Opeth's Fredrik Åkesson absolutely slays this track. Tobias asks him to "scale it down", but seems to let him soar on this track. It gets me fired up every time I listen to it. I even find my 9-year-old rocking to it when she doesn't see me. How the fuck does Tobias keep doing this? Seriously? I've been listening since 2014 and he keeps getting better.

The fadeout is part of the song's message! It shows how the futile search for divinity or the absolute using modern technology goes on and o and on with no end in sight!

Great point about how Ghost puts so much care/effort into their art - every aspect shows this. Songs, albums, art, stage show, merch, etc.. The last three albums have all been mixed by Andy Wallace - who is a legend (SOAD, Avenged Sevenfold, Linkin Park, etc..). Tobias has said that while he loves guitar, he doesn't play it much - except for writing/recording. He's the singer/frontman/mastermind, and leaves the guitar playing to the Ghouls on tour. He felt for Impera that after completing the Impera demos, he'd ask his good friend Fredrik (who practices 5 hrs/day) to play, and ended up having him record all the guitar tracks - under Tobias's direction.

As i said in an earlier post. Impera is the first album with double bass drums. The whole set is much bigger. New drummer as well. Richard Huxflux Nettermalm. It's the same producer as one Meliora. The long fadeout is intentional and symbolizes the eternal search for a savior. The watcher in the sky. One thing you need to know is that Tobias writes the albums with vinyl in mind. That's why this is the last song of sida a and a instrumental opens up side b as track 7.

One of the coolest things about Ghost, and especially Impera, is the way the album is constructed around the vinyl experience. I absolutely love that the end of side A fades out, and the beginning of side B changes it up and leads into Twenties. And the fact that the end of side B comes full circle to finish as side A began is just brilliant.
@ddavis538
@ddavis538 Жыл бұрын
During the fade out, the thing you're hearing in the background sounds like a guitar using a whammy bar, but moved back in the mix like you can see the guy playing way off in the distance if that makes sense. Speaking of the fade out, it actually doesn't bleed into the next track - this is the last track on Side A, so the next track is actually bringing a whole different sound. That said, he put a LOT of thought into Side B - it is a fantastic "fall" to the thematic empire. Dominion is a lead-in to Twenties, so another pair that should be listened to together. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Twenties - it has some unique elements (especially the rhythm).

Indeed, at least inside the fan base, Ghost doesn't have the typical A side, B side, C side songs. They're all protagonists. Of course each one has their favorites and some they don't like that much, but even those they know well, very well. Every single song has a weight and it just feels weird and wrong to cast them aside to a "secondary" category in favor of other songs. Of course, to the open public, there is the pack of songs that they would probably mention if someone talks about Ghost. 'Ritual', 'Year Zero', 'Square Hammer' and 'Mary on a Cross'. But once you dive in a little bit and get to know more, listen more... you start to realize they all have their places and there's no better or worse.. there's just... difference.

And please please at some point check out How Ghost Writes A Song by the former Gear Gods channel. As a musician who's said what you've said about their music I think youll absolutely love it. It's like Galaxy Quest, yeah they're making fun somewhat, but it's out of love. And the song at the end is actually pretty good and lots of people think Tobias should actually do it. Doesn't have to be for a reaction, but yeah, you'll definitely appreciate it. It came out not long after Hunter's Moon dropped.

Impera is Ghost's "black album" in that it's their 5th full studio album & best mixed/mastered (also their most successful, so far). Anyway, I genuinely can't predict whether you will love or hate Twenties. I couldn't anticipate your goofy reaction to the brilliant Kaisarion... so... shrug?

Tobias brought a little more technicality from his previous band Repugnant on this album, and that's why you're noticing more drum fills and guitar riffs/solos on this. If you haven't listened to Repugnant, check out this live video of them and watch Tobias shred on a guitar and vocals. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZ3HeJeHl7itpac

This is not a complaint, but a comment on my observations on songs on this album. I find there is a lot of corus repetition. I found songs in the 80's did this a lot as well. definitely something new that Ghost did with this album.

Excellent, my favorite DSAC is back at it again (need to use the acronym so as to avoid being auto-flagged, although that acronym looks a little sus too, hmmm....) I never realized until just now how much that artwork really reminds me of Iron Maiden's Eddie. Glad you enjoyed this one though. Feel like I often see people find this to be a weaker one, but I love it. As I've seen someone else already remark, I'll be very curious to see how you take Twenties. Feel like the only options are least or most favorite haha. For me it took me a few listens to adjust to it, and now its probably my personal favorite on the album, so it was definitely one of those that took a little time to grow on me.

It does if you think about the message of the song, as others have pointed out. The neverending search for a savior aka the watcher in the sky. Even without thinking about that, personally I think the harmonized guitar fadeout is pretty cool. Maybe it could be a bit shorter but overall great song

Next up is Twenties. It's a bit of a love/loathe situation (or was at first, I think people have mellowed a bit). It's still very polarising though. Personally, I really dislike it and I find it very repetitive. It's the one Ghost song I'll happily skip. Many others love it though.
