Tom Waits is a legend, a musical genius, in my opinion he’s one of the holy trinity of song writers along with Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave.

Not many lyricists require as much actual thought to truly enjoy as Tom Waits. I still remember the first time I listened to Nighthawks at the Diner and then sitting stunned when the album was over. My intro to him was a More Than Rain performance on Letterman a friend had on an old VHS, then Swordfish Trombones. Excellent stuff in its own right, but after Nighthawks, I realized how truly great Tom is.

Surprised you've never heard Waits sing before. Though there's a lot to love about this song, truthfully, I prefer his later albums, where he concentrates more on the music, gets wild with percussion and unconventional instruments, and infuses everything with his incomprehensibly deep knowledge of American dialect and slang. Try the albums from Rain Dogs onward. Personal favorite songs: Sixteen Shells from a Thirty-Ought-Six; Jockey Full of Bourbon; Clap Hands; Hang on Saint Christopher; Hell Broke Luce; Johnsburg, Illinois.

This album actually is more recent than Swordfish Trombones and Rain Dogs. It came out in the early 2000s. Mule Variations. It also has Hold On and one of my favorite spoken words What's He Building In There?

@@snerdterguson Thanks for the correction. My evaluation stands though as regards my taste in 'Waits music'. I like the songs/albums with more music in them. His use of percussion is second to none and complements his singing. Without it, I'll mostly just pass.

Really wish all the reactors would wait until the song is over before making comments. Nothing any reactor could interject into the hearing of the songs can compare to the song itself. Many listeners are hearing the artist or song for the fist time

So just listen to the song
@danb8603 Жыл бұрын
@@MadAng66 As a viewer, I assume you are introducing most listeners to an artist or a song by an artist that they have not heard. I would hope that your purpose is to introduce people to great artists that they may not have experienced and maybe make some $...or maybe that is wrong, and your purpose is something else..maybe yelling to people in another room while a song plays is part of a "brand" you are building. To get the full experience, the song and artist should be heard uninterrupted, in my opinion, and if you have any useful insights into what you are hearing, they should be made after the song. Just one person's opinion. Maybe ask your viewers how they feel about it. Maybe most don't care. If so- so be it. This is not an individual critique of you, almost all reactors do it- because they think reviewing a song is about them. It is kind of like a critic making the review about themselves instead of the art, music, or movie they are telling us about. I am sure you are a good guy, with good intentions. Thank you for introducing Tom Waits to people who may have never heard one of the greatest songwriters who ever lived.

Tom Waits once acted in a film opposite Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep and HE was the one you couldn't take your eyes off of when he was onscreen. 37 years later and I can still quote one of his lines.

React to Tom’s “Pasties and a G-String.” You’ll love it. He’s a piano playing beat poet genius.

Hi , when i watch this performance i feel like most people don't get it , but it seemed like he captivated the audience. Tom's lyrics contain outdated references and phrases and plain speak. "Did somebody do somebody wrong" is a shout out to an older singer/song. (forget who just now) Because i think it's great i was very happy that you liked it. The simplicity of the instrumentation sets a barren tone to match The House. Or something like that. Jitterbug Boy Tom Waits peace.

As a fan of Tom waits for many years, I am jealous of your feelings during the discovery of Tom waits…… I played rain dogs for a few months strange. Then onto swordfish trombone, then, I was surprised by his early stuff, he plays a lush broken hearted lounge lizard act, check out nighthawks at the diner and closing time. Tom is a musician’s musician.

I like those voices by those guys who can write lyrics and put together a song like that. Tom is great. I see some thin similarities with Zucchero

Oddio....che Waits abbia qualche sottile somiglianza con Zucchero mi sembra un azzardo e forse una blasfemia.
