@Nick te Lindert actually I think we're both right LOL. He blew his voice up recording SO WHAT? Which would suggest the Black album was mostly finished. Either way his voice changes dramatically from Black to Load.
@ssteacup3 жыл бұрын
@Nick te Lindert sorry to keep replying lol. But he blew his voice recording SO WHAT? for the b-side of the sad but true release. That was in 1993. Bob Rock is probably the reason why he sounds a little different in the Black Album, but its still the same James from And justice. Load is when we got this James we have today, one who took singing lessons. He sounds shit now imo.

This is one of your best analyses. So many young people are of the belief that "Metal singers like Hetfield NEVER use effects or double tracking". You clearly illustrated all the "grease" (you call it "cheese") that is used on his vocal. BTW: When you "cheesed it up", you added a harmonizer to put a maybe a second above him and 12th below him.

My guess on your secret "cheese" at the end is you are panning the slightly-delayed doubles hard left and hard right, leaving the center information in the center. One double is pitch shifted down a few cents. Another panned double is shifted down a full octave. All versions are on short, tight room reverbs. Right? ;)

So why bits of rhythm guitars in the vocal track? Here's why: This (like many) isolated track actually comes from either Rock Band or Guitar Hero. In the game, there are isolated instrument parts, including vocals, drum, bass, and guitar. Just 1 guitar though. So when someone is using the guitar controller during the lead guitar parts, the rhythm part is temporary combined with the vocal. Once the lead part is done, the player goes back to controlling the rhythm part, and the rhythm audio is once again separated from the vocal.

James has blown his voice out a few times, though, so it certainly hasn't been without damage. He almost killed it on the Justice album, blew it out completely doing some covers (infamously while recording the So What? cover) before the Black Album and had to get a coach to recover it for recording. I think you can see the first appearance of the Hetfield warmup tape on A Year and A Half, but then he almost killed it again touring for like 3 years on the back of that album. I dunno that he ever had to have vocal surgery but he has to have come close a few times.

Fun fact: my first electric guitar looked exactly like the one on your shirt! \m/ (only, it wasn't a Fender but a London City) Nowadays I play Ibanez, Music Man and PRS, though. Anyway, I love this video. James is a great and one of my main influences as being a singer/guitarist.

@@kentamplin Your channel always rocks. I've been a huge fan since I heard about it (a few years ago) and it keeps getting better. \m/

I'm gonna guess the "gang vocal" detune effect for sure, and some reverb. To me though, James seems to focus on good clean tone primarily, and the distortion just seems to be an afterthought

Is the harmony James or Jason? Live Jason added a lot to vocals like Mike did 'Diamond Dave' in VH. Both seem a bit lesser whenever they're without their respective band mates. Loved this video. Love Metallica's sound even if the lyrics do upset my fellow Christian mates too. Wanted to be the 'Australian James Hetfield' but didn't put the work in. Much respect for those like them & you (& VH) on that score.

Did anyone work out what Ken added to the track - did sound thicker.
