While this isn't the biggest concern in history, it's widely regarded as one of the most important because it was the first western concert since the fall of the soviet union, a major symbol for the peace they had just obtained from the communists.

Which one was bigger? I'm pretty sure I read that it was the biggest. Some years ago so I'm probably wrong

@@Randybobandy024 IF I’m not mistaken, Rod Stewart had a concert in the 90s with around 4 million people, and it is the largest. It was also a free concert on a beach, so there’s that

Nope the Soviet Union hadn't collapsed yet, it collapsed about 3-4 months after this concert

If we exclude celebrations that just so happened to also have concerts, like the New Year’s Eve shows in Rio, or the Bastille Day in France, this show was the largest at the time. Only being beaten by Jean-Michel Jarre in the same city, Moscow, 6 years later. But even that we could almost put an * next to because it was a celebration of the 850th anniversary of the city of Moscow. This concert was, and still is, the single largest concert that wasn’t celebrating anything, it was just a concert for people to listen to music. Like the Rio ones I can’t count those because half those people probably didn’t even know there was a concert going on because the count was probably just how many people were out on the beach and in the streets of Rio during NYE those years. Like they didn’t have a VENUE for those shows. Not everyone was there for a concert, most people were there to celebrate NYE and were just partying on the beach and in the streets for NYE and there just happened to be a stage set up and someone was performing because of course there would be for a NYE party. And the Bastille day one is similar, there were just a fuck ton of people out in Paris to celebrate the holiday and there happened to be a concert going on at the same time. The only one that you could really argue would be the #1 spot which was that 850th anniversary of Moscow one. Because it’s more likely that people were celebrating it by going to the concert, because 850 is a weird number to just celebrate with that many people out around the city just to celebrate. Granted i don’t know how it’s celebrated there and maybe they do have a big celebration every year for the city, so maybe it was something similar where people were just out celebrating the big day like usual except there was also a concert going on and so they just estimated the amount of people at and around the concert because of the celebration and said that was the attendance. But there’s no question that this concert was the largest that was at one specific venue where everyone there, was there ONLY for the concert and the music because there wasn’t a holiday happening where the numbers were boosted from a large crowd just out in the streets celebrating the holiday. So in my book, this is still the largest true concert in history

I like that in the early years Kirk Hammett was easily distracted by people calling his name or woman flashing him that he kinda forgot where he was in the song. He got back on it fast of course, but if you listen to some of the really old live stuff. Lars wasn't the only one skipping a beat haha
