Thing of it is...this is just a great song. The structure, the cadence, the counterpoint, the dynamics. I remember when I was a teenager and my mom hated heavy metal in the early 1980s. She was a music teacher (band instruments). She heard Fade to Black and sat down and said, "My god. That's an amazing song." She did not like the distortion on the guitars, but she could see the brilliance in the fundamental song. At that point, she said, "These are great composers." When she heard "One" a few years later, she just shook her head and said, "This is brilliant." She died many years ago now, and loved to play Metallica songs on the piano. She could transpose them by ear. It was remarkable. This was before the KZbin Age, but I can only imagine this 60-something year old woman would have had a lot of views with her piano arrangements. James, Kirk, Lars et al are nothing less than modern day Beethovens and Mozarts. They are that good.

Many people don’t like James voice since he doesn’t sing with the gruffness he used to, but I think my favorite parts of Metallica songs lyrics-wise he’s gotten better on. Like in this video, his singing of that last ‘goodbye’. In the 2009 Mexico City concert that they filmed and also sold as a sort of movie, he rocked enter sandman as well.

My all time favorite song from Metallica. I know I'm not alone in this, but this song has gotten me through many, many hard times in my life. I have listened to it at least twice a day, every day (sometimes more depending on things) since November 13, 1994, the day i tried to kill myself and only stopped because this song came on the radio on a station that had no business playing it. I truly thank you Metallica for gifting me, and many others, this song. A song the gives strength when you feel as though you have none.

I always felt like the solo at the end, after he says goodbye to life and thus has nothing more to lose, actually represent a cry of war against death. As if only after he's reached rock bottom and thinks he has nothing more to live for, he suddenly finds true strenght and the will to fight for his life. After he has given up on everything he is, he's finally free of everything that was bringing him down as well, and as a new and free person he can now summon this wordless, raw strenght. I don't know if this was the intended meaning, but that's how I've always lived this song.

Fade to Black is just an amazing song. This song, One, The Unforgiven and Sanitarium all follow somehow like the same structure and arrangement. This is true melodic and dynamic metal. Every time I try to teach someone about Metallica, I put this song or one those I mentioned above. And the lyrics are so dark that they reach you. I really love Metallica.

I had a break with my girlfriend 3 weeks ago, she wants to know nothing of my pain, I miss her, I was not able to see without her ... I had black thoughts so to forget my pain I wanted to crush my car in a traffic post near his house to show him my pain seemed to what .. I looked at the pole I started crying, the song began to play in my car. .. The words of your song made me realize that it's not worth it to destroy my life ... Thank you Metallica!

Best Metallica performance hands down the whole band is spot on and the crowd adds that extra love! I ended up seeing them few months later and fade to black wasn’t even close to this night

This was indeed a special gig. The crowd was awesome singing alobg to all songs, you could see & feel that Metallica had a great time too. An outstanding gig full of energy.

There is no way to explain how I feel when listening to his music. are 20 years in which I fall in love with their work, I feel part of my life in each letter of their songs. I listen to them almost every day, waiting for the joy that each album gives me is one better than the other. continue playing with inspiration, in my 35 years you have become the best memory, the best melody, the incredible trash metal band that manages to trace generations and survive everything. Thanks for your excellent work. Please, return to Ecuador.

Is it just me or did the audio quality on these videos significantly improve ever since their April show in Germany? Everything sounds so crisp and the tone is incredible!
