Awesome, I’ve had very similar insights when returning to tradition ( in my case Catholicism ) and there seems to be a convergence. The ideas about having a spiritual discipline, similar to learning a musical instrument, and how religion can be viewed as a language, deeply resonated with me.

So many rituals had some health and hygiene related intention and in these times " the law" and the not existing secularism were implemented to make people do it. we dont have to take it as the "Word of God." Still useful in that context. Like in the magic cultures taboos were mostly structuring ecological necessities ( fishing taboos in certain periods of the year ) and other issues in these cultures.

Sounds like the High Priest Dempsey has all the bits and pieces to create the Next Great Religion (non-religious of course) based solely upon egocentric smart'ish guy rationalizations. Nothing quite like having a couple non-religious geeks geek out on Religions that they have never and will never actually practice. LOL

Fair concerns, though I do want to clarify that I very much /do/ practice Islam and have for years. I fast Ramadan, pray salat according to the Maliki madhhab, do communal dhikr with various Sufi communities, pray communally in masājid, look to the Qur'an and the hadith for spiritual guidance, take legal and religious learning from ulama… Of course, I do these things imperfectly, but as do many born-Muslims. But my deep care and fidelity to the religion is very much from the inside, as a Muslim.

Islam=Jesus+commandments. Prophet Muhammad =Moses and Jesus in one. ان الله يحكم ما يريد God is omnipotent to command whatever He chooses to.
