On the episode of Tone-Talk Bob Rock was on he was asked about the tone from the black album and said this: The mics he used were an SM57 and a 421, along with a room mic (an 87 if I remember correctly) The amps used were a Mark, and Bob's Jose modded Marshall, which was slightly different from most if not all other Jose modded Marshall's. He doesn't mention slaving the Mark into the Marshall like they did for Master or Justice. He doesn't mention what cabs were used, but you can clearly see in the documentary that they used mainly Marshall cabs. I can't remember if it was on Tone-Talk or the Andrew Scheps podcast that Bob said that he has used the 70 watt Vintage 30's from the 80's on almost every single thing he's ever recorded. One interesting thing is Bob said that James used a Mark III, not a IIC+ or IIC++. Maybe he meant a Mark IV

The effort that went into The Black Album is absolutely ridiculous but as a gear nerd it's equally fascinating. It is not one of the best selling metal albums of all time... IT IS THE BEST selling metal album of all time and by far. Also the best selling album worldwide since its release in 1991. Metallica fucking rocks, screw the haters.

The slaving a Marshall thing is a myth, Fleming himself says so in the Puppetz book and in the forums. He says it may have been for a couple of solos, if that 👍
@Justice_Hammer2 жыл бұрын
100%..... his exact quote was: “It is only on some solos we use the JCM 800 as poweramp. Most guitars are with the Boogie powerstage!” And as for the Marshall connection with the Black album tone, it’s a cab running a Jose modded Marshall blended along with the Mark IIC/IV action through the multiple mikes into the single track that is “the tone”, nothing to do with the power section.

Now get ready to see the already crazy 2C+ prices skyrocket ... I own an original 1984 C+ and yes it does sound phenomenal but so do the mark III and IV. Also, for the Master of Puppets rhythm stuff, no marshall amps were used. All 2C+

Id rather get a JP head. It’s cheaper new than a used 2C+ lol

I read that Kirk used the ADA MP-1 for leads on boosted with a boss SD-1 for the AJFA album, I've actually tried this and made a Kemper profile for the Blackened cover I did, and can tell you it sounds pretty legit! Obviously we're talking different albums here, but I don't see why he would stop using the ADA for at least some leads, and just decide to use it for cleans, so I'm going to assume it was used to the black album aswell, I haven't tried it yet though, so can't confirm how close it sounds. Awesome vid though man👍

The best. The greatest. The most masterful metal album ever created. As close to perfection in recording and writing and vocals in metal that has ever been captured. Of all time. In every single possible way. Compare every recording to this as this album is THE bar. I’m grateful that this album exists it shows what is/was possible and I wish more albums were pursued this way. I wish Metallica had pushed even farther after this in perfection. Either way, the best metal album ever. Period.

Anyone who says this album is not metal doesn't know what they're talking about. I mean it's not thrash anymore, but it's still metal. AJFA was no thrash album aswell.

Insane tone.. I tried playing around with black album Ir's before but the thing is, these tones were made to go with that insane drum and bass sound. They fit sooo well together. Its all about space. This tone kinda works for slower kinda heavy songs but on its own, just trying to play some fast riffy stuff with it, it wont really work.

They should've recorded that whole album in D standard. So. Heavy.

That's it at 9:00, when U reduce Bass levels You get that recording sound of the guitar. What I've noticed when I jam alone is that I dial in too much bass, that might be a good and thick sound in such occasion but once the bass player and drummer join my guitar sounds too murky in that mix. So I simply roll down bass to let crunchy treble out. Each instrument in a band has a dedicated soundsphere so covering bass frequencies with your guitar is not advisable. On the other hand You're tuned to D standard, good for Sad but true percussive chunk of a verse riff but Sandman and other songs sound too fat and bassy when played in D.

When I still had a Mark V 35, I got close with my EP boost and my 1960B cabs that are loaded with Creamback Neos. Greenback Ms & Hs blended sounded good too.
