Lars properly slows down during the double bass part after the guitar duel. It's noticeable, back down to album tempo. Once the double bass stops he speeds up again and James can't keep up.

@@ydnerol actually, it's more comfortable to play guitar like that if it's placed below waist. James' rhythm are mostly power chords (first & second upper string for most of the time), placing it slightly lower would make it more comfortable for him to do all the downstrokes, such as in Master of Puppets and Blackened.

MetalBlade only partially correct, this comment makes Metallica seem like a bunch of edgy preteens that we’re angry at the world, first thing, they within the group would have competitions to push each other to pay as fast they could, like a oh bitch you can’t play this fast? Type of thing, also if it look at the performances on the damaged inc tour, before cliffs death, they were already playing this fast, it wasn’t a new thing. I’m sure that playing live definitely helped them get out a lot of the sadness, and grief they had but a lot of this shit really is overdone. I’m also sure that they were very sad but like I said, none of the speed stuff was very new.

You can see and feel how fresh the wounds [of Cliff's death] are here.
@seanwilkinson39758 жыл бұрын
I saw them live at the Max Bell Arena in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on December 17th, 1986. I can attest to the fact that they played with the same hellacious, white-hot, angry fury as this video shows, most likely being partially out of their minds with grief over Cliff's death (and, in Jason's case, sheer joy for being picked as Metallica's new bassist). Of course, at age 18, those factors didn't come to mind - I was simply blown halfway around the world by their triple-speed playing. I loved Cliff, but I accepted the inclusion of Jason easily, since it kept my favorite band (at the time) motoring on. It's a shame that Lars and James couldn't, and tortured and tuned him him out of the band in ten years...their loss. But, oh, well...who among us hasn't fucked up hugely in life? Vive le Metallica.

Paul Bob I agree man. I honestly never listened to classic Metallica before now, largely because I hate Lars Ulrich as a drummer. Not as a person (although I hear he's not the most down to earth dude) but as a drummer. His drumming always felt odd to me, not in a complex way but just in a "weird" one. I now realize two things: - How much of a fool I've been not giving classic Metallica a deep listen - How much Lars was an absolute fucking BEAST back then. I've watched the making of the Black album and he was just a monster with his groove and heaviness, and in this video I mean... holy fuck. When they launch the guitar riff I was like "oh shit, going way to fast... no way Lars can follow", and then he proceeded to pound the shit out of his drums like a caveman on crack. I have a new found respect for Lars and Metallica. Newsted was a monster, Burton was insane and James was a killer songwriter. Still think their new shit (and I'm speaking objectively as a non-Metallica fan) is far below par of some of the "newer" Anthrax, Annihilator, Slayer or Testament.

Greetings from germany. It must have been around late 1984 when i was sitting in front of my radio and listened to the once in a month Metal Show at one of the mainstream radio stations which were on airplay in those days. The guy there told us listeners that METALLICA has released a new record and that he is going to play the first two songs from side number 1. Haven't forgotten his words until today - that we have 2023. Haven't forgotten what happened afterwards: Fight Fire with Fire melted my little radio and afterwards "Ride the Lightning" made me totally freak out. I knew "Kill 'em all" as i bought the record in summer 1984 - being a strong follower afterwards. But what hit my ears at this never forgotten moment is still hard to describe in words. Untill today this record is my ABSOLUTE favourite within the Metallica catalogue. Still banging like hell today - that i am 55 years old. Greater than great!!!!!!

EVERY FAN OF METAL AND HARD CORE GET IN HERE. This is why Metallica is the greatest metal band of all time and always will be. Check out: Lars absolutely on fire, Kirk's amazing rhythm guitar playing, the harmonized lead with James, and the whammy bar dive at the end of the double bass drum solo! Holy crap they are shredding. This is twice as fast as the album. The aggression is unmatched to this day!

Man no matter how many times I listen to this song the last 30 years , everytime it's hits just as fuckin hard as all the other times , possibly one of the best true trash metal songs of album , and album for that matter as well to go along , this album is one son of a bitcb of musical genius , i so badly wish I didn't stop playing guitar in my mid 20's as I so deeply miss the feelings and emotions I used to get while playing along with songs like this and just all their stuff from the first 5 albums , just to play this song once again is reason enough alone for me to start playing again.

I think the REAL die-hard MetallicA fans like me (I am 32 and grew up listening to them since I bought the Puppets tape as a kid) enjoy old and new Metallica. I will say that St. Anger is my least favorite studio album, and I didn't care for S&M very much (however No Leaf Clover is a good song). That being said I absolutely LOVED Load and Re-Load and all the new cover songs they did on Garage Inc. I think for them to put out an album full of covers took some serious BALLS. They are a very selfless band, and even when they got inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, they read a statement about how other bands they knew and loved belong there too. They did change, they did evolve, but I honestly think some of the best work they ever did was on the Load album. Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn both bring my to a higher place. Sure, when I wanna kill somebody and get fired up and lift weights and shred I listen to KEM, RTL, MOP and ...AJFA. In the end if I had a gun to my head and HAD to pick a favorite album, it'd be Master Of Puppets, but everything they've done (especially in the 90s) was amazing. Death Magnetic wasn't my favorite but that's only because it was an album "for the fans" and a "return to form" for the band. With Black album, Load/Re-Load, St. Anger they tried something VERY different for each, and I think they succeeded. Black Album proved that Metallica was more than just another kickass "thrash" metal band like Slayer or Anthrax.. Metallica clearly never forgets their thrash roots, but I love their more modern blues/metal/hard rock sound.

I love every album just like you... but Anthrax isn't another thrash band, I think they're the most different thrash metal band in the big four but I agree with the Slayer thing I think they're the 'model' of thrash metal band... Again, I agree with you in everything but I like Death Magnetic is a good heavy/thrash album also I like St.Anger but I don't want them to be a Nu Metal band and I think they and the fans wanted SOLOS it's an important thing in real heavy metal haha! Sorry Lars!

I like St.Anger, I have a few critics towards it, like overextended songs and no solos, but that's about it, I like everything else about it. I love Load and Reload as well, maybe load a little bit more, S&M was cool, but I don't feel like listening to it often, only no leaf clover, Garage.inc is amazing, I like songs on Garage.inc, that I don't like the originals of. Now the only thing, which I don't even count as a Metallica album is Lou Reed... The lyrics were not even written by James.... and I can't listen to it at all... not for me at all, the instrumental of some of the songs was cool though.

I agree with you. I like all Metallica albums, because they are all good, regardless of the style changes. My favourite are the first 4 albums, but I love the Black Album, Death Magnetic and ReLoad. Load and St Anger are my least favorites, but that doesn't mean i don't like them. I'm tired of metalheads critizicing Metallica like they had a right to do so.

just think about it… they are playing faster than the studio version. James is doing all of that AND singing at the same time. His vocals and hands are completely disconnected, but also connected at the same time in a way that he never goes out of rhythm. It’s actually unbelievable.
