Hey,thank you so much for your video. Its the best one. Its brief and to the point. I watched other videos on this topic and I was so dissatisfied. Thanks again! Keep on doing what you are doing.

You said Hydrogen is metal but it is the only non metal in that side is that right?
@LHSAtkins8 жыл бұрын
Hydrogen doesn't fit neatly into either classification, as it can either gain or lose an electron to form an ion. My understanding, from what I've been told, is that if hydrogen were to be frozen to a solid it would exhibit characteristics consistent with metals. (conduct, shiny, etc...) Remember this is a separate question from whether it is a gas or not. Physical state at STP is a different classification than metal/nonmetal characteristics, which are mostly defined by behavior with respect to holding onto electrons.

LHSAtkins Wat's the "LHS" in your profile name stand for?
@LHSAtkins8 жыл бұрын
Hydrogen is tricky to classify as metal/nonmetal. I call it a metal because it most commonly forms a cation rather than an anion. It forms covalent bonds most of the time, which makes it seem a little non-metally. I am given to understand that, if you got it cold enough to become a liquid, it would conduct like a metal, so I think metal is a better classification.

what's the difference between ductile and tensile strength?
@dhirendrakumar48177 жыл бұрын
Elements, especially metals have tendency to get converted into thin wires through beating or through using machines, by a property called ductile. Those metals are not brittle.

While you will see hydrogen classified as a nonmetal in many places, it is probably not very useful to stick it squarely in a category. www.scientificamerican.com/article/is-hydrogen-a-metal-1860-12-15/
