There is no pre-judging Ren's music, style, delivery, musicality, etc. He is simply amazing in every work he performs. Thank you, Nuclear Reactions for your awesome review.

Totally agree with you, I came here to say exactly the same thing 😉. If ever there was an artist about whom you definitely cannot say that (quoting NR loosely here) “after hearing one of their songs, you seem to know or expect what every other song of theirs is going to sound like”, I’d say imho that said artist would have to be Ren 😂. Even with a total opposite approach having the expectation to be surprised with every single work Ren I have discovered, the man still has managed to catch me fully off guard at several occasions and to blow my mind over and and over again in more unforeseen ways than any musician has done for me since the start of this century at least! I simply don’t have enough fingers to count the many different sides of Ren, there are just too many areas of undeniable excellence to this artist that appear to me to be so many levels above any of his contemporaries (story-writing & -telling, poetry & use of imagery in his lyrics, vocal skills, rap skills & delivery, superb inner sense of rhythm, acting &performance, innate musicality as a multi instrumentalist, diversity of song-topics ranging from immensely profound to just simply utterly fun, the emotional intelligence and social networking skills to enter into the best possible artistic collaborations for any of his projects - be it with other musicians/videographers/bandmembers, his musical production skills and basically that total artistic vision he seems to possess to envision where he wants to go with his stuff, not to forget that genre-bending of his & the way he displays his incredible soulfulness/blues/rock/reggea/dance/whichever vibes in the covers he does, …). Anyway, I could go on and on here. Suffice to say that I totally second the previous comment (there really is NO pre-judging Ren’s art 🤔🤯✨👌😱)! And thank you Nuclear Reactions for your honest (love it when reactors actually dare to admit which parts of songs they personally don’t really like especially when they do it as respectfully as you did in this vid) and great reaction/review. Hope you decide to delve into the Ren rabbit hole a bit further in the near future (and perhaps might begin to understand why I felt the need to comment or mainly just totally gush over Ren’s versatility just now), looking forward to it… (metal people in general tend to have some affinity with classic hardrock so for you perhaps The Big Push covering Black Sabbath Warpigs might be a nice first stepping stone into discovering just how versatile this artist truly is. My personal favourites vary depending on days and moods, bit heavier than average right now so I’d recommend one of his 2 chinchilla collabs -choose live version- or any heavier recent rap-track such as Illest of our Time. Whichever way you choose to go though, prepare to be surprised 😂)

Great reaction! Much love! Ren is very versatile. Please next: Ren - The Tale of Jenny & Screech (Full) it's a trilogy and it's 13 min long. Look at his busking ( street performences): Ren & Sam Tompkins - Earned it /Mans World / Falling He is/was in a Band "The Big Push": The Big Push - War Pigs (Black Sabbath cover) The Big Push - Wade in the water / Nina simone / Trouble so hard .....

I’m chuckling while listening to you try to describe what Ren is doing here… thinking to myself - ‘oh, just wait’! If you choose to listen to more of Ren, you’ll quickly see that he has NO genre.. he’s a multi-instrumentalist; produces all of his own music/videos, with most being done in one take - all live. He raps, sings solo; duets with multiple other amazing singers; plays original and covers with his band, The Big Push. I think you’ll enjoy them all should you choose to head down the Ren Rabbit Hole!! I subscribed to ride along… and to see some of your other reactions as well. Please consider listening to The Tales of Jenny and Screech (full version) next, and/or some of his music with The Big Push!

Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Erin Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990; he eventually moved to Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, Ren began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue; subsequently, his contract with Sony was dissolved. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis and develop PTSD. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Calgary, Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023) undergoing IV and other interventions five days a week. Ren recently underwent wisdom tooth removal and cavitation surgery. In addition, his Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD), which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals as well as his bones/joints. Now, Ren is receiving additional treatments for this previously undiagnosed condition. Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, if you are a content creator, ask your audience to subscribe to Ren. Ren's YT channel has less than 1 million subscribers while his videos have garnered millions and millions of views. Listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to the world, and his work is important in these troubling times. Someone has finally created a Wikipedia page for Ren, so there is additional information available.

Every song is its own. If you're familiar with Orwell, especially Animal Farm and A Clockwork Orange, some of his videos make more sense. "Poverty of language" is the most beautiful way to say it! The Ren community is vast, diverse and it's kind of special. Enjoy the adRenture! 🎉 Definitely the Jenny/Screech/Violet's Take trilogy. 🤘

That was a live performance. All that back and forth character-switching and guitar playing was done in one take, as was the rest of the song, however towards the end there are some close-up shots that came from another take, but other than that... They only had time for four takes before they were kicked out of the building for being too noisy. This was filmed by Ren's friend Samuel Perry-Falvey. The next best thing is definitely The Tale of Jenny and Screech (Full). It was filmed live as well, as three separate songs over a few years, before being put together as one video. The last half is stunning. Ren's a true artist, the likes of which I've never seen.

Your comentary on mental health treatment is thoughtful. Ive been fortumate enough to be through treatment programs that encouraged learning coping skills to relate to own struggle. Also the groups i attended were never focused on fixing ourselves. It was more of a realization that you are not alone, and there are people who relate and care about what you are going through.. that alone is the biggest thing ive ever gotten out of treatment. 25:44

Fascinated by your commenting on the interest of a metalhead in Ren's work. I've noticed a lot of metalhead getting deeply engaged in following Ren. There are no genres that cover Ren, and no two songs alike. Each song is fresh. He is there to have a good time, or he's there to make you feel something deeply. Either way, it's difficult to resist him.

Ren is a genius. But for me, my favorite part of watching Hi Ren reaction videos boils down to one lyric. It's one that hit me like a ton of bricks. Rare to see someone that admits that they didn't fully connect to portions of the song but still is objective enough to understand the point of it. Usually you get a sense that someone might be playing it up for the views or event hating it to be a contrarian. But good job in just being honest and down to earth, artists like this dude deserve a try for at least being outside the box. Really appreciate the words about trying to overcome our own biases, because you're right. It's there whether we like it or not so let's try to understand ourselves better by going against them whenever we can.

I dig this reaction. Having been a metal head in my 20’s, it’s such a huge difference in sound/taste. Some who react to things out of their comfort zone never get past that. Thanks for the reaction bro but a metal fan saying Hi Ren is a little too 'chaotic" for your taste has got me thinking .. this is the biggest compliment I can give Ren... I'm 43 years old. I've got a long list of songs from all genres that have han and I thought would always have a place in my heart. All I've been listening to for the past 5 months is Ren over and over. On the odd occasion I hear one of my songs that I cherished pre Ren... It doesn't do it for me anymore 😢

Going off of your commentary, I am pretty sure you will enjoy and appreciate "The Tales of Jenni, Screech and Violet" It is all one story, done in three videos. Unique is a good way to describe Ren. As you continue down this rabbithole, you'll come to discover he doesn't HAVE a genre. I too am a total metal-head. I grew up on Maiden, Priest and Crue. Ren has found something. Every song is an adventure. May I politely suggest you consider The Tale of Jenny and Screech (full)? It's not up your usual alley, but it's 3 one-take live videos of an amazing story. "This caught me off guard in the best possible way" is the most amazing way to describe this. You sir, are a poet. Ren is in his own genre! I’m more rock, metal, indie etc but Ren has rapidly become one of my all time favourites! He is/was also in a band called The Big Push that did multi genres (reggae, rock, rap etc) and did a mash up of Black Sabbath’s War Pigs (which you need to also check out). He gets really deep with a lot of his songs but regarding his highly creative side I highly recommend checking out The Tales Of Jenny & Screech Full version (13 mins long)… it shows how meticulous to detail Ren is and showcases his storytelling talents… it’s 3 songs in one but all 3 “tales” are connected (which is why you need to do the “Full” version for the most impact! Like Hi Ren it’s shot live and a one take (but 3 separate songs)! 🤟

Ren can’t be put in a box. He is art. Everything he does seems different from anything he’s done before. His whole catalogue is worth a listen, including his work with The Big Push, who are all incredible musicians as well. The artists featured in all of his collabs are also worth checking out on their own, notably Chinchilla and Sam Tompkins. Ren’s tale of Jenny and Screech (Full) will introduce you to his Bardcore side. Shakespeare with a modern twist.

A little something I've put together since I found Ren's music; part person who found hope again, part music lover, part bafflement at the sheer talent of Ren & Friends, so without further ado; Welcome to the RENaissance For Bardcore - check out the 3 part Tale of Jenny & Screech If you want to dive more into the rap side of his catalogue, I'd start with "What You Want" which is a brilliant homage to the Beasties, followed with "Genesis" followed by "Sick Boy" followed by "Illest of Our Time" (this one goes after the previous one so you have some grasp of the meaning) and the trail goes from there For more rock oriented fare follow the breadcrumbs to The Big Push and dive in (I personally suggest Sweet Little Lady, Swan Song, Englishman in New York, ,'I Shot The Sherriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop', and the cherry on top (my new favorite in this category, others are welcome to disagree but they're wrong :) "Fire" Last but not least, don't be afraid to check down the alleys, Ren has built himself a circle of talented musician friends that will surprise you and make you glad you chose to look for hidden treasure (Hint: *Chinchilla, Eden Nash, Sam Tompkins, and so many more) (Also Humble w/ Eden Nash is just pure young punk/rude boy heaven) *Chinchilla: Take 1 part Christina, 1 part Jessie J, 1 part Rhianna, blend well and pour over your own unique style, served ice cold by the baddest bitch in town (See Fingers (Live), Little Girl Gone (the official video is just *fun*), Elements, One Time, and for fun Terms & Conditions which has an 80s Madonna vibe *Gorran: He's got a pretty amazing list of tunes but the LIVE version of "If' speaks to me *Romain: If you love good guitar, Romain is your guy, but if I had to pick ONE song.. it's him on a Piano - Love Without Feelings, and his newest Turn the Lights Down

He does quite a few one-take story telling videos. What I like about Ren, is if you watch some of the interviews he's done... He wants to bring forward the hard conversations we hate to have. He feels like we're hurting ourselves and won't survive forever if we keep going as we are... but we can't fix it without talking about it first. He was mis diagnosed for 7 years and is finally being treated for lymes disease. But he comments on reactor videos, he's doing interviews with YT reactors. He's a real human, and allows us to see his humanity along side his new found fame.

It's su funny that your first listen of Ren was his homage to the Beastie Boys, so I can understand having preconceived notions. Yes, Ren had(has) Lyme disease, but doctors told him for years that it was all in his head & put him on a ton of drugs that not only didn't treat or stop the progression of his autoimmune disease, but caused him to have psychosis (and now PTSD and brain damage). At different times, he was bedridden 23 hours a day, and developed severe allergies to all kinds of things, especially food. I was going to recommend you listen to the full version of the Tales of Jenny and Screech (a bundled trilogy), but based on your analysis at the end I'd be curious to see you listen to Sick Boi. Lately he's been releasing videos for a rap album, but he definitely moves in different lanes. You get to hear his singing vocals more in Chalk Outlines, Humble or Ocean. If you like symbolism, definitely try Animal Flow - a very frenetic one-take video. Crazy. He's just mad talented. He spent *a lot* of time reading, writing, making beats and playing instruments while chronically ill. Add in his creative intelligence, and he’s got an interesting discography. You were on point when you thought that he not only pushes boundaries, but dwells in those pockets. For example, any Ren song labeled retake means he has challenged himself to create a new song over someone else's track (otherwise he does everything himself). I liked your reaction and willingness to try a 2nd song, so I sub'd. I hope you check out more Ren, even if it doesn't go on your playlist.

Check out the clip from when he was still misdiagnosed and thought he would die of the illness! Absolutely heart-breaking!!! And it explain a lot when it comes to this song! I also think you will like Ren, "Chalk Outline".

Ren in a interview stated quite a few telling things about himself and music in that he doesn't like to put in a box and going so far as to say but him in one and he'll go off in another music direction so he'll sing rap screech even hinted at he'd do metal. But he also stated he has cravings come music and if no one fills that void for his music then he will fill it himself. He's written lot's of music performed lot's of various genre's of music his breadth and range of music is wild and what he does in it is intentional.

Great reaction! I think you and Ren would have a bit in common and would probably get along like a house on fire. I hope you meet him one day. I think something good would come from it. Cheers from Downunder.

Ren songs for a Metalhead: WAR PIGS cover with The Big Push; CRUCIFY YOUR CULTURE; CRUTCH. And in terms of theme rather than music, DEPRESSION; DEAR GOD; INSOMNIA and THE TALES OF JENNY AND SCREECH (FULL). Loved your reaction to this!

Ren's genre is Bards punk/Bard rap/bard rock. In an interview he said he combines classical and fantasy music with lyrical stories. He is absolutely brilliant. In my opinion. He is the Shakespeare of our time....

Yay you found Ren. I have enjoyed your reactions before. Ren is a generational talent. He will surprise you! Btw if you wondered Ren is Agnostic, but during the excruciating pain he endured for years with his illness, it felt very Evil.

Enjoyed your reaction and analysis. Another reactor, Black Pegasus, referred to Ren as The Last Genre Bender, which fits pretty well. The Tale of Jenny and Screech (Full Version) shows off his amazing "bard-core" capabilities and explores a wide variety of styles, guitar playing skills, singing and rap, all in the service of telling a great, mind-bending story.

If you do a deep dive into Ren's music you'll find that expectations are off the board lol. Expect the unexpected. As far as genres go I would call his music the genre of Ren. You might enjoy 'The Tale of Jenny and Screech (full) version. He can be compared to a modern day bard as his storytelling ability is exquisite. Do the deep dive and you'll be glad you did. Great reaction!

This particular performance genre is called Bardcore here in the UK. From what i can gather, it's only a genre here too, as reactions from those across the globe have never heard of Bardcore before. I have to be honest here... It is also a fairly new genre to me, too, although im a brit.

Bardcore is usually medieval music versions of pop songs. (Stantough on KZbin has a load.) But people use it for Ren because of the bardic way he tells stories. But generally if you look at bardcore playlists and albums it will be nothing like Ren, so he is sort of evolving the genre, or carving or a new part of it.

@@MissMeKate Ahhhh, I see, Ren himself has depicted 'Hi Ren' and the amazing 'Tales trilogy' as Bardcore, that is actually how I became aware of the genre. I did research it a little, but it was definitely not enough. Thank you 😊 It is so fitting all the same! He is definitely a modern Bard.

The shadow concept developed by Jung influences this video by Ren. REN’s dad was a mental practitioner. Check out the use of shadows and lights. The reprise represents the integration of the the two personality traits

Very late reply.. Fellow metalhead here, but I've been mainly listening to this dude for about month now. Apart from the musical and performance genius. His ability to touch on darker subjects, be very personal and have a very insightful emotionally connected expression of his artistry is what really fascinates me as a metalhead. Hell... I might be on a different side of the spiritual spectrum However this song, for instance, has a very profound message I can really relate to even as a Luciferian.

To get a taste of another genre Ren excels in... check out his collaborations with Chinchilla: Chalk Outlines ... and How To Be Me. Plus... a must... is the Full Trilogy of the Tale of Jenny and Screech to experience Ren's Bardcore. Follow that up with The Hunger, Animal Flow [video AND the live version... they are different]... & then you'll still just have a glimpse into the genre-bending, creative genius that is Ren. Note... Sick Boi is another autobiographical piece that will help you see Ren. His busking videos with The Big Push might be more your cup of tea... especially War Pigs. Your commentary is equally compelling, btw. I do hope you'll continue your exploration of Ren.

This was also performed live and is a one shot video which took 4 takes. With Ren he's a performer first and foremost and a musician, actor, rapper, pianist, guitarist, busker, spoke word performer.....so far I haven't found anything he can't do! And of course due to his illness, he had a LOT of time and he is self taught and therefore doesn't really follow the established "rules" that is what makes him so very different

thanks to Jens Randolff ( comments below ) for the Ren bio: Ren is still in treatment ( maybe for the rest of his life ) and has a GoFundMe account to help pay staggering medical bills.....my thoughts are ------ the Pig is a butcher, Ren's opinion of many doctors and therapists.......the discordant vocals and guitar are symbolic of his internal chaos, as are the blinking lights....."Truth in a blender, Deceitful Pretender"......
