It's a tribute. A compliment to Knopfler and The Straits. To have someone of Metallicas success giving recognition to my favourite band of all time touches me. It probably touches Mark Knopfler too.

Maybe he’s trying to say that Knopfler’s version is more emotional; whereas Hetfield puts that aggression into it, making it feel like it’s more about the battle than about the men who are dying. Just guessing.

Why is everyone arguing about this! Dire Straits original version is beautiful, but Metallica's cover is a completely different sound and should not be compared to Dire's. The two stand separately, and both are awesome. I personally prefer Metallica's because it is so stark and raw, and war is stark and raw, but that is just my preference.

BBelt Metallica Covered it from the Dire Straits. And NOOOOOOO Mark Knopfler the Original Singer And Guitarist from the Dire Straits is a too big Legend to cover
@NMXP7 жыл бұрын
I think the same could have been said for disturbed Covering Simon and Garfunkel yet Disturbed got a message from Garfunkel praising their performance on the sound of silence. legendary to who? there are many people who have no clue who he is and would hate his music, Covers are just that covers, some get it right and do amazing and give a different feel to the original song. I'm sure some love this cover and don't care for the original and vice versa but it's just down to personal preference and personal opinion. But either way they performed this at a charity event so good for Metallica for doing something different to themselves.
@Jan62111713 жыл бұрын
ANYONE who does this song in the way these guys did, or in someones own well intended way, has his heart on the right place. WHY are they allowed to play ONE, and not THIS One? Good things should be tributed, and by that way made unforgetten...and shared by as many as possible.
@stevehs42878 жыл бұрын
I have been a Metallica fan since the late 80's but this cover lacks the heartfelt emotion of the Dire Straits original. Knopfler's soulful, haunting voice was filled with such emotion and sadness that you almost felt he had experienced what his lyrics were describing. This cover is not even close.
@angstikala12 жыл бұрын
Exactly, it is a tribute and it doesn't matter if it is worse or better than the original. The point is that Metallica showed respect towards Knopfler and I think thats nice :)

I`m a life long 'Metalhead`, love bands like metallica, megadeth, pantera, death, amon amarth, but James Hetfield does NOT have the voice for this song, IMHO Dire Straites and Mark Knopfler did the original and best!

Exactly what I think. In fact, let me add that James sings way better (technically speaking) than Mark, but this song fits Mark's voice better. Anyway, I don't hate this version at all either.
