You came close to the point a few times but missed it. As a veteran this is how I translate the song. The people that start the wars aren't the people that fight them. And those of us that gave our lives were sold the lie that we were fighting for freedom even though at the end of the day the real purpose of these wars was keeping the rich rich. "And I fought with courage to preserve, not my way of life but yours" as a poor man that joined the army, I don't benefit from this war. You "the rich and the politicians" do "in return I gave my life, what purpose does this serve" I died, and for no real reason. It's not an important fight, we're not freeing and liberating anyone. It's for profit.

When they talk about giving their life to preserve someone elses way of life, I think it connects more with what you later say about how so many veterans end up being homeless. Those who decide about wars and those who are sending soldiers to die are often wealthy people that know nothing about the difficulties of being a solider, let alone those of being a veteran. Ps. Keep listening to Rise Against, they have some pretty good songs. Some really political, some others more emotional

Not really... It's not like The Offspring was the head band of the new Punk wave. Every band wishes to come out with an album like Smash. I love both band very much. Just not the same bands.

No. Offspring is cool. This band is way above them - offspring is nothing on this. You have to know the band and there message. Watch Five Finger Death Punch: Wrong Side of Heaven. No: it's a debate of theology. Is it better to die on your knees. Is it better for you die for your belief on your knees or willingness to be persecuted by your own people or "ISIS, Osama bin laden, Sudanm Hussein". Or die on your feet to fight these regimes on behalf of others who have no rights or power, and thus to die fighting for those who can't. How did you miss the entire point of the song and tie it to the Offspring? Neither has the same message or even a similar message. Rise Against has a completely different mantra - which you would've understood if you did a bit of research... The least of which you should do if you propose to have a public channel intended to remark, comment, or otherwise provide opinion, remark, situation, or feedback based on research and constructive criticism around knowledge.

The genre that best describes Rise Against is pop/punk. Great song choice IMO, it's not one their mainstream hits but it's still among their bests. Rise Against are very punk in their lyrics often questioning authority and opposing war, violence and intolerance. I believe they are all vegan for animal cruelty reasons, they often reference eco-terorism in their songs to support this. They are an amazing band. Also I gotta say The Offspring are my #1 all time fav band. I would assume the similarities you are noticing are mostly the properties of punk music like the high tempo back beat snare and rebelious lyrics.

I kinda see where you're coming from, but I see FOB and Panic! as pop punk. If I had to categorize Rise Against, they sit more on the punk edge, but maybe a little harder than that.

@@soccerwizard975 The genres certainly get blurred. I grew up with groups like blink 182 and sum 41 being categorized as pop/punk. Panic and FoB along with one of my favs MCR were constantly thrown into emo/screamo. Never understood why emo is considered a genre since ALL music genres have songs that connect on an emotional level. Used to call country "Farm Emo". For that matter I believe that Punk in general is a mentality more than a music style.

Rise Against are much closer to melodic hardcore than pop punk, at least in their older albums.

Yeah I don’t classify them as pop punk at all really. They’re definitely more melodic hardcore punk to me
