This is from the movie "Johnny got his gun". In an explosion, he lost both arms, both legs, his eyes, his hearing and his lower jaw and tongue. The doctors thought he was brain dead so they kept him alive for experiments. When they discovered he was actually conscious, they hid him away from the world. With no hearing, no sight and the inability to move, talk or touch anything, he is a universe of one. His pain is the only world he has now.

Metallica actually own the rights to this film now. When they were working out how much they’d have to spend to acquire the footage, they learned it would just be cheaper to buy the rights in the long run. curious why that haven’t done anything with it.

Heavy Metal music can sound angry & almost depressing to anyone who hasn't listened to it in depth. This genre addresses things that can be very dark or disturbing, but by giving these emotions a voice, it actually helps people who may be feeling depressed or angry just with the simple fact that someone else has portrayed similar feelings in such a powerful way. Music can help you turn your anger & trauma into strength & determination. That is so powerful!

I lived this song. Had a car accident when I was 17. I had 3 of my very good friends died, I was paralyzed from a broken neck. When I woke up in the hospital I had a respirator in my throat so I couldn't talk. Couldn't feel my lower body below the mid chest due to the paralysis, my hands and arms were tied down so I couldn't move them and pull out the wires and tubes. I could only see straight up as my neck was in traction I could only hear. I heard this song and I instantly related, it came out very close to the time my accident happened back in 1984. Thankfully I was able to get off the respirator, move my hands and arms again. Still in a wheelchair but in a much better place than I was at the time. I know the horror of wishing for death because you can't stand the moment. I was lucky enough to get through it but damn was it hard. Still I would rather be me than the driver, he had to live with the mental anguish.

Life comes at you fast and it don't come equipped with airbags. I went into respiratory failure and was put into a medically induced coma. I woke up a week later not knowing where i was. I was tied down with IVs in both arms, a catheter and a ventilator down my throat. Every time they tried to take me off the ventilator i would stop breathing. That was last nov 1 and I'm ok now but now i have a DNR in place. Sometimes dead is not the worst thing to be. Prayers to you...🙏

@roger5322 and to you, sorry you had to go through that. I have been seriously considering doing one. I do have a health care proxy, puts my sister in charge if I'm incapacitated. Being single with no kids she and my other sister and nieces and nephews are the only family I have now. God bless you I'm not very religious but do believe there's more at work than just science in the world.

Growing up in the ghetto, I was bombarded with hip hop and only hip hop. My friend's older brother introduced me to Metallica, Zeppelin, and Hendrix. I may have been the only one bumpin' this song in my neighborhood with dual 15" Cerwin Vega subwoofers- not everyone liked it, but I spread the gospel nonetheless. Discovering Metallica was like discovering a drug, and I've been hooked for over 30 years.

This was the first video I remember seeing on MTV. The movie in the background of the video is called Johnny Got His Gun. The soldier is blown up by a landline and isn’t able to communicate. He’s locked in his own brain. The movie includes the incomparable Jason Robards. This song really hit me harder when I was involved in war and it changes you in more ways than you can ever imagine. The depression of coming James and thinking nothing makes sense when you can’t turn off the switch you have to flip to survive. Then we get a slap on the back thank you for your service and forgotten. Were told the VA is here to help but then refuse to help. I’ve been a fan of Metallica since 1984 when I was 8 and my buddy got his dad’s vinyl of Metallica and I was hooked. These guys, IMO, are much better live than they are in studio.

The story is from book I read in high school in the mid-70s: JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN by Dalton Trumbo, a book published in 1939, and had a film made of it in 1971, at the height of the Vietnam War and its protests.

I believe that the "..And Justice for All" album is the best instrumental album" from Metallica. Also its funny to see James voice the way he singshave changed through the Years. Fun fact, this is Metallica's 1st music Video, and some hardcore fans at the time criticized that Metallica had "sold out" for making a Music Video to come on MTV. Anoter fun fact, is James Hetfeld is fan of Westerns, and to this day every Metallica Concert starts with "The Ecstacy of Gold" from the Movie "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly". I will be the boring one and recommend another one of their fan favorites "Master Of Puppets". If you wish to see another great Music Video I can recommend "the day that never comes"
