It seems like people that dislike load and reload keeps comparing it to thrash metal albums. These albums are hard rock albums and they are great from a production and song writing perspective.

I've always told people to forget that they're listening to Metallica when they're listening to Load/Reload. If any other band without a history of thrash metal made those two albums they'd be considered great albums.

There are a couple other songs on the record that come close to recapturing the classic 80’s Metallica feel. The first six tunes plus this one (which is the last song on the album) are all pretty good. It’s that middle batch of songs that I’m not a huge fan of.

Dude, this was the first time I really headbanged to Metallica in a long time. The entire album does not sound like this track but it is a solid album overall. The vast majority of the tracks fall into two categories in my opinion: we get those awesome galloping nods to Ride the Lightning, of which the first disc is primarily composed, and doomier mid-tempo cuts that remind me of Sabbath, which make up the bulk of the second disc. Overall, this album reminded me of our days in band camp riding through town being young, invincible, and feeling alive. I have high hopes for the next album.

Amazing that this album comes out with some SERIOUS bangers and everyone ignored it because people are still up their own asses about Metallica. Load & Reload are amazing albums. Bluesy, smooth, weary and experienced. James really put a ton into the songwriting, it wasn't just heavy metal with metal themes and people shat themselves about it. I'll never understand it. You say they are terrible albums but Load & Reload were full of important songs to the band and it just kinda shows the snobbery in metal when bands go for more personal stuff. Honestly I rarely make a negative comment due to an opinion i disagree with, but i truely do love those two albums and, despite some fat needing to be trimmed and not being an arena banger album like AJFA, there's nothing terrible about them. I'll look the meanest metalist mother in the eye and tell them they're wrong on Load & Reload. They earned that from me with those albums. (I liked the video as a small counter to my slightly negative comment. I respect you like what you like, i don't think you're a snob, but you're just wrong on those albums.)
@FandangoHoward
@FandangoHoward 3 жыл бұрын
Load and ReLoad suffer from the fact that Metallica aged and matured in their musical tastes while their fan base didn't. Their hardcore fans wanted more MoP, AJFA, shit like that. Load and ReLoad are so far removed from that sound that fans immediately reacted with vitriol and anger. It's a shame, because like you said, James really poured his heart and soul into the lyrics and songwriting.

I would say it's their best since The Black Album. It's tough to compare H2SD to the 80s releases since stylistically Hardwired is more diverse. They borrow from everything. If you love the variety then definitely goes in the top 5. If you lean heavily into the thrash stuff then its going to sit somewhere between TBA and the Loads. For me it's a back and forth between this and TBA as being #5. If Kirk's solos were stronger on H2SD no question it'd have a higher position. It's what holds the album back from great to being a classic.

The transition that does it for me is the one right before 'Long live machine'. The chunking into that awesome key change is just incredible. I have said this before on other videos about this song that I will put this up against any thrash from MoP. 30 years after that album and they are still putting this kind of thrash out? That alone makes this song one of their greatest. Love your heart felt reaction. 'Hardwired to Self Destruct' is definitely another thrash song. 'Atlas Rise' is great but if it was just a little bit faster it would have been an epic thrash one too.

Metallica revisiting thier original album styles is seamless. It's not surprising how they pull it off. They are great at adapting other bands songs when they cover them. They are basically covering their old sound at their point in their career, but in a way that's still fresh, because they always adapt it to fit what feels best for them.

I spent a lot of time listening to people bash Metallica when the Black Album came out and dominate the comments being unreasonable. It got to me. But seeing you, an even older fan react as you are validates what I sensed back then - the so called metal heads bashing it were doing so more out of them embracing the commecial side of things, than an actual musical decline.

You should do a reaction to two videos: 1. "Chi" (the making of Spit out the Bone). You'll get some good insights into what they were doing here. Rob's bass solo is actually James' riff that he made up. They thought not only should Rob introduce that entire midsection, but the fuzz you're hearing is less of a tribute to Cliff (though it is a heavy nod to him), but more of a nod to Geezer Butler There's an old Sabbath or Ozzy song that has that distorted fuzz that is used in this riff. Also, when you listen to the first riff, Lars mentioned that this sounds more like the distant cousin to the riff they used in Metal Militia. But good catch on the references. 2. The Making of "Carl". If you want a tribute to Cliff, you should watch how they made Carl, the guitar. I'll warn you, keep some tissue nearby. The story of that guitar is amazing and the best tribute to Cliff I have ever seen, especially since it is like he is there with them every time they play on stage. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppWcfZmwjLmUgrM You will not be disappointed with these, especially Carl.

Reload is hit and miss, they have some great songs on it and some they could have left off but you can't hate Load, that album was fantastic. Ideally they could have cut a few songs and released both as one album though. But moving past those if you really hate them, Death Magnetic was a return to form and the last album was decent too. 19:10 When I showed this song to my friends, I remember one of them screaming “That’s 3 guitars!” So it’s very likely that both of them are playing at once.

Been a Metallica fan since I was 14 (about 32-33 years now). I've never turned my back on them because, as a guitar player of sorts, I understand the need to evolve, experiment and try things. What "fans" seem to forget is that real musicians create music for their own carthartic needs and not those of the "fan". I even like St Anger (Lulu was a stretch too far though). I think this is easily the best album since Justice, for sure.. maybe even Master. Not every song is incredible but as an overall piece it's a really good album. I thought Death Magnetic was a step in the right direction for the band and this was a leap back to it. Have to remember it's very hard to stay angry, aggressive and edgy when you have matured and are rich beyond your wildest ever dreams but I think they have captured some of the angst and demons within themselves for this album. Pretty sure they released every song as a video via youtube so you don't need to buy the album to check it out and see if you want to part with your $$$...

If a guitar solo has wah sound in it it's definitely Kirk's.

Your reaction sums up my journey up to see them in Manchester in 2019. Hadn't heard this album, didn't listen to any songs after Black album save a few tracks from Load/reload, listened to Kill 'em All the whole journey up... Was expecting to be disappointed, but best night of my life and can't stop listening to this album it makes me so happy to hear some 'proper' Metallica. \m/

As a huge old-school Metallica fan, I felt the same way(as many did) about the Load albums. I think much of it was a feeling of betrayal. However, as a pure music lover, if I listen to those albums(most of the songs, anyway) objectively, ignoring the name of the band, they're actually really good. They're just not the "Metallica" we grew-up w/. Personally, I thought St. Anger sucked more than the Load albums

I haven't heard anything off St Anger, so I can't make the comparison. Honestly, I don't think I want to hear anything off that album, a lot of commenters have made the same claims as you so I think I'll skip that album and go straight to the last 2 albums.

This song is so oldschool that James and Rob trade off vocals on it live, like he used to with Jason. The whole album doesn't sound like this. BUT, the best way I can describe this album is the missing link between AJFA and The Black Album. You are also correct, the solos are Rob, James, then Kirk together, in order.

The album has a lot of at least touches of the old Metallica. They do sneak in a few best of Reload style songs in there, but I think it truly provides cohesiveness to their discography.

9.4!!!!!! Holy shit dude. Your people should know that it is one of the best scores you ever shared. You reaaaly liked this song and I'm really happy with that. Yeah unfortunately not whole album is like this. I loved the album overall, but Spit Out The Bone, Halo on Fire are the only songs that summons old Metallica soul. But I believe Am I Savage and Hardwired to Self Destruct deserves something around 7-8 for you. Hardwired song really took their 1 week to fully compose and come up with lyrics, and I always think "it was natural to them". It's actually sad that a band's natural gift just too good, but they just ignore it

Anyone who cant say they like load or reload or even st anger isnt a Metallica fan, your a thrash fan, cuz they lyrics and riffs are more complex and is still hard and kept them on the radio all these decades just cuz its not thier old school thrash doesnt mean it is trash, these guys are great writer, musically and lyrically and they are gonna do what they want weather we like it or not, MetallicA doesnt make bad albumns just less popular, to me its all good and they are going on in thier 50s, THERE IS A REASON THEY BEEN GOING FOR 40 YEARS NOW, these days they have no problems selling out stadiums and arena, and travel the WORLD

Your 9.4 rating is actually higher than I expected, but hearing your commentary and my own experience of listening to all of their albums............... I get it. And yeah, I heard the little bass part as well, but when I first heard it, I did not even think about Cliff, but when you played it back, it seemed a little more focused and I could really appreciate it. And yeah, the song could definitely could have been longer; the ending seemed a bit abrupt.

** Notice - personal opinions to follow** This song is a gem amongst the rest of the album. There were one or two others that were on the radio, and then to me, a lot of the album felt like filler. The songs aren't bad though, they just aren't what you probably expect from Metallica. It's like Load, and to a lesser extent, Reload. As musical statements on their own, they are full of decently good songs. But for those who expect to hear "Metallica" (or, rather, what they think Metallica need to sound like), they just dont cut it. The first time I heard this song it brought some tears to my eyes. If you haven't listened to much after Justice, there are some other gems amongst Metallica's newer stuff - Moth Into Flame and the title track from this album; The Day That Never Comes off of Death Magnetic. Also - you want to hear (a rendition of) a very new Metallica song with Kill 'Em All James Hetfield? Check this out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4CxlY2dbpqJn5o It's pretty incredible. Better yet - you should react to the above. Really like to see your candid reaction when you hear it.
