I think the biggest disappointment for me was the fact that there are no ballads, which really made the dynamic of this album on a macro scale very grating. James is probably the most confident he's ever been as a vocalist, and the brief gentle section in Inamorata was breathtaking. His vibrato and tone are spot on, but it just feels like a tease. He's more equipped for a low key track than ever, but they forgo one and its so frustrating ESPECIALLY with how intimate and vulnerable these lyrics are.

The day that never comes is good, but half of the tracklist is just janky jumbled up filler with little bite or catchyness on both the vocal and riff front. Only good tracks besides that one are: All nightmare long, that was just your life, S*icide and redemption, and the Unforgiven III. Both DM have some of the same issues with them and also coincidentally get the d riding treatment too often.

Or mabye I won't care much for it after a year it's still so fresh in my mind. Death Magnet is actually in my top 4 Metallica records, I have it over Ride the Lightning. I think it's the best album in the Trujillo era, and glad he gets to shine more on this one. They really need to work on the ebb and flow of their albums though. I think that's been people's biggest complaint. Not every song needs to be 7 minutes. If they had an album full of 3.5-4 minute songs, throw in a 7 minute one, and end it and on an epic one; that would suffice. James does sound amazing though. You can tell his heart was into it.

Love the Rob and Kirk contributions. No one talks about this, but I know they made these tracks with the live in mind, the boys technical ability is lowering every year and they want to keep it fun and doable. I know this album will permeate future setlists, no one talks about that theory.

@@Karl_Drogo55 I don't like shitting on other people's comments, especially when it's always subjective, but claiming that this is "instrumentally as strong sounding as they've ever been" is absolutely ridiculous, and the only way to explain it is new album release hype. If you mean in terms of playing, RTL, MOP and AJFA are absolutely legendary for their songwriting, precision and technicality for the time. If you mean production, The Black Album is genuinely one of the best produced albums in history. 72 Seasons does not come anywhere close on either front.

I've been enjoying it a lot so far. Back when Hardwired came out I wasn't really in the mood for Metallica so I didn't really get that much into it. The singles have grown on me over the years, but I don't have a well-formed opinion about the album as a whole. Can't say how well 72 Seasons will age for me, but I'm having fun so far. I have a lot of respect for Hetfield being very open about his personal issues in the lyrics. The more I age, the more I can relate to his more open post 80's lyrics while the older texts acquire new meanings. I do have to agree that the records is one-dimensional. I would have like a ballad or two as well. There are no ballads on Hardwired either if I'm not mistaken? But above all I'm just happy they are still around and active. It makes me a little bit happier!

The last three songs on this album are the best ones. Out of the four singles released prior to the album, all of them were fairly good as well, even if "Screaming Suicide" is the weakest among them. It's hard to say whether this is better than hardwired, but that's probably just because it featured the epic, and badass, "Spit out the Bone" . "Inamorata" is epic as well, but not in a way that recalls their classic sound. Overall, this is the type of music that it makes sense for them to be doing at this point in their career. It's better than their worst material, not as good as their 80's stuff, and is mostly a success, albeit not without minor issues. (Song lengths etc.) The only track I might feel compelled to skip is "Crown of Barbed Wire" which is the worst this album has to offer. "Sleepwalk my life Away" and "You must Burn!" are weaker tracks as well, but I like them better than say "Now that We're Dead" or "ManUnkind" from the last album, or "Cyanide" or the unnecessary "The Unforgiven III" from Death Magnetic.

I think for me, it was a matter of timing when I sat down to really listen to this album; I feel like my love of the genre was something I never felt comfortable sharing with my wife. I'd have some pretty standard stuff playing and she just wasn't into it. We eventually decided to divorce and my buddy invited me to this concert last weekend (the last Metallica album I listened to was Death Magnetic). There were a couple songs I didn't recognize so I bought the album. It was a comfort to hear the standard licks and progression I fell in love with as a kid. I've honestly been listening to this album all week on repeat, which has helped me get through what would have been our ten year anniversary. Yeah it's pretty basic, but I think that's also comforting

After the reactions to this album I feel like Death Magnetic is due for a critical re-assessment. The biggest issue with that album -- aside from the mastering, but you can download a patch for that -- was that it was a little too one-dimensional and long-winded at times... But going back to it after these last two, it's practically an explosion of color and texture and catchy hooks. And as long as you're listening to the right version, it's pretty well-produced too, with a natural but hard-hitting sound that doesn't sound super overdubbed. I still made a few edits here and there that I prefer, but overall, still pretty impressive.

Metallica stopped not looking back till DM. The riff output on that album is mental, looking back helped them with those cool riffs but their physicality was not the same as 20 years previous. That game came out right around this album and so they offered the whole thing as DLC, and someone figured out how to extract the files and they sounded better than the actual album. That was the secret sauce that allowed people to fix the album. (I think the GH team also ratcheted up their DRM efforts after that happened, but the damage was done.)

Nothing many others haven’t already said, and I really have nothing new to add… but I genuinely wanted to like a new Metallica album. I genuinely enjoy progressive metal tracks that run on and on, so it’s not just song lengths, or album length. Again, already been said, but it’s too safe.. I continue to just be a “first five albums are basically perfect, the rest meh” type fan. Oh well, back to the dozens of other great metal (and non metal) albums out so far this year. I understand the criticism, but I personally think the album is good. Not their most memorable or experimental one, but it’s still mostly enjoyable to listen to. A lot of the tracks have good lyrics, get me hyped and Trujillo sounds great on the album. Sure, they could’ve gone a little harder or shorten some tracks, but at the end of the day they’re pushing 60 and James went through some tough times during the last years (with his divorce and relapse). I’m just glad they’re still out there and they still sound really good live, so I’m excited to see them. If this is the kind of music they want to do and have fun playing, I’ll support them. They don’t really have to prove anything anymore, I think. Plus many fans weren’t exactly kind to them when they were more experimental and vulnerable with their music. Even last year few fans paid Kirk’s solo EP attention which was different from the usual Metallica sound. To me they’re kind of like my metal grandpas - their best music is in the past, but there’s something comforting about what they put out now and I’m just glad they’re still around. I honestly didn’t even expect them to put out another album after Hardwired, so 72 Seasons was a nice surprise that I’ve been listening to during these last weeks until I see them in concert again :)

The singles that came from this album got me worried that the album would’ve been boring or repetitive. Which some of the songs were kinda. This album had surprised me and definitely blew my expectations. The final song Inamorata didn’t feel dragged out and it was the best song in the album. I give the album an 8/10 and is definitely something I already have relistened so many times. I would rank this around the middle of their discography (Load and Reload for me).

Totally agree with you on this. I've listened this album many times, and I've almost forced myself to enjoy it. It kind of bores me to be honest, sounds like they've lost alot of their songwriting chops.

From the first singles released i had a feeling this would be a corny album. The opening to Screamin Suicide sounds like something from an early 2000s sonic the hedgehog game.

I thought this album was a step up from Hardwired, and that album has aged very well with the fan base. I feel like the band is building towards something truly great for their 45th anniversary.

You really think there's gonna be a new Metallica album within the next few years? haha.. Even if they did plan on releasing another one after this and not retiring to a rest home It'll probably be another 7 to 10 years from now which has been their pattern since the early 2000's... far beyond making It In time for their 45th anniversary, lol

When is the review of HMLTD The Worm? I thought you were taking your time to listen to it but it seems you forgot or skipped it because you reviewed 72 seasons and it came out much later

Magnetic had ideas. Hardwired had structure. This has nothing.

My peronal favorite aspect of this new album is James' vocal performance. He has so much power and sustain in his voice, and that comes through almost every song in this album.

I think hardwired is far more adventurous and sometimes fresh & experimental than the cut and paste riff and snare fair that is 72 seasons 1 direction the whole way
