***** No, all of Kirk's guitars are heavily modified with custom guts and pickups. Also, he will often have the originals shipped to him with custom tuners and hardware. If he destroys a guitar on stage, it's a replica from the dozens he has stored in the back. If he's playing on a record, you can be sure its not at all the same guitar you're going to find in stores.

A live cover is never going to sound as good as a studio cut. It's pretty much impossible. But, there are tons of guitarists who can play any Metallica part just as good as James/Kirk can live. Of course there will be subtle differences from player to player.

What's up with the hate on Kirk? Im no huge Metallica fan but Kirk do have energy, feel and emotion in his playing. The guitar solo he played in San Diego 92 blew me away and yes i know about other guitarists but Kirk is really one of a kind. Definetly one of the best guitarist out there. Music is about having fun and entertain, to bad that most people only focusing on how advanced it sounds. John Bonham (One of the most legendary drummers ever), Jimmy Page, Slash and so on never took lessons or used metronomes etc. They played with feel. "If you play technical you'll just sound like everyone else, it's originality that counts" - John Bonham.
