I have a special affection for this song, it saved me from suicide, that final part leaves me wanting to hear more, wanting to live more. Every time I listen to this song, it doesn't remind me of what I felt when I wanted to finish it all, but rather, it reminds me of when I found the strength to move on. 🤘

four weeks ago my big brother took his life. He left 2 letters behind, one of which was to our family, relatives and loved ones. The other he quoted Fade to black by metallica by hand. Everything in this text fits in with my brother's life. He had them well at a young age but darkened towards the end. My brother was only 27 years old when he left us in a great grief and, we had his funeral 2 weeks ago with This song when we carried him out to his last rest. His mental illness developed over the years and there was a lot of anxiety. Now my brother is buried and free from the darkness but left us in despair. The ones I want to say with these are to take care of you and you are never alone! Peace!

@@cadifferentreactions For me, I believe the lyrics of “Fade to Black” are about grieving and learning about one’s own mortality. For examples, the last verse on this song. “Death Greets me warm,” - Feeling dead even though you are still alive. “Now I will just say goodbye” - The most uplifting part of the lyrics. Being able to say “Goodbye” to your loved one and go on living without him or her. Plus this is my dad favourite metallica's song, and im really missed him :')

I agree with the sadness and anger assessment to an extent, it's a bit more nuanced for me. The las part, for example, as the lyrics end with "Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye" He is talking with death, so he is saying goodbye to death, not the world. Basically saying, "not today death". And then as the instrumental intensifies he is building resolve and determination to make his life mean something. Maybe that's just me, but that's how I relate this song with my personal experience with depression.

What makes me think you've got it right is the sentence right before : "Yesterday seems as though it never existed". It's as if one full day passed between the 2 last verses and the guy managed to get back on track, and he can finally tell death to f*ck off. A message of hope at the end of a very emotionaly heavy song. I hope it's meant like that, as it's a beautiful story
@PishPishoto
@PishPishoto Жыл бұрын
@@Lowly_Tarnished this sentence is actually what makes me think you've got it wrong 😂. For me "Yesterday seems as though it never existed" seems as though he had sunk so deep into the abyss that he has lost track with reality

Metallica wrote this after their equipment was stolen in early '84 and they had to start all over again. More specifically, James Hetfield (lead singer) wrote the lyrics in response to one of his amps being stolen. Not only was this amp his favorite, but it was also the first amp he ever owned (his mom gave it to him), so it had a lot of sentimental value to him. The song is about losing everything and wondering if it is worth going on.

No, James (singer, guitarist and frontman of Metallica) didn't have a good life that turned bad. The inspiration of this song came from a situation in 84, when several Metallica equipment were stolen. They were a new band, of a new genre and guitars rigs were too expensive. But James lost his favorite guitar amplifier, his first Marshall, that his mother helped he buy. James' mother died with cancer when he was 16, she denied any treatment because she was VERY religious. James' father left the family when he as 11, so his childhood was pretty sad. The lyrics of this song also has to be with they were recording at Denmark, and they felt a lot homesick. This song was the first Metallica ballad and they received a lot of letters of fans talking about their experiences related with this depressing song.

We’ll go through some types of depression it’s how we deal with it that matters the most and how are actions could hurt someone else in the process. There is nothing worth taking your life for! Talk to someone if you’re to that point maybe it’ll help you like it did me!

You guys are pretty close on your assessment of the meaning of the song. The singer, James Hetfield, had just recently lost his mother to a prolonged battle with cancer, she was unfortunately one of these people who believes that faith in Jesus will save you and didn't seek medical attention. No matter how much James and the family pleaded with her to go to a doctor, she remained steadfast in her faith that God would save her, and sadly she passed away. This song was James' way of airing out his feelings and emotions without actually telling everyone what really happened, it came out many many years later in an interview what the meaning behind the song really was. Edited part was just fixing a couple of typos, damn spell check, LOL 😂😂
