Yeah, they have some great ones. However, consider this: the "ballads/no ballads" thing may be an old Bay Area inside joke between them and Exodus (who once boasted they will be old men with like 38 albums out, but still no ballads).

I went to see Maiden in St. Paul the other night. I had been listening to the Hu for a while, but my crowd I went with never did. By the end of the show they were hooked, and were streaming the next day. So they were hooked on the new to them music after such a great live performance.

If you look at Metallica's first demos from 1981 to 1984 you'll see how Paul Di'anno influenced Metallica. Paul's Maiden and Motorhead and also Diamon Head were the fundament of Metallica. Also Metallica made a cover of Remember Tomorrow . RIP the original Iron Maiden

- Do I like ballads in metal? Man... it is the same answer as in any genre: it ALWAYS depends on how good (or not!) the song is. - As for Randy Rhoads, he is one of the rare guitar heroes that nobody dares to change his guitar solos. And that 's for a reason!

I am currently listening to Queen I by Queen and a couple of audiobooks. I mention Queen I because I am obviously a fan of the band and I love the first 7 albums. I also enjoy the 2024 mixes of all of the songs and the goodies which had come with it, similarly to Rocka Rolla and its updated remix and remaster. I mention it also because there is more to the album than just the 10 songs, as the new deluxe version has 5 demos they had recorded at another studio, before signing a record deal and one of the songs reminds me of Black Sabbath and how, when the solo comes around, the bass and drums just plod along and eventually, we go back to finishing off the song. The track Jesus in demo form and live have this addition. Either way, I like the album in all of its forms including the 1973 original and 2011 remaster. What sucks about this is that Paul Di’Anno was also a Queen fan and he wasn't able to hang on long enough to hear the 2024 remix of Queen I. Of course, Brian May has also played with Bruce Bruce Dickinson too, but I wonder if Bruce is the only singer of Maiden who has played with one or more members of Queen over the years. The other two things I am refering to are a couple of audiobooks with one by Alex Van Halen called Brothers. The other is by Elliot Mintz, who was a friend of John Lennon and is a friend of Yoko. I mention this only because if we didn't have The Beatles we probably wouldn't of even had Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and all of the early metal bands which came as the genre was developing. I also discovered how song ideas can be documented, thanks to this man hosting a radio show called The Lost Lennon Tapes and hearing home demos of John Lennon inspired me to write songs when I was in my teens and try, to get into music. I know that John Lennon is by no means metal, but he was taken from us way too soon in 1980, while I was 7. Sorry for the long reply, but I couldn't be brief. After all, I do maintain a blog or more and one on Queen, done respectfully.

I bet it's awesome and I can't wait. I love Testament and Floor. (Not so keen on new Nightwish, but it's not Floor's fault. She just sings what Thoumas writes. But she is capable of singing serious metal). And Testament as a band just keep better and better. All their last albums have been masterpieces.

So I love Dream Theater, but you can't really call it a reunion without Kevin on keys. I'm glad Portnoy is back, but I still miss him on keys (although I know there was a lot more to it than just his playing). Sad to hear that Ozzy won't be able to perform anymore. I've been expecting it for a while, ecstatic he FINALLY got his place in the HOF though! And I definitely agree, he didn't have the greatest voice, but he did have a very distinctive voice that made his music what it was. No one else could've done "Mr Crowley" nearly as well as he did!!

Ballads, if done right, can be absolutely amazing! Think "Beyond The Realms of Death," "Fade to Black," "One," and "Trust." As far as thrash metal is concerned, I have a love-hate relationship with thrash. I love classic Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Exodus, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, and even some Overkill. But a lot of other thrash metal bands are just blast furnace noise to me.

Ballads on metal albums - any metal, any band/album - is a nice change from "the norm". A metal band that releases album after album with nary a ballad to be found, is no different from all these Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift pop tarts doing song after song about heartbreaks and their poor taste in men, or Celine Dion doing song after song about love, love, love, some more love, and love - it is MONOTONOUS. Ballads on metal albums offer a respite and shows the bands' range and divers--- wait, let's NOT use _that_ word (we're all sick of hearing it)... but you know.

Is great that Wolfgang Van Halen is doing something from Randy Rhodes, as there was a rivalry from Eddie Van Halen toward Randy, which I believe was misunderstood as Randy only wanted to learn and share his knowledge. So sad they never got to play together on stage because of the misunderstanding, now that would have been a show and half.

@@vorpalblades Eddie believed there was a rivalry when there was none, because he didn't understand Randy Rhodes. Just a different mindset, so unfortunate, would have been awesome to see them both on stage together.

Instead of being nice to Wolfgang, try being honest! He butchered up Crazy Train from start to finish! He missed notes during the verse! His change up during the solo was slow to the point he reminded me of a novice playing! Jack Black is an a$$ kisser! Try going back & listen to how he praised RJD as the greatest! Then inducting Ozzy he refers to Ozzy the same exact way he did RJD! So no, Jack Black doesn’t deserve respect! As for the performance for Ozzy’s induction, Ozzy could have sand the extremely short set sitting down & his band could have played instead of a makeshift band!

I like ballads from metal bands if they are actually metal. Helloween has good metal ballads. Many ballads made by metal bands are just soft rock songs made so band can get on radio or MTV. Obviously, there are exceptions - Nothing Else Matters is a great ballad by a metal band. Wasting Love by Maiden is good. But especially ones from power metal bands tend to be very "meh". Not anyway heavier that anything by Aerosmith or Guns and Roses or Scorpions but of lower quality.
