They did an early and late show at Red Rocks on the same day and debuted the full Petro Dragonic Apocalypse album for those that stayed to party in between. Epic

I will admit, these guys are so talented that their live performances are so often better than the studio versions. I'm pretty sure a lot of it comes down to the band "maturing" a song by adding, removing, tweaking parts and the way they play it for every show. They write and record these albums so damn fast that sometimes songs don't have enough time to simmer and grow ripe. That process tends to happen on the road during tours. And Magma is one of those songs.
@sononekoh
@sononekoh Жыл бұрын
This also follows a theme of infusing the song with that Rats nest and Petro energy on that tour. Reminds me of the (evil) river.

Stu has said a couple of times in interviews that they spend around 2 years working on each album. But yeah, l think they give themselves some space on their studio recordings to liven up the songs during show performances.

With Ice Death that really comes to a head when you consider the entire process of recording the album was much the same as their live shows. Noodling, jamming and just messing around until everything gets to a point where it feels complete, they lay down a recording of one of those performances, and then when touring the album they just continue evolving past that point too. I honestly dont think i'd actually like to see it, but I think Ice Death would be a fascinating album to just hear totally re-recorded in the studio one day just to see how the songs have finally transformed.

@@marcusfoley3347 Yeah this is true. A lot of their songs that came out in 2022 and 2023 (so far) emerged from really old demos. A personal fav for me is how The Dripping Tap had its origins in a jam-session with the band Tropical Fuck Storm that was recorded during the sessions for Fishing for Fishies, but ultimately got scrapped. Eventually TFS released their version of the song based on those original sessions (Satanic Slumber Party) and we finally got a re-recorded version called The Dripping Tap which was the first thing the band recorded with every single member present since the covid lockdowns ended in Australia. Might be mistaken, but I think The Dripping Tap was also the first song to feature *every* member on a recording too. Usually the bass is laid down by stu or joey, and often Cook's guitar parts are laid down by Joey in the studio. The history of their music is fascinating and I cant believe it only really goes back 11 years.

I wish I had gotten tickets to this show, because it seems like it was killer. I did at least see the night show later that evening. Even with a lightning delay it was one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen!

when you said about "petrodragonic" style singing, Stu always liked doing this sorta mongolian throat singing live, specially after the "Infest the Rats Nest" tour, but also in fewer in some studio albums, like in the ending of the "Lightning vs Balrog" story of MOTU, but also in "The Book" in Sketches of Brunswick East (their jazz album)

I absolutely LOVE the use of it on Rattlesnake. It almost makes it sound like theres a vocoded underlayer to the song but it really is just weird throat techniques.

Don't miss out on the studioversion! The live performance is great but the studioversion is very considerate with all its attention to detail. It has a lot of parts that make me love it that no live version has been able to replicate yet, live is where they seem to remember a few parts and in between is a lot of jamming (even though it's cool that that makes every live version somewhat unique and has a different energy to it).

funny for you to mention the holy explorer there, cause it was Stu's guitar before it was damaged in tour. after that he bought a reverse flying V, and Joey had a regular flying V so it looked pretty funny but authentic, now reverse one migrated to Cookie and Stu rocks with the holy explorer again. My favorite piece of KGLW gear is flying microtonal banana, you're yet to see it but it looks awesome, it was made exclusively for their microtonal records. they are fond of using vintage 70s guitars, like that 12string hagstorm from murder of the universe or the yamaha SG-2a from this album and fishing for fishies, i think a 12 string gibson SG appeared there too at some point. yeah, Cookie and Lucas really dont get enough attention, sometimes its the case for Ambrose too. Here's a suggestion for you to react, I really like this band called acid bath, they're a sludge stoner doom, abit punkish band from 90s, thou they only have released only 2 albums due to loss of their former member they're pretty dope, they're not as progish as I think you would like, but maybe you will enjoy it, they never got big due to their explicit lyrics and themes. I think you should start with the first album cause it feels more energetic, powerful and more "alive" in my opinion. if you get to react to these guys I suggest the first album but I am not sure if its entirely on yt

I did read somewhere that the Flying A (as it was called) originally belonged to Cook in the first place. Kinda tracks when you see how many of his guitars over the years are just very weird shapes aha

Never heard that version before, and although it starts a little chaotic, the finale's intensity is pretty spectacular. The studio or KEXP versions are more of a constant crescendo to the finale, and the guitar work is a bit more "organized". Listen to the KEXP version, it's really close to the studio version, and it's live...

I'd argue Cavs is the MVP of King Gizz in general, in the same way Neil Pert was the MVP of Rush and John Bonham was the MVP of Led Zeppelin.

Dang, wish you would have done the studio version first... They always kill it live but the effort put into mastering/mixing/production is lost and IMO it's a huge part of the album experience with these guys. Just compare to Crumbling Castle on the record to the KEXP version, even though both rule, alot of nuance is lost
