It's a shame Lars and James don't like bass much. It's always really down in the mix, with the exception being The Black Album. Their other instrumental, "Call of Ktulu" has Cliff doing some wild things on the bass with his wah and effects but a lot of it is drowned out in the final mix.

Geebz, do yourself a favor and look up the isolated bass track for this song. It’s on KZbin, and it shows the incredible range of sounds and textures Cliff contributed to this song. A lot of the portions I assumed were guitar are actually Cliff’s bass.

After the last few albums had just about demolished their legacy as an epic band, this was the first step on the path to redemption. Even though Orion is a masterpiece and extremely important song to me, my dad and my relatives, you *need* to listen their other fully instrumental piece: Call of Ktulu (Cthulhu is mispronounced intentionally). Both versions, the original and the S&M version which was performed with SF philharmonica so insanely intense and creates the perfect atmosphere when the inspiration for the track is H.P. Lovecraft's pantheon. EDIT; At the end of the song you said how the Orion must have been a blast to see live. Well, they played it first time live waaaay way after. Robert Trujillo was the first bassist Metallica gave permission to play it live. Personally I've seen Orion once live and I won't be lying, I cried.

For me Orion is an example of the more grand composition style that was basically the entire Justice album (my favorite incidentally). And in Orion you get the exposition/statement of the theme, then the slow movement in a triple meter, then recapitulation.

Edit: I also feel like this sorta jamming thing and layering and building the sound so organically while never having the song be predictable is what laid the foundation for bands like Tool to really thrive and put it all out there and experiment like they do on their later albums.

Loved this! Would want to recommend Dissection's masterpiece "where dead angels lie".

Man, I have waited so long to see you do this video, and I was not disappointed :) The real shame about this masterpiece of work, is that Cliff never actually got to ever play it live, because I know it would have been killer. For a great, and clear, example of cliff's talent at what he can make the bass do, check out "(Anesthesia) pulling teeth" or the tribute version performed at S&M2 (Symphony & Metallica) by Scott Pingle, where Scott used an electric symphony bass, and recreated Cliff's pedal board to achieve a true sound to the tribute he performed :)

15:07 Oh, but they only played live for the first time when Robert joined. Many years after Master of Puppets, sadly :) But mainly due to Jason's sense of respect for Cliff. A great breakdown, as always!

if i'm correct they never planned on playing it live but when rob joined he pushed and pushed to play it live and when they did you can see how much respect he has for cliff playing it!

@@dead_frets I think it's something like that. The first time they played it was with Rob and he did have a lot of influence. I think that Jason didn't wish to play it, as he saw it solely as Cliff's song.

Also at the middle section Cliff recorded two different bass tracks. One playing the back rythm and the other track is doing the third harmony of the guitar melody.

There are youtube clips of the isolated bass tracks and ones with isolated bass and drums. Fun to check out to hear all of cliff

Cliff actually does 2 solos in this. The first one you thought was Kirk, was Cliff. He did this thing with the bass that made it sound like a guitar, really amazing. The second solo by Cliff starts at 13:34.
