This makes total sense. It always sucked that the bass was cut down on this album, cuz Jason Newsted was insane with a pick! Even listening to just THIS is heavy as hell! Everyone here should check out some live videos of his previous band Flotsam and Jetsam, the first thing you'll notice is he completely carries the entire band, INCLUDING the drummer. This album always seemed like they just went without a bassist in honor of Cliff. But we all missed out on how good this guy really was.
@rahlife792311 жыл бұрын
It's a fucking shame they turned his bass trax basically off on this record. They turned the bass way up on the guitar and killed the record. If they remixed it with this sick fucking bass tone and a thinner guitar that shit would be nasty!!!!!!! This, harvester of sorrow, and dyers eve are Lars’ best work. What happened to him if he kept going at that pace like in the 80’s improving in each album like he was he’d be a drum god today. Lombardo and benante just keep getting better and better what is his excuse. He has one job being a world class drummer and songwriter for Metallica. He could have been as good as anybody in the business especially with his resources and contacts. He’s was one of my main influences for drums. I think losing cliff and not having him to light a fire under his ass had a lot to do with his regression. With cliff the whole band improved at a geometric rate losing him was a tragedy imagine if he lived the possibilities of where their music and abilities would have gone
@stevenbuchholz88655 жыл бұрын
It F&J Jason has a galloping style, alternate picking and a really bouncy sound. Doomsday has a perfect bass sound for that album. I remember reading an actual, paper, magazine article! I know right? That James more or less tasked Jason with employing more down stroke style picking for a more solid thick sound that matched James’ aggressive down stroking.

Maybe we all should consider that nowadays we have digital recording technology and we use it very often to enhance the bass frequencies for techno as good as metal pieces. Some speaker systems have sub-woofers (remember any 2.1 or 5.1 systems in the past?) to push the bass to even feel a chest massage rather than to hear the sound. I think that makes 80s recordings now sound somewhat 'old-fashioned', because the tape used in the studio had not such wide frequency range.
@artvandelay44858 жыл бұрын

It clashed because Hetfield plays in the low frequencies that the bass usually uses, if you turn up the bass you cut in to Hetfields gutar sound, and James didn't want that. On "Metallica" Newkidontheblock played in the middle frequencies vacated by Hetfield allowing the bass to be louder in the mix without steeping on the guitar tone.

@LambdaObjection12 жыл бұрын
You probably could. I went cheap and used Audacity. Most of the tracks have had their speed altered slightly for the Guitar Hero game they're avaliable from, so if you fiddle around with the tempo and sync them up, you can export it as one complete song. I've done it with most other Metallica tracks too, as Cliff paticularly is HIGHLY under-represented on most pressings of their albums, something you can't tell until you hear his tracks alone.

There's a reason the bass is barely audible in Justice. It's simply because the guitars had scooped mids. Scooping mids has to be compensated by having a lot of lows and highs otherwise the sound wouldn't work. Listen to the isolated guitar tracks of this song in particular, the bass caused by palm mutes is really loud; having a loud bassline underneath wouldn't work.
@Kudabear19 жыл бұрын
Ikr the and justice for Jason mixes sound like ass cuz off all the low if metallica wanted that kinda gtr tone then she shuda at least put a high pass on the bass and increased the mids that woulda been an okay mix
@aldo420ful9 жыл бұрын
Mugi Snax metallica already acknowledged they lowered the bass volume on purpose, your argument is invalid and jason is a loser with no dignity for allowing that
@sjang8169 жыл бұрын
aldo420ful he'd been in the band for 2 years at that point, plus with lars being lars, do you think the result would have been any different? and we don't know if he didn't try to protest..he must've, the bass is non-existent, maybe during the blackened intro, very faintly during the clean part in one and again clean part in to live is to die. at the end of the day it's james' and lars' ship and thir word was/is final i listened to death magnetic for the first time yesterday..it's not as bad as i read..at times it's like a mish-mash of their previous albums, like them trying to live in the past..but i was just thinking how it's kind of unfair that the bass is loud and prominent, yet on their greatest album there's none
@Goabnb949 жыл бұрын
+Mugi “Mucchan” Snax And James and Lars mixed the album because the engineer couldn't keep up with the hectic schedule. Do you know what happens when a band mixes themselves? There is a reason the drums are *so fucking loud*, of course the drummer will turn himself up. So, when Jason plays the same track behind really loud guitars and drums, it makes it harder to hear.
@Goabnb949 жыл бұрын
+aldo420ful A)They hazed him in the first 6 months only. B)If that were true, why is Garage Days perfectly fine? Surely they would ruin that and not a studio album on purpose. What kind of legacy would that set for Cliff? C)The recording schedule was so hectic, Jason tracked his parts without the band and James and Lars mixed the tracks. He never heard the final version until after it had released. Maybe due to some "hes the new guy" but always due to the schedule of the band needing to travel, tour and record at the same time D)He never really complained about it because he didn't want to be that new guy to challenge everything. They still turned him way up live, so...

@simaodocaminhao I disagree because unless you use load of effects that's pretty much the raw sound you get straight from a bass attacked with a high energy. just hear how sounds the bass played by newstead on the black album I red an interview of Rex from Pantera, he said that on far beyond driven he played sitted, and more softly, rather than standing up and playing like in live. And the sound is more controled, and also more powerfull.
