Thing of it is...this is just a great song. The structure, the cadence, the counterpoint, the dynamics. I remember when I was a teenager and my mom hated heavy metal in the early 1980s. She was a music teacher (band instruments). She heard Fade to Black and sat down and said, "My god. That's an amazing song." She did not like the distortion on the guitars, but she could see the brilliance in the fundamental song. At that point, she said, "These are great composers." When she heard "One" a few years later, she just shook her head and said, "This is brilliant." She died many years ago now, and loved to play Metallica songs on the piano. She could transpose them by ear. It was remarkable. This was before the KZbin Age, but I can only imagine this 60-something year old woman would have had a lot of views with her piano arrangements. James, Kirk, Lars et al are nothing less than modern day Beethovens and Mozarts. They are that good.

Many people don’t like James voice since he doesn’t sing with the gruffness he used to, but I think my favorite parts of Metallica songs lyrics-wise he’s gotten better on. Like in this video, his singing of that last ‘goodbye’. In the 2009 Mexico City concert that they filmed and also sold as a sort of movie, he rocked enter sandman as well.

My all time favorite song from Metallica. I know I'm not alone in this, but this song has gotten me through many, many hard times in my life. I have listened to it at least twice a day, every day (sometimes more depending on things) since November 13, 1994, the day i tried to kill myself and only stopped because this song came on the radio on a station that had no business playing it. I truly thank you Metallica for gifting me, and many others, this song. A song the gives strength when you feel as though you have none.

I always felt like the solo at the end, after he says goodbye to life and thus has nothing more to lose, actually represent a cry of war against death. As if only after he's reached rock bottom and thinks he has nothing more to live for, he suddenly finds true strenght and the will to fight for his life. After he has given up on everything he is, he's finally free of everything that was bringing him down as well, and as a new and free person he can now summon this wordless, raw strenght. I don't know if this was the intended meaning, but that's how I've always lived this song.
