Agree. I dont know if I am in minority here, but I always appreciated more Kai Hansen talent. Best Helloween heritage after his departure were Gamma Ray albums. Not discovered, I was already familiar but I took a deep dive into their discography and found out compared to them Helloween is a bunch of kids having fun in kindergarten. well, helloween is helloween but Gamma take themselves much more seriously, their music is far less cheesy and far more epic. and lyricwise they are the most red-pilled band on the planet. I went up and spent every dime I had on Walls of Jericho, the live in Scotland, and Keepers 1&2. I got some of my fellow Metal Heads into them as nobody in my neighborhood heard of them(Queens NY). Till this day, I know parts 1&2 word for word.
@johnchedsey13062 жыл бұрын
Great video as always! I first found Walls of Jericho on cassette back in 1988 as a 15 year old and was instantly blown the F away by it. Markus Grosskopf should get a special mention for being one of the best bass players in all metal. Fluid, melodic and always adding some spice to their songs. He's great. Anyhow, I quickly tracked down Keeper Part 2 a month or two later and obviously also blown away. I would say that all Helloween in the 1980s is mandatory. They also have a rare accomplishment: a live release that is awesome. I Want Out Live (aka Live in the UK) captures this lineup at the best with lots of funny stage banter as well. They disappeared off my radar after the 80s because many European metal bands lost their stateside distribution. I didn't hear Pink Bubbles or Chameleon for several years after their release. Pink Bubble is just the sound of a band clueless about what they wanted to do. However, I am one of those defenders of Chameleon. Granted, it's not a Helloween by the numbers album, but there's great songs plus Kiske's singing is outstanding throughout. If you go into it knowing it's an oddity in their discography, it'll probably sound better. Although I somewhat enjoy Master of the Rings, I just never got into Andi Deris' trip. He's competent but it just didn't do much for me. Master, incidentally, came out with a great 9 song bonus disc with cover songs and other fun stuff that is worth tracking down. I liked the bonus disc better than the actual album. After Master, I honestly just tuned out of the Helloween thing. I heard albums but I just couldn't really connect with them. That said, I really am curious to hear the latest one with Kiske and Hansen back on board. What I saw in this video makes me wonder if a triple vocalist approach might be the secret sauce for the band. Hopefully they will tour for it and I'll finally get to check them out live!

Overall, Helloween really has a much more consistently good catalog of albums than many people realize. Sure, Keeper ! and 2 are legendary, but once Andi Deris took his place behind the microphone, it has been one solid release after another. Thanks very much for this great video!!! I.m.o., Michael Kiske completed a great band, but with Kai being it's mastermind. He dominated song writing and also guitar solos - This made Keeper I possible, which is a unique masterpiece. Keeper II followed with more trivial contributions by Weikath and all in all was far below Keeper I. With Kai Hansen leaving, there was no real band left. The fantastic vocals by Kiske lost the track and as he always wanted to change his direction (but before, held in line by Kai) - Helloween had no more to give. The Kiske/Weikath albums were not worth mentioning and so was every release thereafter. Also the Schwichtenberg-farewell (RIP) didn't help. You can still feel the spirit decades later, when Kiske and Hansen play live together with Helloween or Unisonic. It's like: an absolutely unique Metal-guitarrist like Kai Hansen had a his good season with an overwhealming vocalist. The rest is not worth mentioning. (this is how I experienced the Helloween time)....

Great video, I discovered Helloween in college right as Dragonforce's debut album of all things was making the rounds on our local shareware network, and I started searching for similar bands like Stratovarius and Nightwish, which eventually led me back to Helloween. Not too long after that I picked up their recently released "Treasure Chest" best of album here in the States, and ever since then they've been without question my favorite band! Aside from a couple of their most recent releases prior to their reunion with Kai and Kiske, they've been pretty consistent in album quality. It was such a blast going through their back catalog and the first time hearing the Keepers albums is something I'll never forget, but I gotta say the mid 90s - early 00s Deris era is criminally underrated. Aside from Keepers 1+2, the 4 albums they released with Deris before their 2nd major lineup change easily round out my Top 5 albums from the band (yes, even more than Walls of Jericho!).

Keepers 1 I've been learning about them since I've been a fan for only a year. Before April 2nd of 2021, I didn't know about them. I've heard the name but never sat down to listen until my boyfriend showed me Skyfall video. I fell in love with the sound, the concept and I've been collecting their albums since then. They became my favorite band of all time. And I personally believe that Markus Grosskopf should get more credit for being an amazing bass player and songwriter, also Sascha has so many feelings and emotions expressed by his lyrics also deserves credit. Kai pure genius, I admire him so much, Weikath another genius with How many tears (among others) All of them give Helloween a special and unique touch. Love them.

I actually stumbled onto helloween keeper 1&2 in the mid 90s back in high school, when we had bands like Testmant and Megadeth for metal and they absolutely blew my mind. I instantly fell in love with the lighter, neo-classical songs with tons of melody in the guitars and vocals. It pretty much was going against everything I heard out there at the time.

Great video. Not sure if I can say this but they are probably my favourite band just based on the Keeper albums. Like most bands from the Keeper era I can't seem to progress from their first 2 or 3 albums. Guess I'm just stuck in the 80's 🤘

Me too! I was initially gob-smacked by Kiske's firing, but I've got to admit that I was also thinking "WTF" when Chameleon came out, so perhaps no surprise. I really tried to continue with them, but I just couldn't take to Deris' voice. Nothing against the guy. He's probably a top geezer. I just don't like his singing. I then checked out what Kai had been up to with Gamma Ray. Why did I not do that sooner? If you haven't, do yourself a favour and do so. The first three albums with Ralf are good, but they seem to be trying to find their way. A shame, because he's an amazing singer. Land of the Free is a flawless masterpiece. If you like 80s Helloween, you'll love it. In fact, it's all great.

Unbelievable high quality content as always. Thank you for existing. That being said, I always thought that Kai felt unwanted, pretty sure I've read interviews about that many years ago, Kai was progressively "disrespected" and him leaving was unavoidable. Overall, you nuanced my appreciation of their later era (Deris needs praise in that context).

"I Want Out" was my introduction to Helloween (as in, seeing the video on Headbanger's Ball). I fell so hard in love with Michael Kiske's voice. I remember then buying the cd, and when "Eagle Fly Free" came and went, I was left an emotional mess... I thought I loved Bruce Dickenson's vocal range, but man, with Kiske and his (even more) vocal range, I was crying😭, his voice was so beautiful... I remember going to the Headbanger's Ball tour at the Civic Center in Atlanta, with Anthrax, Exodus, and Helloween. seeing Helloween Live, and Michael Kiske perform, I was never the same, was a night to remember. I never knew about "Pumpkins United", and seems like I need to give Deris a chance, as alot of that stuff you showcased here in this video, I really liked. I kind of wrote off Helloween when Kiske left, kind of like how I did in the same retrospect, with Maiden. when Bruce left, it was never the same. but, Deris is pretty damn good, looks like I got a few Helloween records to listen to now, since I obv. ignored 'em in the past. thanks so much for an EPIC video!!🔥🔥

Headbangers Ball! Man that takes me back! I remember seeing I Want Out, I loved it. I ordered Keepers II through Columbia House/BMG, I literally still remember where I was when I popped it into my walkman (take that kids!) and heard Eagle Fly Free, I was hooked. Deris is great, the video really did describe him perfectly as a cross between Hansen and Kiske. Better Than Raw may be my favorite Helloween CD, yep, even above Keepers II, Deris can more than hold his own.

My first ever concert was Anthrax, Exodus, & Helloween on the Headbanger’s Ball tour in 1989. It was their Keeper of the 7 Keys tour. I was mainly there for Anthrax but I loved Helloween at the time from their awesome I Want Out video & song, but the thrash fans mostly were not & Helloween got booed, which I thought was dumb. Still though, they put on a great show & did I Want Out which made me happy. I remember talking to Warrel Dane about a newer Helloween album & he asked if it’s happy music. I laughed & said, yeah, it kind of was. Surprising that both Running Wild & Helloween came from Hamburg. Having been to Hamburg on the Running Wild Victory tour, I caught a second concert from Running Wild (after Osnabruck opening night when I met them) in Hamburg & the fans there weren’t 1/100th as amped as Osnabruck. Maybe they’re used to them & it’s not a big deal. But there’s not much in Hamburg other than a huge knight statue, a sex museum, and the Reeperbahn where prostitutes line a nearby street; every 20’ was another one. You walk down the street, pick your prostitute (assuming you’re single. I was with an ex) , & go off to your hotel where a police station is nearby. All legal. It was an interesting trip!

While I had been listening to Powermetal for a little while, it's not until Helloween that I *really* started to listen to it. It just so happened to be my choice of metal subgenre before then. So awesome you do this. Helloween is one of my favorite metal bands. I enjoy learning the history of these Power Metal pioneers; it's nice you did this there doesn't seem to be much documentary of these guys as I like to know them as I'm a fan of Power Metal. Their 2 Keepers albums are great classics and their masterpieces. It's great to know that Michael Kiske and Kai Hansen are back. And also, RIP Ingo Schwichtenberg. Will you also do Gamma Ray? Also do other Heavy and Power Metal bands, whether they're popular and especially if they're less known.
