Matthew Lynch Its just Metallica trying to keep their throne. Like Saint Anger, they went from the original Metallica to the Metallica trying to keep up with the times. Not saying they lost their Metallica charm, but it’s not 1987 metallic Edit: This isn’t throwing shade at Metallica, I’ve loved every album since Kill Em’ All, but you can see the trend following

I was ten when this album came out in 1997. It was the very first album I bought with my older brother. He got me into heavy metal. Two weeks ago, he took his own life. He was only 38. If you're reading this and struggling with mental health, please know you are not alone. People do love you, and admire and respect you. You WILL be missed so very much. Seek help and remain strong.

This album they cut their hair, started getting airplay on mainstream top 40 stations, so some fans accused them of selling out. They didn't. They're a good act, people heard that, bought their stuff, and they grew. It's strange how humans will turn on their beloveds, sometimes, once others realize how special they are.

The balls to do things like orchestral on No Leaf Clover, and to end this song with that haunting sung melody, all the while feeling the pressure to deliver classics while the world was calling them sellouts. Say what you want but Metallica was true metal to the core, more defining of the philosophy than most people dare to admit. It would have been far simpler to keep writing fast songs and be called gods by the masses. Instead they kept following their instinct wherever it took them. Today you see a bold mother* do something daring against all odds and you call it "metal". We have Metallica to thank for that.

The second a person starts throwing around the word "sellout," they've already lost the argument, self-entitled prick that they are. What parts I don't like of Metallica are personal preference. Hell, there's stuff from Led Zeppelin I really don't like. Nobody calls them sellouts.

I fucking love this band. They're always trying new things to incorporate into their landmark sound. Working with Marianne Faithful or Lady Gaga or the SFSO or Mikey Cyrus or Lou Reed. Okay, maybe every now and then something is a bit of a stumble, but for the most part it works. I'm sure there were critics in 1996 saying adding a female vocalist - and an "old" one at that - was a mistake, but who's saying that now? This song still hits hard in 2022. Metallica forever!
