James is awesome. Jason Newsted's back up vocals get overlooked by most. He really added to them, in live concerts especially.

Hmm.... If Hetfield and Mustaine had a baby that WOULD be the best vocals and rhythm. I've always found Hetfield the hardest to sing right and Mustaine the hardest guitar. I mean.... Holy wars. Try playing and singing THAT.

Massive respect for James, especially as a writer. Not my style of voice, but it works undeniably well with Metallica's sound and effectively communicates said brilliant lyrics. They're huge for a reason, and he's pretty much the heart of it.

@Nick te Lindert actually I think we're both right LOL. He blew his voice up recording SO WHAT? Which would suggest the Black album was mostly finished. Either way his voice changes dramatically from Black to Load.
@ssteacup
@ssteacup 3 жыл бұрын
@Nick te Lindert sorry to keep replying lol. But he blew his voice recording SO WHAT? for the b-side of the sad but true release. That was in 1993. Bob Rock is probably the reason why he sounds a little different in the Black Album, but its still the same James from And justice. Load is when we got this James we have today, one who took singing lessons. He sounds shit now imo.

This is one of your best analyses. So many young people are of the belief that "Metal singers like Hetfield NEVER use effects or double tracking". You clearly illustrated all the "grease" (you call it "cheese") that is used on his vocal. BTW: When you "cheesed it up", you added a harmonizer to put a maybe a second above him and 12th below him.

I really appreciate you going line by line with this one, Ken! James guitar playing and the way he’s used his voice through his career has always been inspiring to me. Pulling off a song like this and not “overdoing it” is more challenging than it sounds! But you make it easy to understand and I’m looking forward to using these techniques in my own music and performances. Thanks again!

My guess on your secret "cheese" at the end is you are panning the slightly-delayed doubles hard left and hard right, leaving the center information in the center. One double is pitch shifted down a few cents. Another panned double is shifted down a full octave. All versions are on short, tight room reverbs. Right? ;)

So why bits of rhythm guitars in the vocal track? Here's why: This (like many) isolated track actually comes from either Rock Band or Guitar Hero. In the game, there are isolated instrument parts, including vocals, drum, bass, and guitar. Just 1 guitar though. So when someone is using the guitar controller during the lead guitar parts, the rhythm part is temporary combined with the vocal. Once the lead part is done, the player goes back to controlling the rhythm part, and the rhythm audio is once again separated from the vocal.

James vocals for The Memory Remains is insane also. There's a high pitched vocal harmony in the song. An effect? Maybe. Or just something James was able to do back then. Perhaps to follow the high pitched guitar concept that happens during Marianne Faithfull's part.

Then, earlier today, I saw your video from Dec 30, 2020, on David Coverdale’s (Whitesnake) Here I Go Again, and you actually mentioned that regarding the use of the diaphragm to hit certain notes (reference to a Ronnie Dio interview). tprs.com/interviews/ronnie-james-dio-unlocking-his-secrets/

Sometimes when belting a high register with diaphragm support, its almost as if you're about to black out and you hear the last note that you hit ringing in your ears for a while... what does this mean?? Am i pushing my diaphragm too far too early??? Much more clearance on belting and puahing your chest voice would be really appreciated..

Great! Maybe this question is clear to anyone else but how do you get isolated vocals? As you mentioned in this video editing the music out is almost not possible. And for the "cheese" to me it is impossible to guess, but it sounded "less warm", something was doubled maybe?

Great analyse as always, James has a better voice than many are awhere off, im not a hardcore Metallica fan but like some of their music and albums, Black Album is one of them and some of their earlier stuff. As you im also a Christian but i also enjoy heavy metal and bands my fellow belivers don't listen to because of their lyrics and album covers like Iron Maiden, i know their covers, eddie and musical themes is just for show and none of them are into the occult etc, i love their music and maybe i judge things wrong but don't feel that way

Hi. I presented this song to my family as a lullaby. I think the "cheese" is a lower vocal harmony sung by yourself.

On 7:16 he said he dont know why guitars are present in this track. This track was made with vocalremover i guess. So it is a kind of reverse engineering algorythm, not the separate input on a mixer.

Sounded like you added a lower octave and some outside stereo panned vocals. Might have been more effect or just the same effect added to the "more tracks/layers" that made it feel like more effect.

Hetfield is great in the sense that he has a very STABLE sound on high notes ( with a complete control on the distorsion). Mustaine on the other hand has a very bad control on long notes ( his larynx is not in the right position). But both made great songs.

I always liked metallica they had a killer band I mean awesome band they were very tight always on it especially with the symphony that was just awesome but James hetfield he always growled when he sung but it was awesome for that type of heavy metal band he was definitely awesome with his growls and screams I liked it Ken if I tried growling like he did i would probably hurt my throat but James has his way of getting out without damaging his voice so yea Ken metallica is definitely awesome great explaining and great demonstrating Ken singing like him love your growls as well Ken awesome video buddy👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

James has blown his voice out a few times, though, so it certainly hasn't been without damage. He almost killed it on the Justice album, blew it out completely doing some covers (infamously while recording the So What? cover) before the Black Album and had to get a coach to recover it for recording. I think you can see the first appearance of the Hetfield warmup tape on A Year and A Half, but then he almost killed it again touring for like 3 years on the back of that album. I dunno that he ever had to have vocal surgery but he has to have come close a few times.

Fun fact: my first electric guitar looked exactly like the one on your shirt! \m/ (only, it wasn't a Fender but a London City) Nowadays I play Ibanez, Music Man and PRS, though. Anyway, I love this video. James is a great and one of my main influences as being a singer/guitarist.

I'm gonna guess the "gang vocal" detune effect for sure, and some reverb. To me though, James seems to focus on good clean tone primarily, and the distortion just seems to be an afterthought

Is the harmony James or Jason? Live Jason added a lot to vocals like Mike did 'Diamond Dave' in VH. Both seem a bit lesser whenever they're without their respective band mates. Loved this video. Love Metallica's sound even if the lyrics do upset my fellow Christian mates too. Wanted to be the 'Australian James Hetfield' but didn't put the work in. Much respect for those like them & you (& VH) on that score.
