This is from the movie "Johnny got his gun". In an explosion, he lost both arms, both legs, his eyes, his hearing and his lower jaw and tongue. The doctors thought he was brain dead so they kept him alive for experiments. When they discovered he was actually conscious, they hid him away from the world. With no hearing, no sight and the inability to move, talk or touch anything, he is a universe of one. His pain is the only world he has now.

The movie is based on the book by Dalton Trumbo. Trumbo was blacklisted by Hollywood and labeled a Communist sympathizer. The FBI raided his home and then demanded he turn in the names of everyone he associated with. The government banned his book from all public libraries. This was during the Vietnam War. If it was today, the FBI would call him a Russian sympathizer, and his book would be banned from KZbin and Facebook in the name of anti racism and anti hate. Example: I'd say "there was literally a million people there" to emphasize that it wasn't just a lot of people, but an actual million. Understand? Also start a sentence with a capital letter, it's an easy way to clean up your text. As for your cognition, that's a little more tricky so I can't help you there. Imagine being blind, deaf and unable to speak after all your faculties have been destroyed by landmine, your arms and legs all cut off, and when you wake up, you have no way to tell. All you know is blankness, darkness, silence. You have no way to interact with anyone or anything around you. All you can do is think to yourself. But what is there to even think about that could ever make any difference? You're locked away in this military hospital and potentially forgotten by the entire world. That is the experience of this soldier that this movie is all about and is what disturbed Metallica so much that they had to write this track about it. If you ever watch the film or read the book, make sure you give yourself time and support to recover from it. It's possibly one of the most depressing war stories you'll ever know.

I've lost brothers in combat and I've been injured myself. So yes, this is a very emotional song and subject matter to me. I suffer from PTSD and most days are quite hard to go through them. But, I'm proud to have served my country and wouldn't change anything. Channels like yours help me take a break from my headspace and it's very much appreciated. Thank you Stacey and please keep doing what you do the way you do it. Sadly, concerning this album, it wasn't well received by fans. Original bassist Cliff Burton had tragically died when their tour bus crashed during the tour of the previous album and other members were not ready to replace him so fast. So, Jason Newsted became the new bassist and they made life for him very hard. According to Lars himself, they basically cut down drastically on the bass in the mix so the album sounds like crap. The videos are ok 'cause you get a different audio but the album... it's too bad because that album has so many good tracks. Jason Newsted left after a few albums because things really didn't gel during his tenure with the band. Now Robert Trujillo is the man and he's quite good and the band is much better in their heads. Saw them last year and they sound amazing!

From Wikipedia: "One" is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica, released as the third and final single from the band's fourth studio album, ...And Justice for All (1988). Written by band members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, the song portrays a World War I soldier who is severely wounded-arms, legs and jaw blown off by a landmine, blind, deaf, and unable to speak or move-begging God to take his life. In the music video, attempting to communicate with the hospital staff he jolts in his bed, spelling SOS in Morse code. A video for the song was introduced in January 1989 on MTV. Shot in black and white by director Michael Salomon, the video's story is intercut with scenes taken from the 1971 anti-war film Johnny Got His Gun. Due to routinely being required to pay royalty fees to continue showing the music video, Metallica bought the rights to the film. The video was ranked at number one on MTV soon after its introduction.

This was the first song by Metallica ever played on commercial radio stations, and it took Metallica 7 years to come out with their first Music video and this was it. the whole album was written with an open wound, the death of bassist Cliff Burton . verry fast paced full of anger and aggression. They didn't want to just make a trite video with girls and drugs cars and all of the cliches that most "hair" metal bands released at this time. They wanted to make a point and the book and movie Johnny got his gun made perfect visuals for the lyrics Hetfield wrote for the song, with some additional thought provoking images. I was further cemented as a die hard member of the Metal Melitia , & am still a proud member after 41 years.

Hey Stacey, thanks again! Wow "One" is such an iconic track by Metallica. The band's transition after Cliff Burton's tragic passing was really quick, with Jason Newsted joining as the new bass player in less than a month. Their "Metallica $5.98 Garage Days Re-Revisited The EP" featured covers of punk bands and even though it only has five songs, it's one of the strongest EPs I've ever heard. It served as a great precursor to the much-anticipated "And Justice for All" album. Fans, including myself, were eagerly waiting for this new Metallica album, hoping for something as amazing as "Master of Puppets" or "Ride the Lightning." "One" left me speechless the first time I heard it, and the whole album is just pure metal and a different sound altogether. I believe "One" was Metallica's first music video for TV, or MTV at the time. We were all crazy about this album! I've seen them live a couple of times, but that was in a different era. In 2021, Elton John mentioned in an interview that "One" was the best song ever written for him. It's great to hear such praise, especially from an artist of a different music genre, and I also happen to love Elton John. They ended up collaborating on some work, which is awesome. Thanks again, Stacey, for the great reaction! These are songs I don't listen to very often these days-I have too many on my mind! I save them for special occasions. I was 17 when I got this album. Love those days! Thanks again, love your channel, can't wait for the next one. Cheers! Keep it up!

This is the song that solidified my love of Metallica. I kinda came late, missed the release of “Master of Puppets” etc, but found them after this.❤

this song was inspired from a world war one movie called Johnny get your gun. the movie is about how a soldier was injured and had lost everything his sihgt, hearing, arms, and legs along with having his face disfigured as well. very emotional movie.

"I'm sure it reasonates with so many soldiers out there.." You have no idea. The emotional scars of war take decades to heal. The song perfectly captures the emotional pain of PTSD. My pain was made tolerable by discovering the mercy of Jesus...20 years later. The physical pain, emotional trauma, anger and regret no longer master me, but it does sit there in the corner of my mind. It has no power over me any more. Being saved was an incredible mercy. I love this song because it captures the emotion trauma of war...and unless you have been there, you wouldn't understand without this small window into that complexity.

The most complete metal song ever made. The music promoted a whole gamut of emotions...James at the top of his game with that growling voice of his, the many transitions in beat, rhythm, and style, from flat out classical in the beginning to the death march in percussion, and onward to the internal screaming matched by the lead guitar, to the grinding beat of a war machine...in search of its next victim(s) in the another human conflict in the future. This is definitely art transcending not just the metal genre, but music as a whole for a generation.

I put myself in Johnny’s mind when listening to One. My first thoughts are like the light music, trying to figure things out. And the more I figure out, the stronger the music gets, the stronger the emotions get, etc..sometimes brings me to tears b/c there have been times in my life where I’ve felt like that

This song and the music video are something that makes me scared. Truly scared to my bone. I love and fear this song, video, and the story behind it.

This is such a genius piece of art. Listen to the machine gun fire in the into and then the drum transition in the middle then the immediate reference to Morse code which can sound the same. This was a collaboration of super talented people.

You should check out a live version of this, it totally goes off. Being in a concert crowd for this song is amazing.

Stacey, you understand a lot more about music than you give yourself credit for! I think I must have seen every YT reaction to this song, and it's sad just how many reactors have no concept of what it's about. Your ability to break down the song as well as the video your first time seeing it is truly admirable. I've seen this video literally thousands of times and I still pick up little tidbits thar I hadn't noticed. This is the type of video to be revisited over and over. Loving your channel and keep up the refreshingly good work.
