Great review, Merrill. I own the Deus 2. I am deeply satisfied with it. My proof of it's performance is in all the silver I am pulling out of fields that have been hit hard with a Nox 800 and a Deus 1 for the last 18 months. These fields have been gridded multiple times and in different directions and are full of iron nails. The Deus 2 is still pulling coins out at depth. The Nox is a very, very good machine but unfortunately, my bum shoulder was the reason I went with the XP. Pricey? Yes, but shoulder surgery would be pricier if I continued to aggravate it with a heavy machine like the Nox. Everyone has their own checklist when it comes to purchasing merchandise. The Deus 2 price point is tough to swallow, but it checked almost all the boxes for me. And it will continue to get better as XP fine tunes things.

It might have. But this is about relativity. How good was the response of the Garrett AT-Pro compared with the field. I am rooting for Garrett. Competition is a good thing. But the truth is that right now you are at a disadvantage with an AT-pro. It’s true that familiarity and experience with the machine is one of the most important factors but I would argue that ceiling is also. That machines ceiling is clearly lower than others tested here.

You raised the real question about value for money relating to detectors. I would raise another issue and that is build quality, especially relating to the nox. When you consider the cost of these units, you would expect the coil attachment point, the arm cuff and shift lock mechanism to be solid and robust. I see so many detectorists having to buy after market parts to reinforce minelad's design or replacing parts from other brands, simply because the nox appears to have some build design faults. This is not a rant against minelab as I have all minelab products, but the newer stuff appears to have dropped in but quality.......Your thoughts?
@KenLord2 жыл бұрын
I don't have a nox, but it sure seems common among the nox youtubers for the battery / charging system to go wonky. As a Garrett user, it's all about the cracked coils. gotta be so careful around rocks. And a cracked coil can potentially fry the electronics... But they do have great customer service, they fixed my AT Max when I went through this, replacing the coil and board for free, despite it being a couple months past warranty.

Very interesting test. As a metal detecting hobby goes for me, this test confirms what an outstanding value the Simplex represents. I'm impressed by what I've been seeing with the new Legend but, does it merit an extra $400? For my purposes it's a no. Then, considering that the Deus and Equinox are just out of the question. Again, for me this is just a hobby, I'm not looking to make money or create a new profession. This is kind of like comparing a $10 hammer to a $100 hammer.

That said, I bought the Deus II and am finding silver coins (wheaties too) in places I have hunted before. The Deus II is great. I am 76 years old, so I don't have much metal detecting time left and I need to have the detector that will give me the best chance to reach my goal. I just hunt nickels, copper pennies, dimes, and quarters. Today I got three silver coins in parkways I've hunted before with my old detectors. Yesterday I got five silvers, four dimes and one quarter and eight wheat pennies, all in a park I've hunted before.

@MrBottlecapBill2 жыл бұрын
Only one comment I have really. Great job by the way. I do notice the machines with slower recovery(older in most cases) are not doing as good in this test. Hitting but not great. One mistake people often make is thinking lower reactivity is better for depth, and it is but ONLY in clean ground. Meaning no other targets within the coil width. This is pretty dirty ground so a lower recovery speed may not always be better. Targets may bleed into each other during your swing, as in before one target sounds off you're hitting the next which can corrupt the tones. I know the Legend may have been set too low for those conditions, the NOX I'm not sure about. The vanquish doesn't have recovery but it does have adjustable iron bias which may have helped it out. The D1 was sketchy with iron buzz but I don't know a lot about them and the D2 sounded bad up close and amazing far away which was weird. The older minelabs were mostly disappointing but I don't know much about those either. Now the problem with everything I said above is......while I'm sure some machines can be tuned in to hit a KNOWN target.......how will they fair if you just turn them on in a strange location with unknown targets in the ground? That's why I prefer most machines be tested in the stock modes first and then adjusted afterward. That way newbies know what they're getting and experienced hobbyists know what they're getting. Either way this was a great test.

@MD-NWWI2 жыл бұрын
The Deus 2 likes to be swung a little faster than one might expect. One thing I would also recommend is run in 5 tones keep your discrimination no higher than 6. I do 5.5 and it's an animal in iron. You can always adjust your lower tone break to 20 or 30 and set the frequency down to 100. It really makes a difference in iron infested areas. Another option for iron infested areas is to use relic program and set the IAR to 5. This will give a clear iron tone for the iron and a good pitch tone for the rest. Note this does not work well in non-ferrous trashy areas. Best for areas like your garden where it's mostly iron junk

good video as a amateur metal detector I only have a couple of machines but I noticed that on one of the machines you used the setting was not optimized and on other you set them up better to succeed. The AT Pro for one can be set to eliminate the iron completely, I use this machine on very iron filled parks in Texas and if I am just looking for silver I have great success at up to 12 inches. Thanks for the demo though
@MetalDetectingNYC2 жыл бұрын
There is a way to turn the iron audio off or notch it out on the AT Pro but it doesn’t get rid of the effects of iron . Soil affects depth but the AT pro will not come close to 12 inches on a dime sized target on an air test. I say this respectfully. Did you check the soil to get a baseline before you covered the coin ?

would the at gold perform even slightly better than the at pro he used in the test?

Very nice test have you ever tried the Rutis Alter 71? I heard they were very deep detectors so I bought one with extra coils but have yet to even take it out of the box, busy with other projects.

Um, but why shouldn't apex have a 28cm coil like anfibio or deus?
@MetalDetectingNYC2 жыл бұрын
We went with the coils that were standard while purchasing the detector. I realize that coil size affects depth but I didn’t want to invest another penny in the Apex. I had some great days at the beach with it but it is fundamentally flawed on land. The separation is inferior to its peers and iron overwhelms the machine more than it’s peers. Me too. That is Garrett’s best machine I sense but I’ve never used one. I know people who won’t give it up.

I recently bought a vanquish 440 and I MD a plantation home close by. But the vanquish has problems with the old nails in the ground. Their are lots of them. They read the same as a penny. 19-20. Would the legend be a better detector for this place? I’m thinking on getting another one, what one would you recommend? The legend or the equinox?

What is your website? I'm looking for a detector for Illinois black dirt. Looking for silver coins n rings mainly. My last detector I bought in 1986. A Whites Di Pro 6000. Heavy ole thing.

What can you tell me about the garrett axiom. Which monelab would you compare it to. I've had the sd2300, gm1000, gpx5000, equinox 800, obviously it's a PI so I can only compare it to the sdc2300 so fat the axiom punches deeper and is better with hotrocks. I've heard it's up there with the gpx6000. How you can help with any input. I just bought the axiom Saturday

I have kind of a dumb question. I am not a 100% novice because many years ago I got a used Radio Shack and played with it enough to know while it is not a good detector it will work in limited ways. But now I am retired and going to travel in a converted bus and want to get a GOOD detector. Yes, I will stay with it as a hobby as long as I am able. So A more expensive machine could be acceptable. What would you advise? MY qualifications are 1) as waterproof as possible, I was born and raised in Fla soI will be beaching it or maybe into the water 10 to 15 ft, 2) all metal capable, On beaches would be looking for gold and silver but in ghost towns in the desert would be looking for all metals. So, with maybe as much as $2000 could be budgeted but cheaper would be good, LOL I know you dont push one detector over others because it puts money in your pocket. Interested in YOUR OPINION.

I became XP’s ambassador for a reason. I have owned 23 detectors. Do you think I would want to compromise my Detecting and take something substandard? To me the best metal detector on the market is the XP Deus 2. I put it as the highest capability rating on my website long before becoming ambassador. Dad is my honest advice.

I thought that was interesting , but what frequency was you using on the machines ? That could make a difference in any machine.
