He's a phenomenal pianist. Some piano parts during the performance worked very well, other fell completely flat or out of place. The rehearsal part where you pretyt much only hear Lang Lang sound great though, that probably says something as well. But I'm a little saddened by some reactions, so narrowminded (even beforehand), at least these guys are down to do shit like this.

I think Lang Lang sounds great in this, he really understands how to combine the piano with the guitar and metal rhythms - this is why he is soloing all the way through, by the way, if he didn't the pad accompaniment would get way too busy and become a mess of distorted sound - this is what separates Lang Lang from most other well-known musicians in both the classical and mainstream genres; he understands fully the theory and inner-workings of music and can work that into any genre fusion creatively. Most well-known musicians are masters of their instrument or style but have no idea of the theory and cannot fuse it or change it to make something creatively innovative or unique. Classical works particularly well with metal because they both have very complex textures with polyrhythms and polyphonic melodies. If you take a look at the actual classical and 20th century eras of music (not just instrumental music, the genuine classical and 20th century artists such as Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi, dvojak etc) you can see many similarities in melody, rhythm and choral parts. Lang Lang can also use his sound in many different ways for different tones without changing the instrument at all, similar to the guitars.

I'm going to preface my comment by saying: as classical piano musician who has performed music at the University level, who has think outside the box originality, and loves just about every genre of music as long as there is talent present, I'm going to put it like this: Out of Grammy compilation's that performed that night, Metallica & Lang Lang broke the mold and put an epic performance together melded with fresh, new, raw musical ideas fused together like soft (piano) and hard (forte) steel to forge a new, state of the art, cutting edge style of music. My only lament is that they will probably never play together again to shred and produce this yin & yang chiaroscuro sound.

I really liked this collaboration, i think metallica has always been about making something new or different and they went for it and it was very good, it's just people don't appreciate how the piano arrangement is worked, it does not have to necessarily be a exact copy of the guitars, actually those are the best. It would be really cool if they put out something with a good mixing though.

Jaymz:yea Larz:based on what! Jaymz: your count. Lol. Idk why I find that funny. Anyways, I liked the piano. Added a darker, dungeons and dragons, evil thing to it. It was nice. I haven't heard the orchestra album yet(saw a comment about it. Thanks for who said that), so it nice to hear one as a orchestra sounding song. Should they make it a more comment thing, FUCK NO!
