Same thing happened to me when I first heard Metallica in 1991. I was 14. So bitter, frustrated, angry, ready to destroy everything, including myself...till I realized someone else understood and felt my pain. Here I am, 43, married over 20 years, 6 kids, and in ministry. BUT, I'll never forget Metallica. My wife and I were at the 9/6 Symphony show. We said when we heard the first show we couldn't wait for them to do another and when they did, we were going. We never dreamed it would be 20 years later, but it was absolutely amazing experience - one of the best of our lives. I would imagine your experience and mine could be repeated almost endlessly with this band. They have been the friend of three generations of fans now. Remarkable. And its crazy to me that a lot of us really struggled with St. Anger when it came out. It was by far the MOST un-Metallica for a lot of us. But time has served to show how important this album really is in the history of the band. I now only have the highest regard for it. It's not the album we wanted, but its the album the band - and especially James - needed. And it has had a huge impact on a lot of people. I'm glad to see it getting more love these days, even by me. Glad you're well :)

@helltoupee66644 жыл бұрын
This song is seriously important to the evolution of James Hetfield as we know him today . If St Anger was a turd , and a lot of people think of it as that . I don’t , but whatever . AWMH was a cherry bomb MetallicA accidentally swallowed . James had to get this song out . And I’m happy we have it .
@Rickkelley3654 жыл бұрын
So true. I was just commenting to someon else what a heartbreaker St. Anger was to me back then. I just didn't get it. And it made me so sad because I connected with literally every other album. Now, I get it. I really get where they were. It wasn't the album I wanted, it was just the album that had to happen. Its what James needed. And though I don't like it, I realize now that had Jason not left and had this album not been made, there would be no Metallica today. Now, I absolutely love the album. It is an important piece of their story, and this version is a beautiful moment of redemption and clarity.
@soflsteel7774 жыл бұрын
@@Rickkelley365 I never thought of it like that TBH. But if Jason being the sacrificial lamb for Metallica to stay together and make Death Magnetic and Hardwired then I'm actually OK with that. Unforgiven 3 and Spit on the Bone are 2 of my favorite songs.
@Rickkelley3654 жыл бұрын
SoFLsteel777 Unforgiven 3 might just make my top 5. It’s my favorite of the trilogy. We actually flew out to see them in SF last year with the symphony and I just hoped they would put the symphony behind that song. It seemed made for it. That was an awesome moment. Aside, the Metallica story can be told by the bass players. 1) If Ron McGovney hadn’t left, they may have never pursued Cliff. Cliff almost singlehandedly solidified and enhanced Metallica’s musical ability and left his indelible mark on metal history. 2) If Cliff hadn’t died, Lars would have been dumped. It’s well documented now that the band was trying to find a way to dump Lars once they finished the MoP tour. 3) Cliff’s death and Jason’s presence provided the creative and emotional fuel to launch Metallica out of the underground and into the mainstream. Commercially, it was gold. Personally, it was a train wreck for all of them, including Jason, the only one who wasn’t completely awestruck with himself. He saw the band for what it was. Amazing, but utterly toxic. He saw what they couldn’t see. He left. They had to deal with it. 4) Had Jason not left, no St. Anger. Many (including me) would say or did say, it’s the album that should have never been made. But it’s the post-Jason leaving album. It’s the NO BASS PLAYER album. How weird. It’s the no solo album. It’s the stop it with the snare album. But looking back, it’s the stripped down album, and that’s exactly where and who they were. You listen to these songs live and wow. They’re ridiculously good. Had they not made this album Metallica would be no more. Jason made it happen. That album is the remnants of the mess he left. That’s what he was hearing while the rest of us were hearing everything else. 5) Rob Trujillo is the consummate steady guy. Maturity, skill beyond skill, energy, entertainment, no frills, and sincere friendship. He really outclasses them all as a musician. He doesn’t rock the boat. He’s not as musically forceful as Cliff, but incredibly talented. They married up when they got Rob. They paid Rob $1M just to sign. That was the beginning of healing. In my opinion, they should have invited Jason to play with them one song on S&M2. Maybe they did. Who knows. I think that would have been a touching moment of redemption for them all. It was a missed opportunity to mend fences with their darker (bass) side. Lyrically and emotionally, Metallica is the story of James Hetfield. Historically, it is the story of 2 bass players, then a bass player but no bass, then no bass player at all, then a fill in, then finally, a third, bass player. That’s how I see it. Believe it or not, I have other interests hahah but no other band is more interesting or has been personally impactful in my life the last 30 years. It will be a sad day when the ride is over. Looking forward to a drive in concert Saturday and maybe some new music in 2021 if we’re lucky :)

@@Rickkelley365 Damn now that is what I call a break down. Thank you for taking the time to share all of that. So I just cant put together a top 5 or 10 or whatever list because the songs are each great in their own right. The Unforgiven trilogy; each song great but different and awesome in their own regard. How do you compare the sounds of a Four Horsemen with King Nothing. Lightening with I disappear. And so on. Unforgiven 3 is one of if not my favs because it is such a great combination of things. Obviously its a trilogy song which IDK of any other bands that have done that. Piano intro which was different than the first 2. Guitar hits, lyrically powerful and IMHO Hammets best solo. As far as Jason with S&M2 that wouldve been awesome, but from what I understand, he has rejoined the band and played bass with Robert too. Maybe they just wanted it to be their own thing I guess. As far as Lars, he seemed all about the brand and making money. From the hair styles, which i still dont understand how people can hate on a band for a hair do but I digress, to the music videos, going mainstream seemed to be all him and James was probably not the one to wanna fight him on it. Kirk is like the most "IDGAF just give me a guitar" I've ever seen. But it took care of each of them and their families so I dont fault them for it. Rob really impressed me on the making of All Nightmare Long with the flamenco playing. He is so multi talented in how he plays, Im glad they paid that man! Now there is word they want to do their best album in 30 years next. This, I am looking forward to and hopefully James stays healthy to be able to complete it.

@@sam8404 there was no time to mix it properly. Mixing band and orchestra really takes time, there's a lot of stuff to do with so many instruments (equalizing frequencies, separatings and adjusting tuning on some vocals, placing different sounds on different speakers.... I saw it on cinema, it sounded no clear at all to me. Now this mixing is killer, you can hear the bass, the acoustic guitars, string session from the orchestra, clarinets (that's a difficult part because it runs at the same frequencies than voices), all so clear. I hope that they put a Atmos mix no the Blu-Ray, that would be fantastic.
