit to get through. Also made it easier to accept the deaths.

This is why I love Mick Gordon's music. It pulls no punches, just goes hard. I recommend doing Cultist Base, because as far as I'm aware, there's no guitar, it's literally just a synthesized chainsaw.

And as cool as BFG division is I still think Mick Gordon's best work in Doom 2016 was Harbinger, SkullHacker and Hellwalker Truly masterful work he made

The ID Software first brief that was sent to Mick was "no guitar". Just saying, imagine the entire soundtrack without that F.ing 9 strings.

Mick is SUCH a talented composer! He is also very particular about the sound - which actually caused some issues with production on the DOOM Eternal soundtrack.

Really recommend you guys check out Gladiator from Doom Eternal. Mick goes in to using a whole heavy metal choir for it while also staying true to the whole shin-dig he’s doing with the tracks y’all have been listening to.

I second this, Gladiator goes extremely hard and is my favorite track from DOOM Eternal

The thing with the repeating riffs is that the game has phrases of music stored to react to what the player is doing to provide a natural soundtrack, and these are compositions of those phrases.

the song is crazy but his approach to diversifying the main rif entrance to match with the action pace of the game is just godlike music score creation
