I was at this concert, somewhere in the upper row, I was a little afraid of the sound quality as I made bad experiences with that in the past when having a high place in an open stadium. Metallica came on stage, opened with Creeping Death, the sound was fucking fantastic during the entire shows on both nights. Thank you guys for making this an unforgettable concert, even for those who can't afford the luxury of inner circle or even Snakepit.

Interesting, I was in the lower seated area and especially the with second drumkit on night 2 the sound was absolutely horrible. All we could hear was drums and bass, night 1 also wasn't too great but a little better.

I was in the Snake Pit and the sound there was absolutely first class. I have never had such a good sound at any concert. Robert's bass was also clearly audible throughout. I read later that Meyer Sound has designed a new sound concept, where each speaker can be controlled individually, regarding volume and delay. At the Big Four in the Schalke Arena it was unfortunately something completely different. There was unfortunately very much reverb to hear.

I was at the Volksparkstadion on both nights, in the upper ranks and i was absolutely underwhelmed by the sound, i must say. I never heard MetallicA sounding so bad. And i was at some shows, in the past. The drums and the bass were always there but overpowering and delayed, the vocals also, although hardly understanable. But, there was nearly no guitar, only some lead guitar was coming through. It sounded like they have tuned down the songs even more. I never was so disappointed on a MetallicA show than this time, both nights! Period!!! €175,- for a phenomenal light show, but hardly that competing sound experience. And, THAT was what i was there for.

Sat far side middle of the stands for both shows and they really nailed it! I really had a great experience even in those seats and not for a second felt like I was missing out. Quite the opposite actually, it was great to have such a good overview of the whole stage! Sound was superb (aided by some good linear earplugs), clear vocals, great bass presence and awesome kick drums, guitars were a bit set back but still cutting through the mix enough. Overall two of the absolute best shows, of not even the best shows I have ever attended. Only Heilung really rivals the audio especially, but they were in a tiny space compared to this, so that's a lot easier.

588 speakers is INSANE. I wonder what the Average amount of PA for bands is
@FOH3663 Жыл бұрын
Just depends on the venue, but a baseline example; The main hang left and right, maybe 16 count is the most you'd see, likely fewer. An big sub element would be nearly as many subs as tops. Add maybe a handful of front fill. That's about 70 boxes, and that's a big ass powerful show. Most wouldn't have this much. But some even more. The numbers can add up fast. Stadium end stage shows often deploy outfill hangs for the sides, and delay towers for distance. You can double the 16 tops per side, and double gang a PA. Dave Rat double hung stadium PA for the Chili Peppers. He had duplicate PA tops, each hang right next to each other, drums and vocals in one and guitar and bass in the other. Benefits were reduction in intermod, greater headroom, resulted in greater clarity, intelligibility. How many cabinets do I need? How much money you got?!

@andrew6978 Жыл бұрын
@@SuperPol1981 Well yeah but they all still need mics. I just don't get how they get to 192 inputs. Grouping helps but you still need to mix the groups.
@SuperPol1981 Жыл бұрын
@andrew6978 probably some exaggeration involved. Because conviently, 192 happens to be a typical number of max inputs on a certain system. So it could very well be that they only use 173, but 192 is the nearest ”system” number. But let’s count for a bit. He said 30 per drum kit. That’s 120. Guitars: if the still use the same setup as previous tours, it’s 2 axefx-systems per distortion guitar (one is backup), and I guess these are stereo outputs. So 4 per guitar, that’s 12. 132. Then for cleans, I think it was only one separate system for james, and then there’s the acoustic for unforgiven and fade. Let’s say both 2 channels, so 4 again. Total 136. Then some effect loop for vocals, inputs for the intro tapes, the tape for the prayer in sandman (I think it is easier to mix with the band playing when having this on a separate channel from other tapes). Guessing these are all unnecessary stereo connections (but mixed mono of course), so add 6, total 142. Then some technical/utility inputs: a house announcer (”kirks wah seems to be on fire, but please don’t riot people”), a talkback mic for the mixer that only the band hears, a talkback mic to give cues to other crew, a click or countdown track, ... Let’s say at least 4, so 146. Then, since they record every show and you need to capture some audience, you need some audience mics (also is great when using in ear monitoring). Let’s say 4 again. 150. That leaves 42 channels for microphones. Should be plenty, but I can see that you’d need at least a 192-channel setup. Can’t do it with only 128 or 160.

You can have all the technology and greatness on paper, but in the end the reality is still not good. lots of people have been complaining about the bad FOH sound, distorted; with lots of echo etc... I'm not talking about the people in the pit or around/close to the stage, but the people sitting high up in the stadiums. Unfortunately even your technology seems not enough to fix this. I guess it's just the nature of the physics involved with the shape of the stadiums and sound waves bouncing of the stadium walls etc... That being said, even if I had only 'cheap' tickets for Metallica, sitting way back and up in these stadiums, I would still expect to have a good sound level...

There is one thing about the Johan Cruyff Arena that is common knowledge about it. The sound is horrible because of all the reverb you have in that stadium. I was there only once for a concert a couple of years ago. I noticed they used a very simple solution to get over the sound bouncing everywhere. They dialed the volume way up. That my ears didn't fool me was confirmed this year when I talked with a sound tech from my local theatre. He had it confirmed by a sound tech who worked with a band in the JC Arena. So I am not surprised the show wasn't sounding perfect in Amsterdam. The Arena is just not where you want to fine tune a system like this.
