The text of this song is actually full of puns/word games. That's why the literal English translation sounds strange and you thought it was a different song. Bersani wrote this song some years after he broke up with his girlfriend. He previously wrote another song "Canzone" (which means "Song") to be sang by Lucio Dalla and dedicated it to the same ex-girlfriend. Both of the songs talk about the break up but in very different ways. Canzone is a malincolic one "Oh Song, find her if you like and tell her that I love her, tell her that she shouldn't ever break up with me", while Giudizi Universali has a more angry and deluded feeling "there have been intense moments but I've already forgot them" and "I don't know you and, deep down, you don't think anything that you say. You're just a copy of a thousand recaps"

Italian music has been the third most exported product from the 60'es to the 90es. The fact that it is no longer popular as before is due to the fact that there are only three music majors now and their industrial mafia mostly promotes anglo/american music and rarely latin music (who are strong because the 22 latin countries are backed by the strong mexican music industry).
