Metallica, IMO, is a genre unto itself like Pink Floyd. They are heavy metal, but so much more. Great musicality, vocals and lyrics. These guys are about 15 years after Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, but picked up the banner in style and held it for almost 30 years now.

To ease you in to Yes (prog rock - like PF but more ecclectic) try Rounabout, You and I. To ease you in to longer songs (that will melt you) try “The revealing science of God” Close to the Edge is another level after that! Also Genesis - Mad Man Moon (easier) then Firth of Fifth Rush - Tom Sawyer, Roll the Bones (easier) up to “2112” Queen - Don’t Stop me Now, Innuendo, March of the Black Queen The 70’s were the best. For other rock and prog choices (non-metal), also check out Styx, Journey, Steely Dan, Eagles, Jethro Tull, Aerosmith, Supertramp, Boston, Allan Parsons Project, and the list goes on and on…. Mark, these aren't the best ones. Let's put it this way: everything up until the "Black Album" (before even better) was good. Everything after that was kind of mediocre. If you want to do a proper trip (and I mean it...) *listen to Orion or to "The Call of Ktulu"* (where Chtulu was "A monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind.", invented by the writer H.P. Lovecraft back in 1928 and part of his cosmogony).

@@brainsqueezereactions I'm not saying that you should not listen to something, only that the most representative for Metallica are those of the first 4 albums, and it doesn't come from just me: the presence of Cliff Burton (bass) that tragically died during a tournée, was making them really much better. So if you want to know them and the reason they got so much following, those are the ones that show you that. And, since you enjoyed so much the Pink Floyd rollercoaster, Orion is probably the one that will give you those feelings, but from Metallica (and The Call of Ktulu too) :)

@@brainsqueezereactions what theses people are all saying that insist that the first four albums are SO MUCH better, is that when Metallica first started and were young me , they did mostly thrash metal…..super high BPM’s…..and that’s what fans who were young when Metallica broke like. As an older fan who discovered them recently, I prefer this, Enter Sandman, and others like that which bang, but have slower BPM. Starting with their Black Album. Thrash just agitates me.
