I believe he used a spector bass on this album, they have a pretty solid tone. So a bass with a harder wood, P/J pickups (active), and a sans amp bass driver would get you somewhere near.

Almost every rock & metal song has 2 blended basses, one the direct injection (DI) signal going to a distortion pedal, and the other through a cabinet, but I never noticed this in the studio song.

Yep, baritone guitar overdub in this one. But interestingly there's an outtake from the making-of video in which Bob Rock mentions samples in addition to the DI, miked and "boombox" tracks. You can also hear some octave doubling in the bass in this video..esp. noticeable in the choruses when the bass has to play higher notes. Don't know if that's the sample bass or just a subharmonic effect. But the overall effect is beefy AF!

It's not uncommon for a singer to record a "scratch track" for the other band members to play along to as they record. What you're hearing is bleed from that recording into the microphones that recorded the bass/drums.
