New "A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica" Outtakes. I thought about combining the footage with the old 'Making Of' but I've had problems before with videos getting blocked due to copyright claims from that DVD, so here it is on its own to not risk it. @@stevenwilliams2617 I'll have to check that one out! He would always give 110% live - he's not Cliff but he brought something just as good IMO, just different. I've heard James say that he felt Jason was too much of a fan of the band, and the hazing was to try to beat that out of him.

@@laquentineta6241 no the album definitely suffers from the bass being quite literally lowered the point that it is "barely audible" and then some. jason's parts being put back in on fanmixes like "and justice for jason" are vastly superior to the original mix because of how poor of a decision it was to turn down his bass parts.

I wouldn’t talk about them nailing every note they spent 1 year and 1 million dollars recording the album of course everything was played perfectly. A major label would never release an album that wasn’t played perfectly. Lars drum tracks were all cut up they songs were him playing one take all the way through they took 40 different takes and chopped them all together. I’m not saying Metallica can’t write great songs because they can but Bob Rock is the reason why this album came out the way it did. I mean just watch this every other minute he’s telling them to change something that they would have otherwise kept it but that’s what a great producer does they guide the artist/musician/band.

The most striking moment, to me, is when Kirk wanders in looking like he just woke up from a nap. I always liked the fact that Metallica documented the making of their works from very early on. In the 90s there were always these singles with demos and raw edits of some songs available, and with all the documentaries available from this time period it becomes clear that they really see themselves as artists that want to achieve something and relate to people who also understand this and are interested also in the process and not only in the result. For me as a fan of the band this felt as a natural and welcoming attitude towards their fanbase and it also "helped" me to understand the existence of some albums like "St.Anger" or even the "Load" albums. With these videos they kept making I was able to understand the process of making music (= art).

St anger kinda ruined all of that but to be fair in bob rocks defense there probably wasn't anything worth pushing them in the first place anyway on that album so kinda not his fault especially when you consider all the other stuff going on as well. People blame him for the albums sound but idk Lars has a history of being pretty controlling over his drum sound and I kinda doubt Bob rock actually thought the drums sounded good on that album. The guitars are pretty thin yeah but idk they kinda are on all their new records and when they play live even as well.

When Lars said “I believe I do better than anybody else”, they just laughed their asses off lol. They were like “suuurreee, whatever you say”

Definitely awesome seeing one of the greatest albums of all time come together, still one of my absolute favourites and massive respect for Bob Rock for pushing the guys as much as he did to make this album absolutely GOATed

It's great to see some footage of Don't Tread on Me. I've always really liked that song, and I think they left it out of the Year and a Half... documentary

At around 19:50 James says one of the bass tracks is very mid-range heavy. Actually, the whole album mix has way more midrange than any of their previous albums. That’s a good thing.
