We think so too! If there are breakthroughs in software for Saturn that allow it to work on our hardware, we would certainly consider it for a future update.

jesus christ. Everyone calling MJR “disingenuous” fails to see the work he put into this video. He has disclaimers. He’s not telling you to support the project, but simply making people aware that it exists. He points out the flaws with the project and does his job as someone who has been trusted with a prototype. The legal complications behind this Seedi system are for YOU to look at yourself. That’s why he puts a link to their website to read more about them. Don’t let these comments get you down, MJR!

Crowdfunded retro boxes are all too-often complete scams and KZbinrs alongside other game media continue to hype them no matter what. I REALLY appreciate that MJR delves deep into the product itself and even offers a warning about the aforementioned downsides to crowdfunding. I think the problem is that MJRs analysis and disclaimer comes a little too late in the video. Most negative comments are left before the person watching gets 30 seconds in...
@ZaireXIII
@ZaireXIII 6 жыл бұрын
Even with all the disclaimers and highlighting flaws, it still comes off as a bit of a sell and advertisement. Part of the issue too is how so many of these hardware crowdfunding projects end up as outright disasters with youtubers hyping them up or "...hey check this out!" kind of subtle sells to support the campaigns. So while I wouldn't say MJR is being disingenuous, these kinds of videos will continue to be problematic due to the association with those seeking money. This video may not be an outright endorsement, but it does skirt a fine line that we're seeing more and more of in the retro gaming community.
@OM19_MO79

That's what I liked about this video, he was responsible, unlike Riggs. It's a shame that his disclaimers and some comments about how inconvenient is this thing are quite shadowed by the way he praises the functionality of this piece of junk. By the way, the Retron, the Dreamcade, the Sigma and that atgames Genesis junk are not clone consoles, they are emulator boxes with cart readers/DVD drives. There is no real clone hardware as in an old chinese Famicom bootleg or the Coleco Gemini.

completely agree that he shouldn't necessarily be getting flak for this, but he does have some sort of influence over his audience. I like the guy. It worries me that these guys haven't got neo geo CD running at full speed and on their own channel they are talking about optimizing it ONCE THEY GET FUNDED. That to me is very worrying, as they have already been told they won't have support from the retro arch guys. I wouldn't put my money into this tbh even if I was interested in what it offers.

Then why didn't they just make a commercial emulation frontend and sell it as a piece of software? Oh yeah, because it's a lot more profitable to trick people into buying an off-brand raspberry pi at a ridiculously high markup.

Easy way to get a seedi: 1) Buy an Orange Pi kit 2) Buy an external usb DVD rom 3) Download a retropi image and format to a microsd card. 4) Insert it into the Orange Pi and do a little setup. 5) Enjoy without worrying about a risky indiegogo campaign that may not come to fruition.
@seedisystem8697

That actually won't do what Seedi can do (play your original games right off the CD)! We have added a bunch more functionality under the hood, and also not just any drive will work well. Check out our hardware video for more info: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHvEq3eOr5qEbMU

"Under the hood", or under the overlay that your seedy, i mean, Seedi frontend displays on screen while the emulators are being called to run? All you did was a crappy frontend and a 3-D printed case. You are profiting out of existing not-for-profit software and hardware. Your junk cost no less than $30 at most, I bet you will order bulks of Orange Pi's from AliExpress making each board about $2.50 and you'll get a bunch of miniSATA DVD drives from broken laptops. "Play your original games right off the CD", just like any PC, laptop, XBox One (for XB360 and original Xbox) or PS3, you sounded like an idiot trying to impress other bigger idiots.

1) Wait until SeeDi is released 2) wait for someone to rip the software 3) buy Orange Pi + DVD Rom 4) flash software onto retro pi 5) enjoy for maybe few bucks less
@OM19_MO79

Even better: 1) Wait until you SeeDi's listed on Craigslist, ebay or at Goodwill. 2) Flash it. 3) install better emulators. In the meantime, get a $50 1997 PC, does far more and still can be connected to a modern TV with VGA

Who cares about PS1 support? You can get that on a PS1, 2 or 3, which are all super common and dirt cheap. They should have focused on getting the more obscure formats running better and support DOS games at least up to 486's IMO.

Remember that developing emulators isn't in their scope. They need a working emulator with a proper licence that allows then to ship the emulator on their product.

Also remember that developing any emulator requires not simple money, but skilled people capable of getting the job done. Of cource, once somebody capable of is willing to do it, it'd be great to have a crowdfunding so he can work full time on the job.

*The idea as well as the already working prototype is awesome!* As soon as you said DOS up to 386 I squinted to the left where my "Warcraft - Orcs & Humans" BlackmArket box is sitting on my desk, mocking me for years to finally modify a random toaster into a device capable of playing DOS games so I can run it again some day... It would be awesome if I had a plug and play device for me TV/projector to play DOS games and some of the older CD based games. *One question though:* How does saving on this device work? Does it utilize the harddrive as some memory card for PS1? I remember old PS1 games having "blocks" in stead of default disk space units...

Seedi System According to your page all the CD-based console games need the original BIOs to run, except PS1 but that's neither here nor there. So, out of the box it can't do what it was mainly advertised for without doing some fiddling and shady file acquisition? Nice.

So they took a Single Board Computer that somebody else built ($15 on AliExpress), put it inside an enclosure, along with a CD Drive (which cost about $5), a controller that somebody else designed and built ($10 on AliExpress), loaded it with programs and emulators that other people created, and then want $125 for putting it all together? So...what did they actually do? Did they at least design the enclosure and write the code that auto-detects and runs the discs?

Here's my two cents: I love the concept of the Seedi, I really wish there was something like it made by the repro console manufacturers, but I am very, VERY unimpressed with the hardware proposed and the people behind it. On one hand it's yet another retro throwback device that, at least in it's current state, is running on all off-the-shelf parts that are easily accessible and running software that you can get online for free. On the other hand it's a retro console specifically made to run disc-based games, something that these clone and throwback consoles have been sorely overlooking since the market for these opened up about a decade ago. I like the idea for the console, I really do, but so far there is very little I'm seeing about it that gives me confidence in this system or the people behind it, nevermind having me consider actually giving any of my money to them. I understand that with how complex most of these CD-based consoles are, the most efficient solution would be to have the machine be an emulation box; my major problem stems from the use of cheap and easily obtainable hardware, more specifically a mini-PC devboard like the OrangePi. We've already seen numerous retro-inspired crowdfunding hopefuls using generic parts that either failed to impress out of the gate, or disappoint people once the smoke and mirrors are removed and we see the guts of the thing be nothing like what they were advertising. Hell, the recently released Retro Engine Sigma quickly gained infamy because it was an OrangePi running EmulationStation under the hood, many of these units failing due to the bad boards and clumsy design, and many backers like the Immortal John Hancock showing their disappointment and displeasure towards it after receiving their units. I'm not going to call out these guys for being cut from the same cloth as the men behind the RetroVGS/Coleco Chameleon, Atari Gameband, PGS Handheld Computer, Oton-X or many of the other Kickscammers that were trying to win gamers over with a lot of fluffed words and pretty concept art with little, if anything, to show for it. However the people behind the Seedi appear to be cut from the same cloth as the people behind the aforementioned Retro Engine Sigma and Hyperkin with the Retron 5, which is an equally treacherous road to go down if they continue that route. Using hardware that is easily obtained or duplicated, along with software that is also easily obtainable and falls under strict and specific open source licenses about usage (especially when you decide to disobey said licenses and use it without knowledge and/or permission from the authors), for a project of this nature is a sign of either incompetency or flat out laziness. The Seedi simply appears, pun wholly intended, _seedy_ because of following the exapmles of the RES Team and Hyperkin in this regard. Even with the promise of the software being fully optimized for the games it'll support the physical media of, I can't trust my money towards a team of guys in their basement essentially making a RetroPi emulation box with a disc drive attached when I could pay just as much or potentially less to do it myself. At least when Nintendo jumped into the retro plug-n-play market with the Classic Editions, they made sure everything on the devices worked 100% as intended, the build quality was up to their brand's standard, and the open source software they used was clearly stated in their license info complete with a link to where it's hosted on their website. I would be more willing to throw my money at one of those things because they're self-contained machines that actually have quality control in both hardware and software. I can't see the same quality assurance coming from this console, ESPECIALLY when it's coming out of a crowdfunding campaign using hardware known to fail on previous, similar ventures and outright stealing software from a major open source software project. Please note that I'm not criticizing the ambitions or motives of the people involved with the Seedi or its campaign, but considering the many examples of similar projects, this is what they're giving me an impression of when I see and hear this. My final point is this: if any of you guys from the Seedi Kickstarter are reading this, I urge you to cancel the campaign as it is and drastically redesign the console. It was mentioned that you guys had a more powerful console design in mind, and I'd say start with that since an emulation machine is more likely to work better and have better accuracy and compatibility if the hardware is more powerful. Actually get permission to use the emulation software you decide to use, or at least comply with GPL licensing properly as to not risk any lawsuits or public backlash. Hell, maybe attempt forgoing the crowdfunding and actually approach the manufacturers of these reproduction consoles with a more fleshed out design and prototype to see if they'd be willing to make them and put them out there, only going back to Kickstarter if they all reject the idea. Also, rename the console, if I can pull a pun mocking the untrustworthy nature of it out of my ass than someone with more wit than me will certainly do worse.

They all run forever until they don't Everdrives are not for preservation. Everdrives are for not swapping your games and having them all on a single cartridge. Cheap non ever brand ones even might have the opposite effect of preservation. Optical emulators though are great. I really want a SD card driven Dreamcast and PS2 in time. I still prefer having all my stuff in one place and having as much on my computer as I can. Even with that said I love to tinker. And if retroarch was not so unfriendly I would have some pie system up and running at this point.

Soap Babes TV So you can play what? Lol, Alien Breed? Beneath a steel sky? Zool? Liberation? And that's about it. It'd be a lot of work for maybe two to three dozen games that are still worth playing today.

Angry Dragon no, it's still piracy if you own the console but download the BIOS ROM, but it's not something that a console manufacturer is going to split hairs over for a retro console... Other than Nintendo, that is.

Prototype of what? The logo?, the frontend overlaid in the already available emulators? The crappy plastic shell? This is no prototype, not only is a repackaging of existing hardware and software, is the final product. They've already said it, it can only work with that cheap USB DVD drive,so there can be no more changes to the final product in terms of hardware unless they manage to be able to use a Banana Pi, instead of an Orange Pi.

John Riggs: RIGG'd Games I think ripping the iso would be better, less running of the drive and less risk of it damaging the game, even if that risk is pretty small to begin with. Many Sega cd/ps1 emulators can run off discs already, I used to before getting a ps2 emulate ps1 games in my pc back in 1999/2000 using the discs. It was buggy but worked and I imagine it works be lot better now.

they are doing also all the software to make it work of the bat. So yeah, you can get a pi, a case, a cdrom drive, several emulators, a linux distro, get down with some programming and do that stuff yourself if you want, or you can buy that stuff for cheap and not waste weeks on it

This is not a Raspberry Pi (or a Banana Pi), it's an Orange Pi, which are like half the price. Most people don't have one and wouldn't know what to do with it if they did. It would probably come out more expensive anyways as you'd have to pay for shipment on all the individual parts.

I got goosebumps when I saw the Ms dos screens. Been such a long time. Still own a few games that we got when we bought our very overpriced 486 back in the days. It cost at that time about 2,600€ which today would be something like Alienware or equal :D I am definately gonna get one of these simply because it´s a special feeling picking out a game on the shelf and then pop it in and enjoy. Also my cd/dvd based systems all start to fail one after another, either the laser or the tray so I have to buy more of them just to be able to play the way I want to. great video.

"overkill"? ... there's no such thing as overkill for CPU and RAM... :-D I used to test emulator on (linux) laptop that more powerfull than that orange but still sometimes it lag more than a modern steam game i play. maybe my configuration is wrong or sometimes linux distros had a glitch on VGA... but still tho.. 512MB with quadcore ARM doesn't powerfull enough for CD-base emulator. maybe for 16 bit game, but 32bit need more RAM ...
@BoyAditya
@BoyAditya 6 жыл бұрын
yea, but this is not PSX machine. it's a computer with Operating System that emulating PSX. that need more power than just native machine. If they plan to use newer linux-base OS. most of linux now migrate to 64 bit, and 64 bit need more RAM. beside most of newer single board comes with 2GB RAM, so why not?. for long term (update OS, firmware, etc) .. who knows with newer single board, CPU and RAM, they will be able to support saturn and MS-DOS (pentium 100) games
