The guitar solo in this song is one of Kirk Hammett's greatest compositions. I've been listening to it ever since I was a kid and it still hits me like the first time I heard it. Also, all sorts of people love Metallica, but their lyrics are especially resonant for introverts. They say the things we don’t know how to say. This is one of the reasons they are so loved.

'The Unforgiven' was written about vocalist/ guitarist James Hetfield's parents... Growing up in a small town in California, James had a tough upbringing in a Christian Science family where doctors and medicine was forbidden - 'only prayer & God would help u heal'...was their mantra and he was routinely abused as a kid if he stepped out of line... At school, he couldn't attend certain classes because of his faith and the kids thought he was a 'freak'... He couldn't play football in school because he needed a doctor's note... His father left the family and his parents divorced... James and his sister would fight constantly and his single mom was overwhelmed. Making matters worse, she was diagnosed w/ cancer and refused treatment because of her faith... She died when James was still a teen. The loss of his parents left James Hetfield w/ a lifelong fear of abandonment... He and his sister were given to the custody of their older half-brother and his sister was kicked out for her outbursts... while James was quiet and reserved. Years later, James wrote songs about his late mom, her faith and her struggle w/ cancer - 'The God that failed'... 'Until it sleeps' ... and the country ballad 'Mama said'... At 18, James left to be on his own... drinking became a huge part of his life. He soon met drummer Lars Ulrich in 1981 and was persuaded to form Metallica w/ him... Going on tour and seeing the world in Metallica gave James new experiences and he eventually realized that his parents were wrong about pretty much everything and he never went back to his parents' faith. However, his alcoholism was a huge problem and caused a lot of problems in Metallica and in his personal life. In 1988, he wrote the song "Dyers' eve"... where he let his parents feel his rage and frustration... 'The Unforgiven' in 1991 was a calmer, darker attitude towards his parents and his upbringing. He eventually 2 sequel songs - 'Unforgiven II' in 1997 was a country ballad 😬by Metallica and he lamented about his relationship w/ his significant other... and 'Unforgiven III' in 2008 where he lamented about himself.

I missed this when it dropped but it showed up in my feed. I thought about what you said about James’ vocals. So, on the verses he’s not singing melodically but with grit and rasp, a style he’s had his whole career. But on the chorus he sings in clean tone, with vocal melodies. When they recorded this album he had that in mind. So he talked to their producer about doing clean singing on some songs, and the guy gave him some mini-lessons in the studio. James wanted to sing. Also, that drum part you loved was played on tom-toms, usually called toms. They have a lower tone and a more percussive feel.

I work out four times a week and I never listen to music - especially not music I like. It’s not worth getting tired of it. Magnus Samuelsson, swedish strongman, said the same. He also loves Metallica. Anyways, this song, The Unforgiven, is pure beauty. Please listen to Orion. My favorite. You can do a live version, but there is an added harmony if you listen to the original. There is a minor third, which technically creates a full chord (I’m a guitar player of 27 years).

This WAS one of their top songs and was played on MTV and the radio all the time. Don't be fooled. Also, the Black Album is their best and most popular album. Many fans will kill me for saying that, but it's true. It's the most musical. You will love EVERY song on it. Master of Puppets, Justice for All are also amazing, but they are a different kind of amazing. They are more for metal heads whereas the Black Album is for music and production quality. Everyone is going to be begging you to listen to songs that are not on the Black Album. Don't be fooled. The Black Album is musical and AMAZING.

An absolute classic, and a little bit of a shakeup of the typical formula by making the chorus softer and more subdued than the verse (in most songs, the chorus is where things get heavier and more powerful). This is the first and most famous of the "Unforgiven Trilogy" of songs, with the others aptly named Unforgiven II and Unforgiven III. Unforgiven and Unforgiven II are most closely related musically, with Unforgiven II using the same chord progression throughout as the chorus of this one, as well as borrowing some melodic elements. Unforgiven III deviates more, though its introduction uses the same progression as the chorus. However, taken together they effectively tell three different parts of the same story. That opening buzzing chord before the guitar kicks in is sampled from Ennio Morricone's legendary title theme to "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly," one of the all-time great Spaghetti Westerns, starring Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, and Lee Van Cleef. Metallica's song, in turn, inspired Eastwood's 1992 Oscar-winning Western, Unforgiven, so it kind of comes full circle.

A lot of purist fans were turned off by the Black album when it came out. I think what it proved was if the music is good, it will find a way to be appreciated. I always find it amusing when people are so single-minded that they can't get around their own mindset. I probably didn't have a problem with it because I enjoy a large variety of music. It makes me think of how Eddie Van Halen wanted to try some different things for Van Halen's sound, but David didn't want any of it. I loved the direction Van Halen went afterward with Sammy Hagar, but I also loved what David Lee Roth did on his own.

I remember you've said once, that Metalheads looks like Hippies with the long hair. But they are far away from it. Heavy Metal was invented at the end of the hippie era. But black sabbath for example had many streetfights in their hood with immigrants and others. The guitar player tony iommi has the black belt in karate. At the punk era, punks and metalheads have beaten up each other for a long time. In USA with Thrash and Glam Metal it was more brutal. Was like one hooligan group fights another group. At the norwegian black metal era in the 90ties people were not only beaten up, some were also killed. You see, normally Metalheads/Rockers are far away from being particism.

Do you recall asking about the dislike for Nickelback; which mostly comes from the dislike for anything mainstream? Well...same goes for others like Metallica. Many of their original fans turned on them when their fifth album was released; for it being "too" mainstream and receiving more radio play. They enjoyed the first four albums because they were not mainstream and the fans latched on to them for being "theirs" in a way. When things become more popular, drawing in more fans, the intimacy fades for the original fans...and they profess their disdain for what they once held dear. I could be completely off...but I do believe this to be a large part of it; the switch and "the turning against."
