Evil rat lord, that's perfect. I fully believe Megadeth and Rush, huge as they both are (and deservedly), would have been even better with full-on lead vocalists, they're the only 2 big bands whose vocals really dial it down for me. Although the Evil Rat Lord works on songs like this one and the "Hello me, it's me again" one. Would've been cool with Dave as a 2nd/backup singer like Jerry Cantrell for AIC.

The difference is James is a vocalist that can play guitar too. Dave is a guitarist that ended up singing. James is a better singer, but Dave's vocal ability fits Megadeth's songs, so it works for him. But Dave is far and away a better guitar player in nearly every measurable way, like him or not.

I love both Metallica and Megadeth for different reasons. There's no question that Metallica is more melodic and James' voice is more appealing to a broader audience, but Megadeth's compositions (this song aside) are more complex, and I just dig Mustain's voice because it is so unique.
@razeezar3 жыл бұрын
Dave's vocals are what I personally like the least about Megadeth. I love their instrument tone, and as a bass player I appreciate that the bass guitar cuts through much better in Megadeth's mixes than most of Metallica's studio releases. Megadeth have brilliant musicianship (especially when Marty was on the roster) - Yet despite all this, I always gravitate most to Metallica, and to this day have never felt compelled to purchase a single Megadeth album. For all of Metallica's faults and low-points with some of their catalogue, for me their high-points still overall outshine their peers. I just try to avoid listening to St. Anger any more than I already have, and refuse to listen to any more of Lulu than the ~30 seconds that I once attempted out of sheer morbid curiousity. :-)

This album is from a really interesting period when the big thrash bands from the eighties (with the exception of Slayer) all addressed the question “what comes after thrash?”. Metallica produced the black album, Megadeth did this, Anthrax produced “The sound of white noise”, and Testament came out with “Low” (great title track). All are fantastic, really creative records with shorter songs and tighter structures than on the bands’ previous records. I would recommend listening to some of Testament and Anthrax’s music from this period.

Used to be Metallica for long long time but currently I prefer Megadeth. But I listen to both fairly equally tbh. I don't like the argument though, it was a shame to lose Dave as a guitarist in Metallica but just as grateful we got a kickass band out of it. Kirk have his flaws and technically inferior to Dave, but he has written some of the most memorable and iconic solos of all time. So no matter how you look at it, where one's have it's weaknesses the other have it's strengths. And they share a lot too. It's a preference but cab't go wrong with either over the other but deserves equal respect.

@Blitzyduder3 жыл бұрын
To call Kirk inferior technically to Dave is going way out of line. Dave is an excellent rhythm player and song writer but when it comes to solo's his bag of tricks is very limited and he often sacrifices melody for aggression and speed. Kirk's solo's fit the song and have memorable melodies and he keeps up with James on rhythm play no problem. I love both Metallica and megadeth equally for very different reasons. If you really want to feel the music, the lyrics, the message go metallica. If you want technical riffs and songwriting with blistering (marty) solo's and metal attitude go megadeth.
@TheNothing63 жыл бұрын
Blitzy: I agree. Dave could never compose solos like Ride The Lightning, Fade To Black, Creeping Death, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Master Of Puppets, Disposal Heroes, The Thing That Should Not Be, Orion, Blackened, One, The Shortest Straw, The Frayed Ends Of Sanity, Dyers Eve, The Unforgiven etc. Dave is great, but he does not use that much melody in his solos. He's never written a solo close to any of those I mentioned. He is all speed and aggression. I like both bands and both Dave and Kirk.
@vosman863 жыл бұрын
As a strictly lead guitarist Kirk is superior to Dave. But as an overall guitarist and metal songwriter Dave is superior to Kirk. That’s also why Dave hired legendary lead players to be in Megadeth. Megadeth - This day we fight! You gotta listen to this! This is a song from Megadeth's 12th album. For me it's amazing that, 26 years after the band was founded, Dave plays and sings so hard, aggressively and venomously. I cannot choose one band. I love Metallica and Megadeth. There are elements similar in both bands, but there are also a lot of differences between them. It's like choosing between a salami pizza or a bacon pizza. Sometimes I want one more, sometimes the other. But I know that I will like both of them for the rest of my life.

Dave Mustain actually got sober during the writing of this album, When the album came out it reached #2 on the charts. When Metallica's Black album came out and reached #1 in put Dave M back into his bad habbits and he started using again. It would take Dave M 16 total trips to rehab to finally stay sober. Peace Sell-Cryptic I think are Megadeth's best albums. Few other good ones after. You def need to listen to Devils Island, Peace Sells, Hanger 18, Tornado of Souls, Victory is a cool song, as it's is written with so many of their song name's in the song, I dont think I have ever heard any other band write a song with 22 song name's in the song.. IMO Megadeth stayed more thrash, Metallica went more Hard Rock in their later years.

I’m actually starting to like the complexity of Megadeth’s music, but Metallica is clearly more iconic. Songs like Fade to Black and One I don’t think Dave could write at that level of how iconic they are. But then you could say Metallica could never write a song as complex as Holy Wars. So Megadeth is more technically proficient, but Metallica is more iconic.

Being as you've dug deep into 80's Metallica, you would likely best understand the rivalry if you were to listen to "Peace Sells" or "Hook in Mouth", or even "Angry Again". Countdown to Extinction was the beginning of Megadeth's period where they sought to bring in more of a pop element to their sound because they were deadass broke from partying too hard through the 80's. Since you like Hetfield's voice, you might rather enjoy Mathew Barlow of Iced Earth. Try out "Burning Times" or "Melancholy (Holy Martyr)". I've love to see you do a reaction to these, but even if you just listen to em and enjoy 'em I'd be stoked. Yeah, their guitarist is in some hot water these days...but their music is fucking amazing either way. As far as completely unrelated songs: Testament - "Burnt Offerings" (Go for the remaster; slightly different feel, but I think you'd appreciate the more polished up recording) I don't usually leave comments on anything within 6 miles of youtube, but I've been watching ya for a loooong time and I love your positivity. Love both bands almost 30 years now. Gun to my head I’m gonna pick Megadeth more often than not. Depends on the day, time of year etc. I’m a guitar player, got massive love for both as a result. Loved your Rust in Peace full album reaction. Check out Megadeth’s HIDDEN TREASURES album - their covers and soundtrack songs, mostly from the Marty Friedman era (1990-1999) not a super long album but three dope solo/solo sections in BREAKPOINT, GO TO HELL, & ANGRY AGAIN. Songs 2, 3, & 4 respectively. And I’m sure you’ve seen people mention: the ORIGINAL recordings > the remasters. Look for original recordings if possible. I think Metallica is more accessible to a wider audience, and thereby more successful in general, because the overall package as a band is more complete and evolved. Megadeth has always been the more musically complex band IMO, but that fact in itself is nowhere near the sum net total value of a band. And while both bands bring heaps of value, Metallica just brings more. They check more boxes than any other band. It’s more common to see Metallica fans with no Megadeth albums in their collection than the opposite which reinforces that Metallica transcends the “competition” with Megadeth and pretty much any other metal band in terms of success. And they’ve had a lot of luck, talent, skill along the way too. It’s hard to luck into those first albums of Metallica’s, tremendous skill and vision on their part. They’re so popular they could make a polka album and it would go triple platinum. Megadeth has the Dave Mustaine connection, and they are one of the four horsemen of American thrash, but there is no competition. Like you said in the video it’s down to personal opinion. And both bands have alluded to the fact that promoting the “rivalry” helps sell tickets, merchandise, and albums for both bands (kinda like steely Dan and the eagles in the 70s but that’s another thing entirely). Keep digging both. It’s natural to want to pick a side but you’ll likely grow to appreciate both increasingly I suspect. Sorry for the long comment. Keep doing them reacts. Peace.

As vocals go, Hetfield's are kind of hit and miss on the last couple albums. Just my opinion, but Hetfield's best vocal years were from Justice through the Load era. On the other hand, Mustaine's vocals have stayed pretty consistent.

Someone said once "you listen to megadeth for the guitars." Which is true. Dave isn't the best singer (though in youthanasia he kicked ass imo) but he and Marty can shred. Kirk's shit at guitar. So you'll find that more musician metalheads will fall to megadeth more, and the people who just like metal and don't hear a difference between each solo go to metallica, as at the end of the day james does have the better voice
@joshuadavis25053 жыл бұрын
@ShimmerySound I agree Dave has a very good unique voice, and it isn't something that's ever affected me. But james has the more adaptable and commercial voice to suit more people's taste.
