Ironically Elton John's first British number one was Don't Go Breaking My Heart with Kiki Dee which was about his 5th on this list and he didn't have a solo UK number one until Sacrifice in 1989.

Elton was the biggest artist in America during the 1970s .during a period when it was tough for UK groups ,solo acts to break into our market . Queen , E.L.O. and Paul McCartney &Wings were the only others to be successful. Fleetwood Mac were half Brit,half American so I don't count them

I bought my first record, Aged 6 in London in 1960 and have thousands of records up to 1990 and this really opened my eyes. Some songs and Artists that I have never heard of and some minor hits in The UK that were Number 1's in The USA and some of our major Artist's minor hits were massive Stateside and no doubt that would have worked in reversed.#Hermans Hermits 2 novelty records at Number 1.Andy Gibb with 3 Number 1's.Lulu ? Bay City Rollers? The New Vaudeville Band? Who Knew?😀

There was a time back in the '70s, or 80's - when if you went around to any body's pad, he would have an electric guitar and an amp in his flat.

I think Penny Lane is the first song I remember from the Beatles when I was young. So many influences and I'm glad to say I recognise almost all of those no1s!

Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and John Lennon were the members of The Beatles, so where you see them pop up in this list as solo artists, you have actually heard of them, you just didn’t realise that was them.

@OnlyGoodMusic_13 күн бұрын
Which is quite irrelevant, the most listened to song from 1997 on Spotify is British, the one from 2000 too, the one from 2004 too, the one from 2007 too, the one from 2008 too, the one from 1995 too, the one from 1993 too, and so I can go on all day... Music is global, the Billboard Hot 100 is only for one country.

Ive just got to say the beatles are just about the most overrated band in existence, and just don't stack up to bands that came after
@thesilentalien671314 күн бұрын
what bands are you comparing them to?
@e_la_cumbia_della_noia12 күн бұрын
There wouldn't be any bands that came later in 70s, 80s and even 90s if it wasn't for the Beatles, lol. So no, they're not overrated.
@WIDGI12 күн бұрын
You realise that you just chose to declare that publicly for all of history to laugh at?! Not expressing that opinion was an option.
@gbulmer12 күн бұрын
@tomstorey8559 Two issues. _First,_ these are number 1 songs. They reached that position because more US record buyers paid their $s to buy Beatles records than other artists those weeks. Rated by money not free votes. _Second,_ it would be remarkable if every band following on from the Beatles were *WORSE.* Those newer bands were already "standing on the shoulders of giants." We _might_ be surprised *how few* were significantly *better.* The rarity of better bands is a more realistic measure of how exceptional the Beatles were. @WIDGI summed up your comment eloquently. 😂 Merry Christmas, and Happy, Peaceful New Year, Everyone. :🎅🎉 ☮

@@e_la_cumbia_della_noia just because your the first to make a car doesn't mean shit, same with the Beatles just because they were the first doesn't make them better than the majority of what came after
