That was them first POWER BALLAD ever written (they wrote shortly after them gear from "KILL 'EM ALL" was stolen, like in the Autumn of 1983; they've recorded it for them second record - "RIDE THE LIGHTNING" from 1984)!!!! James Hetfield was very upset and sad because of that, and he probably wouldn't think of doing anything new after this happened to his band, but LUCKLY they've continued their passion and NOW they are one of the best HEAVY-METAL bands (as well as one of the BIGGEST) bands of the music history that's EVER existed. The FNAL GUITAR SOLO is PURELY showing the emotion on what was going on at this time, I believe. James Hetfield wrote the main riff, and the galloping riff (opening the second/faster part of the track), Kirk Hammett wrote the heavy part that's after the first two verses, and Cliff Burton wrote the guitar harmony (right before the final Kirk's guitar solo)!!!!!

Download is a huge metal festival in the UK. Some other bigger ones in Europe are Wacken, Rock am Ring and Rock im Park in Germany, Mystic in Poland, Mad Cool, Resurrection and Azkena in Spain, Nova Rock in Austria and Hellfest in France. Each year each of these festivals feature at least a few of metal and rock's top bands and usually include a lot of bands on the rise. Metal festivals, especially in Europe, are fucking amazing. This one in Russia was free, it featured Metallica, Pantera, AC/DC, The Black Crowes and EST. It was revolutionary, throughout the concert soviet soldiers who were in charge of surveilling the crowd took off their uniforms and went into the crowd midshow. Other soldiers were unfamiliar with the culture of moshing and thought riots were happening, multiple people were arrested iirc.
@zergnub74263 жыл бұрын
I think the concert took place in Vichino, which is an airport on the outskirts of Moscow. There were over a million gathered that day, making it the largest concert ever attended for a single band. It was 1991, right at the moment the soviet union fell and the russian federation was born. It was a radical choice, having a band like Metallica play there, a type of music that the authorities, a few years back, would not have allowed. You can almost feel the release of these people, allowed to breathe for the first time in a long time.

It was just a few months from crashing to the ground !!) and me and my mate spent the day with a bunch of US servicemen. They were the only other English speaking people we met that day and what a day it was. AC/DC were magic.

The funny thing about this Moscow gig is that everyone forgets AC/DC was the headline. Everyone watches the Metallica and Pantera videos because they played during the day - you could see the crowd. No massive crowd shots at night during AC/DC’s set.

The reason pantera's and metallica's (mainly james') clean tones were so similar, was because they used the same clean amp, which was the roland jc120.

I think I remember hearing the military tried their hardest to limit the crowd but gave up somewhere near a million people. By end it was well over a million. Pantera played that gig, and AC/DC was the top bill. I remember renting this video as a VHS from the local video story. I was in awe at how massive it was. There were several riots, and many women reported being raped. There was actually quite a bit of controversy since it was the first time a rock n roll show from America was allowed to play.

Rock Am Ring is pretty huge, and there was supposed to be a festival tour in the states this year where Metallica played 2 headliners and other massive bands like the Foo Fighters, Judas Priest, and The Scorpions (and others on par with them, depending on the region they’re in) would be dotted throughout the weekend. The one in Charlotte, North Carolina was supposed to be the using the Charlotte motor speedway and its massive surrounding grounds, so I’d imagine it would’ve been a huge deal.

I have to word this carefully. If you blokes enjoyed this performance, seeing them play Fade To Black in any other concert should send you to the moon. This section of the recording suffers... ah... a bit of adversity in instrument and media both, it's probably a u-matic or ampex secondary and the audio tracking has a warble in it. Oh, and none of the guitars would stay in tune more than a couple songs, they were handled badly on the flight over and hadn't normalized. Can't tell you if this before or after Lars sliced his thumb to the bone on the edge of a cymbal either. However: By the time Creeping Death and Harvester of Sorrow roll around on the tape, everything's well sorted.... those clips from here are *fantastic*. It's just FtB and Enter Sandman that are average/good, but not great/perfect.
