Metallica: Hardwired Vs. 72 Seasons (Album Comparison)

This is all my personal opinion. I grew up in the 2000s so naturally my introduction to Metallica was Death Magnetic, which I think is absolutely underrated. To suggest either of these albums are better than any of the original 5 is probably heresy. Either way, I'm glad these albums helped introduce me to metal as a whole, so here's just a little comparison of what I think are the best riffs, songs and videos from each album.
Due to all the songs used, this video is about as likely to get monetized as I am diving into the ocean. I made it for entertainment purposes and nothing else.

If you took the first half of Hardwired + Spit out the Bone and combined it with the best 5 tracks from 72 seasons, you would have an amazing album that would rival anything they did in the 80's. The problem with hardwired was that there were too many weak songs and the problem with 72 seasons imo is that there is literally no variety. Every track has the same tempo and fits the exact same mold. I would have loved to hear some acoustic guitar, some clean guitar parts and way more variety. With that said, both Hardwired and 72 Seasons are great metal albums.
@TMPOUZI
@TMPOUZI Жыл бұрын
I disagree about the tempo on the new album. We literally have doom moments and thrashy moments all over the place. Also we have for the first time in their career so much experimentation with half time or double time. So I don't get your comment. I agree that both albums are good though and I prefer that newer one just because of the better riffs
@Kenjames10

With "variety" you might mean lack of uniqueness. Every song on 72 Seasons pretty much is long intro/verse/chorus/verse/chorus/solo/chorus/outro.

I absolutely agree. I'd make a couple more alterations but the dream combination album between these two for me would be: Disc 1 1) Hardwired 2) Atlas Rise 3) Sleepwalk My Life Away 4) Moth Into Flame 5) You Must Burn 6) Halo on Fire Disc 2 1) 72 Seasons 2) Room of Mirrors 3) Too Far Gone 4) Lux Aeterna 5) Shadows Follow 6) Spit Out the Bone I think this would arguably be a top 3 album.

The easiest way for me to describe why I like 72 seasons more: I only hit repeat on 2-3 songs on Hardwired. On 72, I've hit repeat on more than half the album. Hardwired might peak slightly higher, but 72 has way more bangers. But also, I just love this band. Dig both albums.

It's too early to tell for me. My initial reaction to HTSD was far more positive than to 72 seasons, but it's growing on me, at least some of the songs. But then again, if there was a song on the same level as Spit out the Bone, Halo on Fire or Moth into Flame, I'd like to think that it would have grabbed me right away. And one thing is safe to say even from this comparison: When it comes to the solos, HTSD blows 72 seasons out of the water. Which is really saying something, because overall they weren't particularly great on HTSD either.

I'm a fan of all Metallica. I don't know if I can make comparisons like that. But I think I can say there seems to be improvement and perhaps just the simple fact that the 4 of them have been together long enough now they know what sounds good with what they bring to the table shall we say.

Man, after listening to the whole 72 Seasons album, I just realized how empty Hardwired To Self-Destruct sounded compared to their current one.

Bro if you’re gonna include a part for “Heaviest Riffs” you gotta give respect to that breakdown riff from “Am I Savage?”

72S is a good album, and possibly the most confident album they’ve made since the black album. This album is smooth as shit. The problem is, there’s so much that doesn’t stick, even after multiple listens. The album just doesn’t “pop” if you know what I mean. There’s no instant classic on it. Most of it kinda blends together. It almost feels like a computer wrote these songs lol, it’s like…TOO smooth. Still, I like the title track, Crown of Barbed Wire, If Darkness Had a Son, Chasing Light and Room of Mirrors. Too Far Gone is growing on me, same with Shadows Follow. The rest is pretty meh. Overall I give it a 3/5. It’s solid. Better than Load, Reload and St Anger. Hardwired is better.

1. 72 Seasons 2. Shadows Follow (Tough one...love Atlas Rise!) 3. Screaming Suicide (Now That We're Dead has such a groove) 4. Moth into Flame 5. Dream No More 6. Halo on Fire (Lux Æterna is great and has really grown on me over time!) 7. Crown of Barbed Wire 8. Chasing Light 9. If Darkness Had a Son 10. Too Far Gone 11. Room of Mirrors 12. Tie (Love both tunes. May lean towards Inamorata at the moment) 8.5-3.5 in favour of 72 Seasons. The second half of Hardwired brings it down for me. I feel 72 Seasons is a more consistent record overall.

A fun thing to think about is that some of or a lot of the songs on 72 seasons were probably contenders when they were finalizing hardwired but just didn’t make the cut. Think I read somewhere that hardwired had over 40 songs written for it and they had to chose only enough for the album

Its a different experience listening to the new stuff when you are so versed in all the classic albums because its pretty much a rehash of those old riffs which can sound a bit rubbish regurgitated like this but also quite nostalgic but for those hearing Metallica fresh it may be a better experience!

72 seasons captures more of the classic metallica sound and attitude, has better vocals and lyrics, and the songs more memorable. So for me not only is it better than HTSD, in my opinion its up there with their best albums ever

Confusion? I'm confused about how it made the album. Did I stroke out, or was Lux Aeterna completely absent from this video? That song got me really excited for this album and the rest was kind of disappointing in comparison.

I think that the production sounds very similar on both albums. Put the best songs on each album onto one album and jtll be the best one since and justice. The black albums first half is classic but i couldnt care less about the second half if i tried(i feel the same about hardwired, not 72 seasons though, every song is a banger)

If Hardwired had fewer songs, maybe it would be better than it is. I'm talking about Am I Savage and Murder One, songs that didn't captivate me so much, they could have put Lords of Summer inside the official album. In 72 Seasons I felt that all the songs are necessary for the concept of the album, so I think it's an evolution.

to me they're two halves of the same album. if you made a playlist of 12 songs from these 2 records and went back to 2015 and gave it to yourself - musically you'd never guess they were from two different albums 6 years apart

Makes me reflect on their riffs, some sound a bit like Iron Maiden just faster, many sound Black Sabbath influenced, some of Lars drumming sounds inspired by Motörhead and other riffs sound inspired by Judas Priest. Whether it’s conscious or subconscious it’s there. There is nothing wrong with that all art movements borrowed something from art that went before. I know Metallica like Iron Maiden or at least liked them. I remember seeing them at the Hammersmith Odeon once and at the end they did ‘Killers’, ‘The Prowler’ and an almost comedy version of ‘Run to the hills’. That was a great concert. I was awake for a couple of days after it and my ears were ringing for almost the entire time. ‘Speed kills but who’s dying’?
